2‐Cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate mediated reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of acrylonitrile targeting a polymer with a higher molecular weight

The reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) mediated by 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate was first applied to synthesize polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with a high molecular weight up to 32,800 and a polydispersity index as low as 1.29. The key to success was ascribed to the optimization of the experimental conditions to increase the fragmentation reaction efficiency of the intermediate radical. In accordance with the atom transfer radical polymerization of AN, ethylene carbonate was also a better solvent candidate for providing higher controlled/living RAFT polymerization behaviors than dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide. The various experimental parameters, including the temperature, the molar ratio of dithiobenzoate to the initiator, the molar ratio of the monomer to dithiobenzoate, the monomer concentration, and the addition of the comonomer, were varied to improve the control of the molecular weight and polydispersity index. The molecular weights of PANs were validated by gel permeation chromatography along with a universal calibration procedure and intrinsic viscosity measurements. ¹H NMR analysis confirmed the high chain‐end functionality of the resultant polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In situ observation of NaBi(WO4)2 dendrite growth and the study on microstructure of solidification

The dendrite growth process of transparent NaBi(WO₄)₂ with small prandtl and high melting point was studied by using the in-situ observation system. According to the dynamic images and detailed information, there are two kinds of restriction effect on the dendrite growth, the competition between arms and branches and the convection in the melt. The dendrite growth rate was time dependent, and the rate of arm growth reached the maximum 5.8 mm/s in the diffusive-advective region and rapidly decreased in the diffusive-convective region. The growth rate of branch had the same change trends as the arm’s. Based on the EPMA-EDS data of solidification structure of quenched NaBi(WO₄)₂ melt, it was found that there were component differences from stoichiometric concentration in the melt near the interface during the growth process. Simplified analytic solutions and a novel fast algorithm for Yb-doped double-clad fiber lasers

In this paper, continuous wave Yb³⁺-doped double-clad fiber lasers (DCFLs) with linear-cavity are investigated theoretically and numerically using the rate equations. Under the steady state conditions, the simplified analytic solutions of Yb³⁺-doped DCFLs under considering the scattering loss are deduced in the strongly pump condition. Compared with the known analytic solutions in published literatures, our analytic solutions are more accurate, especially, at higher reflectivity of output mirror. In addition, a fast and stable algorithm based on the Newton-Raphson method is proposed to simulate numerically Yb³⁺-doped DCFLs. The results by simplified analytic solutions are in good agreement with those by the numerical simulation. Moreover, we have performed the optimization of an Yb³⁺-doped DCFL using the simplified analytic solutions and the numerical simulations, respectively.     

LARGE-SIGNAL SIMULATIONS OF A GYROTRON TRAVELING-WAVE AMPLIFIER WITH A MODE-SELECTIVE INTERACTION CIRCUIT

A self-consistent nonlinear theory is used to analyze the saturated performances of a Ka-band gyrotron traveling wave amplifier (gyro-TWA) operating at the fundamental with a mode-selective interaction circuit involving a tapered vane-slot mode converter. The amplifier is predicted to generate 140 kW saturated output power with 33.3% efficiency, a saturated gain of 33dB, and a 3dB bandwidth of 2.7 GHz (8%) for a 70 kV, 6A electron beam with a velocity ratio of 1.0 and an axial velocity spread of 5%.     

Homoclinic and Periodic Orbits Arising Near the Heteroclinic Cycle Connecting Saddle-focus and Saddle Under Reversible Condition

In this paper, we study the dynamical behavior for a 4-dimensional reversible system near its heteroclinic loop connecting a saddle-focus and a saddle. The existence of infinitely many reversible 1-homoclinic orbits to the saddle and 2-homoclinic orbits to the saddle-focus is shown. And it is also proved that, corresponding to each 1-homoclinic （resp. 2-homoclinic） orbit F, there is a spiral segment such that the associated orbits starting from the segment are all reversible 1-periodic （resp. 2-periodic） and accumulate onto F. Moreover, each 2-homoclinic orbit may be also accumulated by a sequence of reversible 4-homoclinic orbits.     

THE PROBLEM OF LIMIT CYCLES FOR A LIENARD TYPE CUBIC SYSTEM

The purpose of this paper is to study a general Lienard type cubic system with one antisaddle and two saddles. We give some results of the existence and uniqueness of limit cycles as well as the evolution of limit cycles around the antisaddle for system (2) in the following when parameter a1 changes.     

Studies on the method of total synthesis of koumine: I. 4-Substituted 1,2-dihydropyridine derivatives and their function as a conjugated diene in Diels-Alder reaction

A route to the total synthesis of koumine has been suggested. Five 4-substituted 1, 2-d hydropyridine derivatives, which are supposed to be a conjugated diene of Diels-Alder reaction to produce the isoquinuclidine ring of koumine, have been synthesized. Only two of them were found to be able to undergo the Diels-Alder reaction. The stereochemistry of the reaction product has also been examined.
