Synthesis and characterization of novel monocarbollide exo-closo-(pi-arene)biruthenacarboranes [(PPh3)mClRu(eta6-C6H5R)Ru'CB10H11-n(OMe)n] (where R = H, m = 2, n = 1; R = mu-PPh2, m = 1, n = 0, 1)

The monocarbon carborane [Cs][nido-7-CB(10)H(13)] reacts with the 16-electron [RuCl(2)(PPh(3))(3)] in a solution of benzene/methanol in the presence of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylnaphthalene-1,8-diamine as the base to give a series of 12-vertex monocarbon arene-biruthenacarborane complexes of two types: [closo-2-[7,11-exo-RuClPPh(3)(mu,eta(6)-C(6)H(5)PPh(2))]-7,11-(mu-H)(2)-2,1-RuCB(10)H(8)R] (5, R = H; 6, R = 6-MeO; 7, R = 3-MeO) and [closo-2-(eta(6)-C(6)H(6))-10,11,12-[exo-RuCl(PPh(3))(2)]-10,11,12-(mu-H)(3)-2,1-RuCB(10)H(7)R(1)] (8a, R(1) = 6-MeO; 8b, R(1) = 3-MeO, inseparable mixture of isomers) along with trace amounts of 10-vertex mononuclear hypercloso/isocloso-type complexes [2,2-(PPh(3))(2)-2-H-3,9-(MeO)(2)-2,1-RuCB(8)H(7)] (9) and [2,5-(Ph(3)P)-2-Cl-2-H-3,9-(MeO)(2)-2,1-RuCB(8)H(6)] (10). Binuclear ruthenacarborane clusters of both series were characterized by a combination of analytical and multinuclear NMR spectroscopic data and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of three selected complexes, 6-8. In solution, isomers 8a,b have been shown to undergo the isomerization process through the scrambling of the exo-[RuCl(PPh(3))(2)] fragment about two adjacent triangular cage boron faces B(7)B(11)B(12) and B(8)B(9)B(12).     

Control of protein adsorption: molecular level structural and spatial variables

The adsorption of fibrinogen (Fb) and bovine serum albumin onto polycrystalline Au coated with HS(CH2)3O(CH2CH2O)5CH3 was determined by surface plasmon resonance from bare Au (0% coverage) to the complete ( approximately 100% coverage) self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Both proteins exhibit similar adsorption curves with common onset ( approximately 60% coverage) and range ( approximately 60% to 80% coverage) of minimal protein adsorption. Reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopic data show that widespread order is not present in the films over this range of coverage, indicating loosely packed, bound oligomers that are uniformly distributed and fully screen the underlying substrate. On the basis of our data, we propose a mechanism of protein rejection by oligo(ethylene oxide) (OEO)-modified surfaces in terms of changes in free energy (DeltaGsystem; system = protein + surface) due to oligomer conformational constriction over an area greater than the contact area. Minimal protein adsorption corresponds to the maximum DeltaGsystem for a given compression. This controlled study of protein adsorption provides insights into the molecular level understanding of protein adsorption unavailable from previous polymer and comparative SAM studies.     

1-Azaspiro[3.3]heptane as a Bioisostere of Piperidine**

1-Azaspiro[3.3]heptanes were synthesized, characterized, and validated biologically as bioisosteres of piperidine. The key synthesis step was thermal [2+2] cycloaddition between endocyclic alkenes and the Graf isocyanate, ClO₂S−NCO, to give spirocyclic β-lactams. Reduction of the β-lactam ring with alane produced 1-azaspiro[3.3]heptanes. Incorporation of this core into the anesthetic drug bupivacaine instead of the piperidine fragment resulted in a new patent-free analogue with high activity.     

Anion-anion assembly in crystal of sodium nitroprusside

The experimental charge density in the crystal of disodium pentacyanonitrosoferrate (sodium nitroprusside) dihydrate was analyzed in detail by means of Bader's atoms in molecules theory. It was shown that nitroprusside anion is involved in relatively strong self-interactions through the nitroso group. The obtained results agree well with the spectroscopic data, indicating the tendency of the corresponding moiety to the formation of anion-anion association both in solutions and in the crystalline phase.     

Palladium - catalyzed dimerization of propene

Summary The insertion of the previously coordinated second molecule of propene into the Pd-C bond is the rate-determining step in the dimerization of propene with the Pd(acac)₂ + BF₃OEt₂ catalyst system. Tetracoordinated square planar Pd hydrides bearing two vacant coordination sites are likely to be catalytically active species in the dimerization of propene. The simplicity of the catalyst system composition might be of industrial importance.     

Monodisperse superparamagnetic nanoparticles by thermolysis of Fe(III) oleate and mandelate complexes

Monodisperse superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles of controlled size were synthesized by thermal decomposition of organic iron compounds in different high-boiling solvents in the presence of oleic acid and/or oleylamine. The compounds included Fe(III) oleate and mandelate, formed from FeCl₃ and the respective acids. The size of the nanoparticles was easily tuned to 8–27 nm by varying the experimental conditions. The nanoparticles were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and magnetization measurements. The hydrophobic coating of the particles was analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). To make the particles biocompatible and water dispersible, nontoxic hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives were synthesized and used for phase transfer of hydrophobic particles into water using a ligand-exchange procedure.
