We report on the formation and sustainment of liquid columns with aspect ratios much larger than the value at the onset of the Rayleigh-Plateau instability. This is achieved by using the passive feedback of the radiation pressure applied on the column surface by an acoustic beam injected at the upper end of the column and guided along it. We develop an analytical model that describes the coupling between the acoustic wave guiding and the balance between acoustic and capillary surface forces exerted on the column surface and find a satisfactory agreement with the experiment.  相似文献

An analytical iterative procedure has been established to determine the amplitude of a laser beam propagating through an active medium. The treatment is valid for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening, and for arbitrary inhomogeneities of the parameters characterizing the active medium, namely, the refractive index, the small-signal gain and the saturation intensity. After a supplementary approximation, a thin-sheet gain approach is derived from the first iteration. The formalism enables us to provide analytical criteria for evaluating both the accuracy of each iteration and the propagation distances for which the thin-sheet solution can be used. We report on spatiotemporal behavior of self-adapted dielectric liquid columns generated and sustained by light radiation pressure. We show that single- or multivalued liquid column diameter depends on the excitation light beam. When the beam diameter is sufficiently small, we observe a well-defined stationary column diameter. In contrast, at a larger beam diameter, the liquid column experiences complex spatiotemporal dynamics whose statistical analysis evidences an underlying multistable structure. Experimental observations are all supported by a full electromagnetic model that accounts for the wave guiding properties of the liquid column viewed as a step-index liquid-core liquid-cladding optical fiber having an optically tunable core diameter.  相似文献

Recent experimental developments showed that the use of the radiation pressure, induced by a continuous laser wave, to control fluid-fluid interface deformations at the microscale, represents a very promising alternative to electric or magnetic actuation. In this article, we solve numerically the dynamics and steady state of the fluid interface under the effects of buoyancy, capillarity, optical radiation pressure and viscous stress. A precise quantitative validation is shown by comparison with experimental data. New results due to the nonlinear dependence of the optical pressure on the angle of incidence are presented, showing different morphologies of the deformed interface going from needle-like to finger-like shapes, depending on the refractive index contrast. In the transient regime, we show that the viscosity ratio influences the time taken for the deformation to reach steady state.  相似文献

A simple analytical model is proposed to describe the transversal spatial structure of a tridimensional rotationally symmetric pulsed beam. The spatial behaviour of the pulse amplitude is shown to be linked to its (measurable) second- and higher-order intensity moments, namely, beam width, quality parameter and kurtosis. As an illustrative experimental example, this model has been applied to high-quality TEA CO2 laser pulses. We report an experimental study of the scattering of sound by sound in the vicinity of the liquid-vapor critical point of carbon dioxide. We measure the amplitude of the scattered difference frequency wave generated by acoustic bulk nonlinearities. We observe that it is strongly increased in the vicinity of the critical point.  相似文献

We report an experimental study of the backscattering of a sound wave of frequency f by a surface vibrating harmonically at frequency F (F < f) and amplitude A in the regime where the Doppler effect overcomes bulk nonlinear effects. When the duration to of the analyzed time series of the scattered wave is small compared to the vibration period, the power spectrum of the backscattered wave is proportional to the probability density function of the scatterer velocity, which presents two peaks shifted from f by roughly 2fAomega/c (omega = 2piF). On the contrary, when t0 > F(-1), sidebands at frequencies f +/- nF (n integer) appear in the power spectrum, which are due to the phase modulation of the backscattered wave induced by its reflection on a moving boundary. We use the backscattered power spectrum to validate the phase modulation theory of the Doppler effect in the latter case for 2kA < 1 and 2kA approximately > 1 (k = 2pif/c, where c is the wave velocity) and we test the validity of an acoustic nonintrusive estimator of A as a function of power spectrum bandwidth and of A itself.  相似文献

Under the Riemann hypothesisone can prove (1) with exponent .The proof of the theorem startswith the Heath-Brown–Linnik identity which leads to aformula giving the number of primes in an interval in termsof coefficients of certain Dirichlet series. I then estimatethe coefficients by using, among other things, the informationwhich can be gained from Montgomery's mean value theorem andHuxley's version of the Hal' asz lemma. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved numerically for the case of a Gaussian wave packet incident on a time-varying potential barrier. The time evolving reflection and transmission probabilities of the wave packet are computed for several different time-dependent boundary conditions obtained by reducing or increasing the height of the potential barrier. We show that in the case when the barrier height is reduced to zero, a time interval is found during which the reflection probability is larger (superarrivals) compared to the unperturbed case. We further show that the transmission probability exhibits superarrivals when the barrier is raised from zero to a finite value of its height. Superarrivals could be understood by ascribing the features of a real physical field to the Schrödinger wave function which acts as a carrier through which a disturbance, resulting from the boundary condition being perturbed, prpagates from the barrier to the detectors measuring reflected and transmitted probabilities. The speed of propagation of this effect depends upon the rate of reducing or raising the barrier height, thus suggesting an application for secure information transfer using superarrivals.  相似文献
