Summary High resolution gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry were employed to determine the components in samples of solvent refined coal (SRC) II naphtha, middle distillate, heavy distillate, and fuel oil blend and SRC-I light oil, wash solvent, and process solvent in concentrations higher than approximately 0.5%. Quantitation was based on the addition of n-alkane internal standards and peak area response of a flame ionization detector with the use of fused silica and glass capillary columns coated with SE-52 and SF-96. The major differences in the SRC-I and II materials were the molecular weight ranges and sizes of the chemical components found in the products, an effect of the differences in the nominal boiling ranges of the materials. Alkanes, alkenes, hydroxylated aromatics, hydrogenated and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon ring systems, and alkylated derivatives of the above were found in greatest concentration in the unfractionated materials. Sulfur and nitrogen heteroatomic species were in greates concentration in the higher nominal boiling range materials. A major purpose of these investigations was to develop a method to obtain data on the composition of these complex sample matrices for use in designing studies for toxicological evaluation of these materials. 相似文献

We report the first observation of a giant magnetoresistance (MR) in Co/Cu superlattices grown by MBE. The maximum value of the MR is - 26% and this is found in a specimen for which the copper layers are about 7 Å thick and which includes a thin 10 Å layer of gold in the buffer region between the substrate and the superlattice. From RHEED and X-ray diffraction it is shown that the metallic layers in the specimens grown in this way are extremely flat and that the orientation of the copper is (111). 相似文献

This paper describes the first general large-signal dynamic multiple-mode laser model that incorporates all the main mechanisms known to influence the dynamic behaviour of DFB laser structures with the exception of thermal effects: longitudinal mode spatial hole burning, carrier transport effects, nonlinear gain, and laser and submount parasitics. The time evolution of the output power and wavelength of all modes is predicted, and full spectra can be plotted as a function of time. The model has been extended to include an approximation to the effects of propagation down dispersive fibre, thereby allowing the simulation of filtered received eye diagrams. Detailed comparison of the model with the experimental performance of 2×/8 DFB lasers has shown good agreement, allowing the performance to be optimized, particularly with respect to longitudinal hole burning and carrier transport. The model is also applied to gain-switched operation of 2×/8 DFB structures, fast pulsing of three-section /4 DFB lasers, and the dynamic behaviour of complex coupling coefficient DFB laser structures. 相似文献

Each team in the English County Cricket Championship plays against some other teams twice a year, and others only once. This paper describes a case study whose aim was to overcome this inherent unfairness by producing a four-year schedule of opponents which was as fair as possible, and could be easily seen to be fair, while still allowing for traditional rivalries. The schedule also needed to be satisfactory in regard to several other constraints and objectives. Various simple heuristics were used; these are described in some detail. Of particular interest is the effectiveness of a ‘local non-worsening’ approach when the objective is to find any feasible solution. We present the results of experimental studies of specific features in the behavior of small-scale artificial field-aligned
irregularities (AFAIs) and the DM component in the spectra of stimulated electromagnetic emission (SEE). Analysis of experimental
data shows that AFAIs in the polar ionosphere are generated under different background geophysical conditions (season, local
time, the presence of sporadic layers in the E region, etc.). It is shown that AFAIs can be excited not only in the F region, but also in “thick” sporadic E
s layers of the polar ionosphere. The AFAIs were observed in some cycles of heating when the HF heater frequency exceeded the
critical frequency by 0.3–0.5 MHz. Propagation paths of diagnostic HF radio waves scattered by AFAIs were modelled for geophysical
conditions prevailing during the SPEAR heating experiments. Two components, namely, a narrow-banded one with a Doppler-spectrum
width of up to 2 Hz and a broadband one observed in a band of up to 20 Hz, were found in the sporadic E
s layer during the AFAI excitation. Analysis of the SEE spectra shows that the behavior of the DM component in time is irregular,
which is possibly due to strong variations in the critical frequency of the F
2 layer from 3.5 to 4.6 MHz. An interesting feature observed in the SPEAR heating experiments is that the generation of the
DM component was similar to the excitation of AFAIs when the heater frequency was up to 0.5 MHz higher than the critical frequency.

An untargeted metabolomics approach was used to investigate a cultured strain of Microcystis aeruginosa (UTEX LB2386) known to be a prolific producer of a diverse class of cyanopeptides. Identification of a putative new compound with a molecular weight of 996 led to the purification and structure elucidation of this new member of the micropeptin class of cyanopeptides. Masking sounds can be continuously present, gated simultaneously with the signal, or gated somewhat prior to the signal. This continuum of relative onset times was explored using waveforms of the sort commonly employed in studies of comodulation masking release (CMR). There was a 50-Hz masker band centered on the 1250-Hz tonal signal, and four 50-Hz flanker bands centered at 850, 1050, 1450, and 1650 Hz. In some conditions, all four flanker bands had the same temporal envelope, and the masker band either had that same envelope (correlated presentations) or a different envelope (uncorrelated presentations). In other conditions, all five bands had different temporal envelopes (all-uncorrelated presentations). The masker band and/or the four flanker bands were either gated nearly simultaneously with the signal (burst conditions) or were gated prior to the signal by a duration that was systematically varied (fringed conditions). The eight listeners could be partitioned into three groups on the basis of their response to these fringing manipulations. Two listeners (the large fringers) showed a gradual improvement in detectability with increasing fringe duration (called a temporal decline of masking), while three others (the small fringers) showed little improvement in detectability. For the remaining three subjects, there was evidence of a "learning" effect that changed them from large fringers to small fringers over a 10-week period of listening. When present, the temporal decline of masking was greater for the correlated than for the uncorrelated comodulation condition; as a consequence, the difference in detectability between them (the comodulation masking release or CMR) increased with fringe duration. By fringing the masker and flanker bands separately and in combination, it was revealed that the temporal declines of masking were primarily attributable to the fringing of the flanker bands. In contrast, large CMRs required long fringes on both the masker and flanker bands. The above results were obtained with 50-ms signals, but generally similar data were obtained with a signal duration of 240 ms. The difficulties raised for experimentalists and theorists by such long-term practice effects are discussed. 相似文献

It is known that compliance scheme does not provide simple linear isotopic sum rules in λ?1 similar to the ones in λ in the force constant scheme. The advantage of not having such sum rules in the compliance scheme is discussed in relation to the uniqueness problem of the molecular force field.Incidentally, for the molecules H2O, D2O, and HDO, two quadratic relations in terms of the inverse frequency parameters λ?1 are obtained.
