Surface sensitive X-ray reflectivity (XR), fluorescence (XF), and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) experiments were conducted to determine the accumulation of ferric iron Fe (III) or ferrous iron Fe (II) under dihexadecyl phosphate (DHDP) or arachidic acid (AA) Langmuir monolayers at liquid/vapor interfaces. Analysis of the X-ray reflectivity and fluorescence data of monolayers on the aqueous subphases containing FeCl(3) indicates remarkably high levels of surface-bound Fe (III) in number of Fe(3+) ions per molecule (DHDP or AA) that exceed the amount necessary to neutralize a hypothetically completely deprotonated monolayer (DHDP or AA). These results suggest that nano-scale iron (hydr) oxide complexes (oxides, hydroxides or oxyhydroxides) bind to the headgroups and effectively overcompensate the maximum possible charges at the interface. The lack of evidence of in-plane ordering in GIXD measurements and strong effects on the surface-pressure versus molecular area isotherms indicate that an amorphous network of iron (hydr) oxide complexes contiguous to the headgroups is formed. Similar experiments with FeCl(2) generally resulted with the oxidation of Fe (II)-Fe (III) which consequently leads to ferric Fe (III) complexes binding albeit with less iron at the interface. Controlling the oxidation of Fe (II) changes the nature and amount of binding significantly. The implications to biomineralization of iron (hydr) oxides are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Surface crystallization at the vapor-liquid interface of the ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) is observed in synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies. Sharp Bragg reflections emerge in grazing-angle x-ray diffraction patterns 37?°C above the bulk melting temperature, indicating the presence of a long-range ordered phase at the surface in coexistence with the bulk parent liquid. The unique structure of the vapor-liquid interface where butyl chains attached to the cations are expelled to the vapor side facilitates interionic electrostatic interactions that lead to the crystallization. Our results demonstrate the complexity of ionic-liquid structure with their tendency to spontaneously phase separate into nanodomains with finite correlation lengths in coexistence with the liquid phase. By virtue of interfacial boundary conditions, these nanodomains grow laterally to form quasi-two-dimensional crystals.  相似文献

Surface sensitive synchrotron X-ray scattering studies were performed to obtain the distribution of monovalent ions next to a highly charged interface. A lipid phosphate (dihexadecyl hydrogen-phosphate) was spread as a monolayer at the air-water interface to control surface charge density. Using anomalous reflectivity off and at the L3 Cs+ resonance, we provide spatial counterion (Cs+) distributions next to the negatively charged interfaces. Five decades in bulk concentrations are investigated, demonstrating that the interfacial distribution is strongly dependent on bulk concentration. We show that this is due to the strong binding constant of hydronium H3O+ to the phosphate group, leading to proton-transfer back to the phosphate group and to a reduced surface charge. The increase of Cs+ concentration modifies the contact value potential, thereby causing proton release. This process effectively modifies surface charge density and enables exploration of ion distributions as a function of effective surface charge-density. The experimentally obtained ion distributions are compared to distributions calculated by Poisson-Boltzmann theory accounting for the variation of surface charge density due to proton release and binding. We also discuss the accuracy of our experimental results in discriminating possible deviations from Poisson-Boltzmann theory.  相似文献

Synchrotron x-ray and surface-tension studies of a strong polyelectrolyte (PE) in the semidilute regime (approximately 0.1 M monomer charges) with varying surfactant concentrations show that minute surfactant concentrations induce the formation of a PE-surfactant complex at the gas-solution interface. X-ray reflectivity and grazing angle x-ray diffraction show the complex PE-surfactant resides at the interface and the alkyl chains of the surfactant form a two-dimensional liquidlike monolayer. With the addition of salt (NaCl), columnar crystals with distorted-hexagonal symmetry are formed.  相似文献

Surface sensitive X-ray scattering and spectroscopic studies have been conducted to determine structural properties of Mms6, the protein in Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 that is implicated as promoter of magnetite nanocrystals growth. Surface pressure versus molecular area isotherms indicate Mms6 forms stable monolayers at the aqueous/vapor interface that are strongly affected by ionic conditions of the subphase. Analysis of X-ray reflectivity from the monolayers shows that the protein conformation at the interface depends on surface pressure and on the presence of ions in the solutions, in particular of iron ions and its complexes. X-ray fluorescence at grazing angles of incidence from the same monolayers allows quantitative determination of surface bound ions to the protein showing that ferric iron binds to Mms6 at higher densities compared to other ions such as Fe(2+) or La(3+) under similar buffer conditions.  相似文献

Ionic specificity effects, i.e., ions of the same valence leading to different macroscopic effects, are studied by considering a Langmuir monolayer of arachidic acid over a solution containing either Fe(3+) or La(3+). We systematically vary pH levels as a way to control the interfacial surface charge and characterize the system by surface-sensitive x-ray scattering and spectroscopic techniques. We show that the critical surface pressure at the tilted (L2) to untilted (LS) transition is ionic specific and varies with pH. While the maximum density of surface bound La(3+) per head group of arachidic acid is ~0.3, the amount necessary to neutralize the surface charge, for Fe(3+) it is nearly 0.6 and it is accompanied with a significant accumulation of the coions Cl(-) as revealed by surface x-ray spectroscopy. We account for the experimental observations by a statistical mechanical model including ion specificity.  相似文献

Neutron and synchrotron X-ray studies of arachidic-acid monolayers compressed to the collapse region, beyond their densely packed molecular area, reveal that the resulting structures exhibit a surprising degree of reproducibility and of order. The structure of the collapsed monolayers differs for films that are spread on pure water or on CaCl2 solutions. On pure water, the collapsed monolayer forms a stable crystalline trilayer structure, with acyl-chain in-plane packing practically identical to the three-dimensional (3D) crystal structure of fatty acids. For monolayers spread on Ca2+ solutions, the collapsed film consists of a bi- and trilayer mixture with a ratio that changes by the collapse protocol. Our analysis suggests that the bilayer structure is inverted, i.e., with the hydrophobic tails in contact with the water surface and the calcium ions bridging the polar heads. The inverted bilayer structure possesses a well-ordered crystalline slab of calcium oxalate monohydrate intercalated between two acyl chains. We provide theoretical arguments rationalizing that the observed structures have lower free energies compared with other possible structures and contend that the collapsed structures may, under certain circumstances, form spontaneously.  相似文献

Anomalous x-ray reflectivity measurements provides detailed information on ion binding to biomembrane surfaces. Using a monochromatic beam tuned to various x-ray energies at the Argonne National Laboratory Advanced Photon Source and utilizing a newly commissioned x-ray liquid surfaces reflectometer, measurements at and away from ion absorption edges allow determination of the distribution of these ions as they accumulate near lipid membranes. As a model, the interaction of Ba2+ ions with DMPA- (1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidic acid) monolayers at the aqueous surface is studied. We find an unexpectedly large concentration of barium at the interface, approximately 1.5 per DMPA-, forming a Stern layer of bound ions and a cloud of less densely bound ions near the lipid headgroups. This result can be understood only if one assumes that bound cations are partially speciated, e.g., as BaOH+.  相似文献

For a small triangulated category we describe Neeman's K 1 in terms of generators and relations. This result extends to triangulated categories Sherman's and Nenashev's results on Quillen's K 1 for exact categories. The generators are double distinguished triangles, and the relations are the diagonal double distinguished triangles and the relations associated to the so-called coherent 3×3 double diagrams.  相似文献
