Causal loop diagrams as a de-escalation technique

Escalation of commitment, the tendency of decision makers to keep on investing in losing courses of action, has been shown to be a costly decision bias that affects many areas of decision making. Even though escalation is a widely studied phenomenon, there has been comparatively little research on how to avoid this bias. The present study focuses on de-escalation of commitment and proposes that causal loop diagrams (CLDs) can help to decrease escalating commitment to a failing course of action. By means of an experiment, this study shows that using a CLD decreases escalation tendencies.     

Vocal tract resonances and the sound of the Australian didjeridu (yidaki) I. experiment

The didjeridu, or yidaki, is a simple tube about 1.5 m long, played with the lips, as in a tuba, but mostly producing just a tonal, rhythmic drone sound. The acoustic impedance spectra of performers' vocal tracts were measured while they played and compared with the radiated sound spectra. When the tongue is close to the hard palate, the vocal tract impedance has several maxima in the range 1-3 kHz. These maxima, if sufficiently large, produce minima in the spectral envelope of the sound because the corresponding frequency components of acoustic current in the flow entering the instrument are small. In the ranges between the impedance maxima, the lower impedance of the tract allows relatively large acoustic current components that correspond to strong formants in the radiated sound. Broad, weak formants can also be observed when groups of even or odd harmonics coincide with bore resonances. Schlieren photographs of the jet entering the instrument and high speed video images of the player's lips show that the lips are closed for about half of each cycle, thus generating high levels of upper harmonics of the lip frequency. Examples of the spectra of "circular breathing" and combined playing and vocalization are shown.     

Self-assembled monolayers of alkanethiolates on palladium are good etch resists

This paper describes microcontact printing (muCP) of long-chain alkanethiolates on palladium, followed by solution-phase etching with an iron(III)-based etchant, to make patterned structures. The commonly used soft-lithographic procedure for fabricating microstructures-muCP of SAMs on gold-has three shortcomings: a significant surface density of pinhole defects, substantial edge roughness, and incompatibility with processes used in CMOS fabrication. Microcontact printing on palladium gives fewer defects and smaller edge roughness than on gold, and is compatible with CMOS. The mechanism by which etch-resistant patterns are formed is different for palladium and gold. The Pd/S interfacial layer formed by the reaction of palladium films with sulfur-containing compounds provides good resistance to etches independently of the barrier to access the surface provided by the film of (CH2)n groups in the long-chain SAMs. This barrier is the basis of the etch resistance of SAMs on gold, but only supplements the etch resistance of the sulfur-containing interfacial layer on palladium. Characterization of the SAM formed from hexadecanethiol on palladium is described.

Tritium labelling on the acetoxyl methyl group has been used to probe the mode of incorporation of acetate into cinnamyl acetate in the solvolyes of cinnamyl chloride and cinnamylmercuric acetate, and in the allylic oxidation of allylbenzene with mercuric acetate.
