Tricyclic heteroaromatic ring systems II A convenient synthesis of 1H-pyrrolo[3,2-c]quinolines

Various quinol-4-yl hydrazones on heating in high boiling solvents undergo cyclizations to give lH-pyrrolo[3,2-c]quinolines in good yields. Some of these pyrroloquinolines were alkylated to provide their N-alkyl derivatives.     

Synthesis of tetracyclic hydroxyquinones by cycloaddition reactions with dienols.

Cycloaddition of naphthazarin and derivatives to dienols, generated thermnally from benzocyclobuenol or by irradiation of 2-methylbenzaldehyde or 2-methylacetophenone, leads to tetracyclic systems related to those present in anthracycline and tetracycline antibiotics.

An adaptive discretization of shallow‐water equations based on discontinuous Galerkin methods

In this paper, we present a discontinuous Galerkin formulation of the shallow‐water equations. An orthogonal basis is used for the spatial discretization and an explicit Runge–Kutta scheme is used for time discretization. Some results of second‐order anisotropic adaptive calculations are presented for dam breaking problems. The adaptive procedure uses an error indicator that concentrates the computational effort near discontinuities like hydraulic jumps. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Complex quantum enveloping algebras as twisted tensor products

We introduce a *-structure on the quantum double and its dual in order to make contact with various approaches to the enveloping algebras of complex quantum groups. Furthermore, we introduce a canonical basis in the quantum double, its universalR-matrices and give its relation to subgroups in the dual Hopf algebra.     

Structure of CdS/SiO2 Nanocomposites: Influence of the Precursor and Cd Concentration

The influence of using TMOS or TEOS in the formation of CdS quantum dots in a silica matrix have been studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The amount of Cd-S bonds have been monitored as a function of the nominal Cd concentration. The relative amount of CdS crystals depends on the precursor. The use of TEOS is not recommended because it gives a poor yield, especially for high Cd concentration. A discussion of the influence of CdS concentration in matrices from TMOS is carried out from structural models created from their pore volume distribution. The mean pore size becomes smaller and the size distribution more uniform when CdS concentration increases but the nanocrystals of low CdS nominal content present a more efficient quantum confinement.     

Negative conductance and sequential tunneling in amorphous silicon-silicon carbide double barrier devices

Negative conductance has been observed in the electronic transport perpendicular to hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide/amorphous silicon double-barrier structures at low temperatures. Some devices present negative resistance even at room temperature. These results are consistent with a sequential tunneling phenomenon.
