The di-iron subsite of all-iron hydrogenase: mechanism of cyanation of a synthetic [2Fe3S]-carbonyl assembly

This paper describes the kinetics and intimate mechanisms associated with cyanation of [2Fe3S] assemblies to give species structurally related to the subsite of all-iron hydrogenase. Stopped-flow FTIR spectroscopy has enabled the quantitation of the dynamics of five well-defined steps that experimentally illustrate the role of bridging carbonyls in the assembly of the dicyanide species, how on-off sulfur ligation can have a dramatic effect on cyanation kinetics and how the [2Fe3S] core stabilises bridging carbonyl species.

Iron(I) in biology?: one-electron oxidation of an (Fe(I)-Fe(I)) carbonyl cyanide precursor bearing a proximal thioether group leads to an (Fe(I)-Fe(II)) bridging carbonyl transient with spectral features similar to the di-iron sub-site of the CO inhibited paramagnetic centre of all-iron hydrogenase.     

Perceptual cues to the voiced-voiceless distinction of final fricatives for listeners with impaired or with normal hearing

Cues to the voicing distinction for final /f,s,v,z/ were assessed for 24 impaired- and 11 normal-hearing listeners. In base-line tests the listeners identified the consonants in recorded /d circumflex C/ syllables. To assess the importance of various cues, tests were conducted of the syllables altered by deletion and/or temporal adjustment of segments containing acoustic patterns related to the voicing distinction for the fricatives. The results showed that decreasing the duration of /circumflex/ preceding /v/ or /z/, and lengthening the /circumflex/ preceding /f/ or /s/, considerably reduced the correctness of voicing perception for the hearing-impaired group, while showing no effect for the normal-hearing group. For the normals, voicing perception deteriorated for /f/ and /s/ when the frications were deleted from the syllables, and for /v/ and /z/ when the vowel offsets were removed from the syllables with duration-adjusted vowels and deleted frications. We conclude that some hearing-impaired listeners rely to a greater extent on vowel duration as a voicing cue than do normal-hearing listeners.     

Scanning electron microscopy of foreleg tarsal sense organs of the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (DeGeer) (Acari:Dermanyssidae)

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies on the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (DeGeer), showed that the tip of the foreleg tarsus of both sexes and early instar stages (larvae, protonymph and deutonymph) bears a cluster of 10 blunt peg-type sensillae. Diversity in size, shape and surface features of the wall of these sensillae characterize the sensilla complex (sensory field). Two short setae (1 and 2) with smooth walls lack detectable pores, whereas three medium-sized setae (4, 5 and 8) bear pores in the wall. Four medium or long setae (3, 6, 7 and 9) have longitudinal grooves or ribs in the wall, whilst one seta (10) possesses both pores and grooves in the wall. Based on the morphology, it is suggested that the porous setae could be olfactory receptors, and the grooved setae could be mechanoreceptors.     

Nuclear inelastic scattering spectroscopy of iron-sulfur cubane compounds

The potential of NIS spectroscopy to study the iron-sulfur clusters in metalloproteins is illustrated using model compounds. The origin of the intense low energy transfer bands is discussed.
