Using Saganc loop of optical-injected semiconductor laser scheme for stable and continuous CW wavelength-tuning

We propose and experimentally investigate a stable and continuous wavelength-tuning laser structure by using self-injected Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) with Saganc loop scheme. In this proposed laser scheme, the lasing wavelength can be tuned in the range of 1526.20 to 1549.75 nm with tuning-step of 1.30 nm in single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) output. Here, the maximum and minimum output powers are −7.4 and −17.0 dBm, and their corresponding side-mode suppression ratios are 52.0 and 52.8 dB/0.05 nm, respectively. Moreover, to achieve the continuous wavelength tuning, we can also adjust the temperature of FP-LD for wavelength shifting.     

Response of bilateral breasts to the endogenous hormonal fluctuation in a menstrual cycle evaluated using 3D MRI

The normal breast tissue responds to the fluctuation of endogenous hormones during a menstrual cycle (MC) and shows changes in breast density. The changes between left and right breasts of the same women were compared to evaluate the symmetrical response. Twenty-four healthy women were recruited in this study. Four weekly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies were performed during one MC. A computer algorithm was used to segment the breast and the fibroglandular tissue to measure the fibroglandular tissue volume (FV) and three morphological parameters: circularity, convexity and irregularity. The coefficient of variation (CV) for each parameter measured among four MRI studies was calculated; also, the maximal percent change between two MRI studies that show the highest and the lowest FV was calculated. These parameters measured from left and right breasts were compared using Pearson correlation.     

High longitudinal selectivity of shifting multiplexing in volume holograms

High longitudinal selectivity of the shifting multiplexing with spherical reference wave is proposed and demonstrated. A simplified method based on wave optics is used for calculating the selectivity, and the result fits well the experimental measurement. Under the paraxial condition, a simple formula for the longitudinal selectivity is introduced. With use of an object lens with effective NA=0.817, we obtain that an FWHM of selectivity is as small as 1 μm.     

DRDF analysis of wide-angle x-ray scattering of natural rubber

A differential radial distribution function (DRDF) of molten natural rubber (NR) was derived from its wide-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) data. Three peaks with Bragg spacings 4.85, 2.31, and 1.23 Å corresponding, respectively, to interchain, C₁-C₃ and C₁ -C₂ distances are present in the corrected WAXS curve. The derived DRDF, which is shown to be greatly improved than the ones published so far, contains six peaks located at 1.51, 2.48, 3.98, 5.68, 10.65, and 15.25 Å. Maximum contributions of intramolecular atomic distances to the radial distribution peaks were estimated and compared with the experimental results. The comparison shows that the first three peaks are intramolecular in origin and the remaining peaks are predominantly due to intermolecular regularities. A periodicity of an approximately constant interval of 5.26 Å is found between the intermolecular peaks and is attributable to the organizations of more or less parallel chain segments in the material. This finding provided additional evidence for the presence of local lateral ordering to the extent of about 30 Å in molten-state natural rubber.     

Utilization of four WDM channels with signal remodulation of OFDM-QAM for 10 Gb/s uplink passive optical networks

In this investigation, we experimentally investigate an extended reach (ER) time-division-multiplexed passive optical network (TDM-PON) using four wavelength-multiplexed channels to achieve 16 Gb/s downlink and 10 Gb/s uplink traffic. Each downlink signal uses the highly spectral efficient 4 Gb/s OFDM-QAM, and each uplink signal is generated by signal remodulating the downlink signal via a reflective semiconductor amplifier (RSOA) at 2.5 Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ). In addition, the performance of the proposed ER TDM-PON has also been analyzed and discussed.     

Central neurocytoma: typical magnetic resonance spectroscopy findings and atypical ventricular dissemination

PURPOSE: Central neurocytomas (CNCs) are rare neuronal tumors that have a favorable prognosis and lower rate of recurrence compared with other intraventricular neoplasms. Although it may be difficult to distinguish CNC on conventional neuroimaging, typical MR spectroscopy (MRS) features have been reported. We describe the MRI and MRS features of CNC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight patients with CNC were reviewed. Three patients underwent presurgical in vivo single-voxel MRS at short echo time (TE, 35 ms) and multi-voxel MR spectroscopic imaging at long TE (144 ms). The surgically resected tumor specimen of one of these patients was also studied ex vivo using high-resolution magic angle spinning (HRMAS) nuclear magnetic resonance. RESULTS: All eight tumors were located in the lateral ventricles. In six patients, CNC extended into the third ventricle, and in two patients the tumor showed further contiguous intraventricular dissemination into the fourth ventricle. In all three patients who underwent MRS, a characteristic metabolite peak was detected at 3.55 parts per million (ppm) at both long and short TE. HRMAS confirmed the presence of elevated glycine (Gly) at 3.55 ppm, without increase in the concentration of myo-inositol found at the same chemical shift. Elevated choline (at 3.2 ppm) was also seen in all three patients. CONCLUSION: On MRS, CNCs have a typical appearance with a metabolite peak at 3.55 ppm due to increased Gly, and this feature may be helpful in presurgical diagnosis. Although they are rare benign intraventricular tumors, in atypical cases, CNCs can show extensive intraventricular dissemination into the fourth ventricle.     

应用双面电极的PLZT横向电光调制器电场的精确解

使用保角变换方法导出了横向电光调制器中双面电极结构的电场和电容的解析表达式，给出了用于ＰＬＺＴ电光陶瓷介质中二次电光效应分析的电场分布的物理图像。通过计算对比表明，双面电极结构电极边级区域由于过剩双折射引起的强度调制非均匀性较单面电极有所改善。     

Employing dual-saturable-absorber-based filter for stable and tunable erbium-doped fiber ring laser in single-frequency

In this demonstration, a stable and wavelength-tunable erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser using dual-saturable-absorber-based (DSAB) filter inside loop cavity is proposed and experimentally investigated. The proposed DSAB filter not only can filter the side-mode in single-frequency output, but also can obtain the flattened output power spectrum within 1 dB variation in the effectively range of 1529 to 1563 nm. In addition, the output stabilities of wavelength and power are also measured experimentally and discussed.     

Structural and mechanical properties of multi-element (TiVCrZrHf)N coatings by reactive magnetron sputtering

In this study, (TiVCrZrHf)N multi-component coatings with quinary metallic elements were deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering system. The composition, structure, and mechanical properties of the coatings deposited at different N₂ flow rates were investigated. The (TiVCrZrHf)N coatings deposited at N₂ flow rates of 0, 1, and 2 SCCM showed an amorphous structure, whereas those deposited at N₂ flow rates of 4 and 6 SCCM showed a simple face-centered cubic solid solution structure. A saturated nitride coating was obtained for N₂ flow of 4 SCCM and higher. By increasing N₂ flow to 4 SCCM, the hardness and modulus reached a maximum value of 23.8 ± 0.8 and 267.3 ± 4.0 GPa, respectively.
