Neutral strange particle production in antineutrino-neon charged current interactions

Neutral strange particle production in \(\bar v\) Ne charged current interactions is studied using the bubble chamber BEBC, exposed to the CERN SPS antineutrino wide band beam. From a sample of 1191 neutral strange particles, the inclusive production rates are determined to be (15.7±0.8)% forK ⁰ mesons, (8.2±0.5)% for Λ, (0.4±0.2)% for \(\bar \Lambda \) and (0.6±0.3)% for Σ⁰ hyperons. The inclusive production properties ofK ⁰ mesons and Λ hyperons are investigated. The Λ hyperons are found to be polarized in the production plane.     

Dilepton and trilepton production by antineutrinos and neutrinos in neon

A sample of over 25,000 fully measured neutrino and antineutrino charged current interactions in BEBC includes 192 dilepton candidates. The prompt signal after subtraction of background is 41 ±7µ⁺ e ^-, 35±7µ⁺µ^- events from \(\bar v\) interactions, and 32±7µ^-µ⁺ events from ν interactions. There are 2 trileptons, µ^-µ^- e ⁺ and µ^-µ^-µ⁺. Results are compared with other experimental data and with the standard model. Limits to prompt like sign µ⁺ e ⁺, µ⁺µ⁺ and µ^-µ^- signals are given and compared with other experiments and with theoretical calculations.     

Coherent production of π+ mesons in ν-neon interactions

The coherent production of π⁺ mesons by charged current neutrino interactions on neon nuclei in BEBC is compared to the predictions of the PCAC hypothesis and the meson dominance model. Good agreement is observed.     

Coherent production ofρ − mesons in charged current antineutrino-neon interactions in BEBC

Coherent production ofρ ^? mesons in charged current antineutrino interactions on neon nuclei is studied in the BEBC bubble chamber exposed to the CERN SPS wide band beam. The cross section is measured to be (95±25)·10^?40 cm² per neon nucleus, averaged over the beam energy spectrum. The distributions of kinematical variables and the absolute value of the cross section are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on the CVC hypothesis and the vector meson dominance model.     

Evidence for higher twist effects in fast π− production by antineutrinos in neon

Evidence for a significant higher twist contribution to highz π^? production in antineutrino scattering is presented. In events withW>3 GeV andQ ²>1 GeV² in our data, it accounts for (51 ±8)% of all π^? withz above 0.5. It is consistent with thez?Q ² correlations of Berger's higher twist prediction. The data are inconclusive concerning the predictedy?z correlation andp _T dependence. Thez ?Q ² correlation is not adequately described by the Lund Monte-Carlo.     

Production ofρ +, −, 0 (770),η(550), ω(783) andf 2(1270) mesons in\bar v neon and ν neon charged current interactions

The production of the meson resonances ?(770) (all three charge states), η(550), ω(783) andf ₂(1270) in \(\bar v\) Ne and ν Ne charged current interactions is investigated in a bubble chamber experiment with BEBC at CERN. Except for thef ₂, the main features of resonance production are reasonably well described by the Lund model, although the average resonance multiplicities are overestimated by the model by (67±30)%. The average multiplicities of all resonances, including thef ₂, are well reproduced by a semiempirical model, whose parameters were determined from hadron interaction data.     

A determination ofα s from the transverse momenta of hadrons produced in neutrino and antineutrino interactions

TheW andQ ² dependence of the transverse momentum of the forward-going hadrons in deep inelastic neutrino charged current interactions on neon is studied. The data were obtained by exposing BEBC filled with a Ne/H₂ mixture to the CERN SPS wide-band neutrino beam. The data on average transverse momentum are compared to a model which includes first order QCD, intrinsic quark momentum in the nucleon and Fermi motion, as well as a simple model for hadronization. The model is found to describe the data well. Values of _s =0.16±0.02(stat)±0.02(syst.)±0.03(frag.) at an averageQ ² of 15.4±0.4 GeV²/c² and (stat.) _–90 ⁺¹⁰⁰ (syst.) _–90 ⁺¹³⁰ , (frag.) MeV/v for three flavours are extracted.
