The anomalous spectral dependence of polarization in comets

We have found an anomalous (negative) spectral dependence of polarization for split comet 73P/Schwassmann–Wachmann 3, i.e. polarization degree in the I filter is systematically less (4%) than that in the R filter for both B and C subnuclei of the comet. Earlier we revealed a similar effect for comets 21P/Giacobini–Zinner, C/1999 S4 (LINEAR), and 9P/Tempel 1. Together with comet C/1989 X1 (Austin), for which the similar spectral dependence of polarization was also observed, these comets form a group characterized by some peculiar properties of their dust. Since atypical organic composition is a characteristic feature for all these comets, the anomalous spectral dependence of polarization may indicate specifics of origin of these comets. Really, most of these comets (but not all) originated from the Kuiper Belt. Also, most (but not all) of these comets belong to the group of comets depleted in carbon species in the gas phase, which is typical for comets formed in the giant-planet area of the solar system. On the other hand, all of the comets with negative spectral gradient of polarization have the dust dominated by large particles and most of them belong to the Jupiter family. This may indicate that anomalous spectral dependence of their polarization is a result of their evolution. To identify the reason of anomalous polarization, systematic spectropolarimetric observations of Jupiter-family comets are necessary.

Mathematical theory of optimization has found many applications in the area of medicine over the last few decades. Several data analysis and decision making problems in medicine can be formulated using optimization and data mining techniques. The significance of the mathematical models is greatly realized in the recent years owing to the growing technological capabilities and the large amounts of data available. In this paper, we attempt to give a brief overview of some of the most interesting applications of mathematical programming and data mining in medicine. In the overview, we include applications like radiation therapy treatment, microarray data analysis, and computational neuroscience.     

Photorefractive properties of a nanocomposite based on a ferroelectric polymer

The photorefractive effect is demonstrated for the first time for the composite consisting of a ferroelectric material (polyvinylidenefluoride-trifluoroethylene) and single-walled carbon nanotubes that serve as nonlinear optical chromophores and, simultaneously, spectral sensitizers for the laser radiation with a wavelength of 1064 nm. It is demonstrated that the internal field in the ferroelectric material makes it possible to measure the photorefractive effect in the absence of the external field.

Diastereo-controlled Diels–Alder cycloadditions of erythrose benzylidene-acetal 1,3-butadienes by 4-substituted-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione: Evidence for the stereoelectronic effects on the dienes

Erythrose benzylidene-acetal 1,3-butadienes are studied as partners in Diels–Alder cycloadditions. A high diastereofacial improvement is found in cases where both the alcohol function is protected and a π–π interaction between the diene and dienophile is possible. Several competing factors have been studied independently in order to explain its influence on the selectivity of the cycloadditions.     

Synthesis of alpha-galactosyl ceramide,a potent immunostimulatory agent

Alpha-galactosyl ceramide has been identified to be a potent stimulatory agent for a novel immunological process, mediated by CD1 molecules. This paper describes a short and efficient synthesis of alpha-galactosyl ceramide. Starting from commercially available 2-deoxy galactose, a suitable sphingosine derivative was obtained in nine steps and 36% overall yield, which was subsequently glycosylated to give the target molecule. This flexible route will provide various glycolipids for further exploration of this interesting biological process.     

Enhanced drainage and coarsening in aqueous foams

Experiments are presented elucidating how the evolution of foam microstructure by gas diffusion from high to low pressure bubbles can significantly speed up the rate of gravitational drainage, and vice versa. This includes detailed data on the liquid-fraction dependence of the coarsening rate, and on the liquid-fraction and the bubble-size profiles across a sample. These results can be described by a "coarsening equation" for the increase of bubble growth rate for drier foams. Spatial variation of the average bubble size and liquid fraction can also affect the growth and drainage rates.
