Remarks on dynamical systems with weak forces

We study the existence of T-periodic solutions for the forced system of differential equations –ÿ=V(y)+h(t), where h is T-periodic and V is defined in an open, bounded and convex subset of R^N and V– as y tends to the boundary of the set. Performance and simulation of an on-board guided-wave optical processor for airborne SAR applications

This paper describes the performance and simulation of a compact integrated optical processor for the real-time reconstruction of two-dimensional images in airborne stripmap synthetic aperture radar applications. The functional behavior of the processor is explained in some detail. The design criteria are briefly given. The simulation step allowed the main processor characteristics and properties to be identified. A number of comparisons were obtained in airborne SAR mission scenarios between the predictions of the optical device and those achieved by the modern electronic digital approach, based on the wavefront reconstruction method by matched filtering.     

From X- to O-shaped spatiotemporal spectra of light filaments in water

We show that the angle-wavelength spectra of light filaments excited by ultrashort pulses experience a transition from X- to O-like structures when their carrier wavelengths are switched from normal to anomalous dispersion. Calculations confirm that the O-shaped conical emission follows the elliptic geometry of the nonlinear Schr?dinger equation with anomalous dispersion.     

Metastable phase in the quantum Hall ferromagnet

Time-dependent capacitance measurements reveal an unstable phase of electrons in gallium arsenide quantum well that occurs when two Landau levels with opposite-spin are brought close to degeneracy by applying a gate voltage. This phase emerges below a critical temperature and displays a peculiar non-equilibrium dynamical evolution. The relaxation dynamics is found to follow a stretched-exponential behaviour and correlates with hysteresis loops observed by sweeping the magnetic field. These experiments indicate that metastable randomly distributed magnetic domains with peculiar excitations are involved in the relaxation process in a way that is equivalently tunable by a change in gate voltage or temperature.     

Physical limits to communication

The limits posed by physics to the quantity of information that can be transmitted with a certain amount of power are investigated. The same ultimate limits are found for transmission of information encoded using matter and massless fields.     

Full control by locally induced relaxation

We demonstrate a scheme for controlling a large quantum system by acting on a small subsystem only. The local control is mediated to the larger system by some fixed coupling Hamiltonian. The scheme allows us to transfer arbitrary and unknown quantum states from a memory to the large system ("upload access") as well as the inverse ("download access"). We study the sufficient conditions of the coupling Hamiltonian and give lower bounds on the fidelities for downloading and uploading.

Properties of quantum Markovian master equations

In this paper we give an essentially self-contained account of some general structural properties of the dynamics of quantum open Markovian systems. We review some recent results regarding the problem of the classification of quantum Markovian master equations and the limiting conditions under which the dynamical evolution of a quantum open system obeys an exact semigroup law (weak coupling limit and singular coupling limit). We discuss a general form of quantum detailed balance and its relation to thermal relaxation and to microreversibility.
