Heterogenized rhodium complexes as hydrogen transfer catalysts

Cationic rhodium(I) norbornadiene complexes with polystyrene-immobilized imidazole, tetramethylbiimidazole or phosphine ligands in the presence of potassium hydroxide catalyze hydrogen transfer from isopropanol to acetophenone and 1-hexene. [Rh(NBD) (poly-PPh₂)₂] ClO₄ complexes are particularly efficient for the reduction of acetophenone, but slow decomposition to rhodium metal is observed.

Effect of stirring on the Belousov-Zhabotinskii reaction: A problem of interpretation

It is probable that different phenomena attributed to mechanical stirring during the Belousov-Zhabotinskii (BZ) reaction are caused by atmospheric oxygen and, as far as our experiments show, they have nothing to do with dissipative structures or with the turbulence of the reacting mixture.

Optimization of the abnormal Beckmann rearrangement: application to steroid 17-oximes

A novel and practical procedure was developed for the abnormal Beckmann rearrangement of steroid 17-oximes. Treatment of the 17-oximes with TFA/CH(OMe)(3) in boiling THF for 2 h gives the corresponding 13,17-seco alkene nitrile products in unprecedented high yields (70-92%). Since the alkene nitriles can be subsequently converted into 18-norsteroids, this general method provides a highly efficient route to these biologically important compounds and, by extension, to other structurally related natural products.     

Tutorial: Capillary Electrophoresis

In recent years a number of exciting developments have emerged in the area of scientific computational tools for classroom use. Computer Algebra Systems (CASs), for example, Maple, are at the forefront of this arena. Such tools have been long sought by teachers of physical chemistry, inherently a mathematics intensive subject. With a CAS at hand, students can look forward to taking college science courses, like physical chemistry, without the usual mathematics anxiety. These tools can be used to do numerical and symbolic mathematics including calculus and linear algebra. In addition, they have wonderful graphics capabilities that include three-dimensional plots, contour plots, and animations. This paper describes the implementation of Maple in two junior-level physical chemistry courses. The materials used for beginning workshops are presented here and additional examples of Maples graphic and algebraic capabilities are described.     

Terpenoids of the oleoresin of Pinus pumila

Summary 1. The composition of the acid fraction of the oleresin ofPinus pumila (Pall.) Regel. has been studied, and from it has been isolated, in addition to known compounds, the methyl ester of a new labdane acetoxy acid.2. In the hydrocarbon fraction of the oleoresin 11 monoterpenes and 26 sesquiterpenes have been found (and 17 of the latter have been identified).3. The composition of the fraction of neutral oxygen-containing diterpenoids fromP. pumila differs considerably in its diterpenoid components from the corresponding fractions of the oleoresins of botanically related species-P. sibirica andP. koraiensis. Chemoselective reduction of aldehydes with zinc borohydride in tetrahydrofuran

A variety of structurally different aldehydes undergo chemoselectire reduction over ketones with zinc borohydride in tetrahydrofuran at −10°C to the corresponding alcohols.     

Neutron activation analysis of gold and iridium in steel

A method of determination of trace gold and iridium in steel is presented. The samples were preconcentrated with an anion exchanger. The chemical recoveries were determined by an isotope tracer technique using¹⁹⁸Au and¹⁹²Ir.     

Measurement of the rate constant of hydrogen atoms with carbon monoxide in tubular and jet stirred open reactors

The reaction of hydrogen atoms with carbon monoxide has been studied in discharge flow systems with a new method of detection of atoms. The results obtained with tubular and jet stirred open reactors agree with those of other authors working in transient conditions and with more sophisticated techniques.

Alkaloids of a new type fromSophora alopecuroides L.

Summary The structures of aloperine and allylaloperine (fromSophora alopecuroides L.) — alkaloids of a new structural type for the genusSophora — have been established by chemical and spectral methods. A number of parameters, NMR spectra, and mass spectra characterizing this class of compounds has been obtained. The partial synthesis of allylaloperine has been performed.All-Union Scientific-Research Institute of Medicinal Plants.
