Rapid,non-destructive determination of butter adulteration by means of photopyroelectric (PPE) calorimetry

The study focuses on the application of the photopyroelectric (PPE) technique combined with gas chromatography to detect adulteration of cow milk-obtained butter. The thermal diffusivity and effusivity have been directly measured using back and front PPE detection, respectively, and the results have been correlated with the composition of adulterated butter samples. The back detection configuration has been used in the case of butter adulterated with palm oil, and a possible correlation of the thermal diffusivity with total amount of monounsaturated fatty acids composition has been proposed. For butter adulterated with soy milk, we used the front PPE configuration in order to measure the samples’ thermal effusivity. A strong dependence of the value of thermal effusivity as a function of soy milk content was found.     

On the Deformation of Functionally Graded Porous Elastic Cylinders

This paper is concerned with the linear theory of inhomogeneous and orthotropic elastic materials with voids. We study the problem of extension and bending of right cylinders when the constitutive coefficients are independent of the axial coordinate. First, the plane strain problem for inhomogeneous and orthotropic elastic materials with voids is investigated. Then, the solution of the problem of extension and bending is expressed in terms of solutions of three plane strain problems. The results are used to study the extension of a circular cylinder with a special kind of inhomogeneity. The influence of the material inhomogeneity on the axial strain is established.      

The Stanley Conjecture on Intersections of Four Monomial Prime Ideals

We show that the Stanley's Conjecture holds for an intersection of four monomial prime ideals of a polynomial algebra S over a field and for an arbitrary intersection of monomial prime ideals (P _i ) _i∈[s] of S such that each P _i is not contained in the sum of the other (P _j ) _j≠i .     

Oversampling generates super-wavelets

We show that the second oversampling theorem for affine systems generates super-wavelets. These are frames generated by an affine structure on the space .

     

An alternative approach to the Faber–Krahn inequality for Robin problems

We give a simple proof of the Faber–Krahn inequality for the first eigenvalue of the p-Laplace operator with Robin boundary conditions. The techniques introduced allow to work with much less regular domains by using test function arguments. We substantially simplify earlier proofs, and establish the sharpness of the inequality for a larger class of domains at the same time.     

Fourier frequencies in affine iterated function systems

We examine two questions regarding Fourier frequencies for a class of iterated function systems (IFS). These are iteration limits arising from a fixed finite families of affine and contractive mappings in Rd, and the “IFS” refers to such a finite system of transformations, or functions. The iteration limits are pairs (X,μ) where X is a compact subset of Rd (the support of μ), and the measure μ is a probability measure determined uniquely by the initial IFS mappings, and a certain strong invariance axiom. The two questions we study are: (1) existence of an orthogonal Fourier basis in the Hilbert space L²(X,μ); and (2) explicit constructions of Fourier bases from the given data defining the IFS.     

On the first eigenvalue of a fourth order Steklov problem

We prove some results about the first Steklov eigenvalue d ₁ of the biharmonic operator in bounded domains. Firstly, we show that Fichera’s principle of duality (Fichera in Atti Accad Naz Lincei 19:411–418, 1955) may be extended to a wide class of nonsmooth domains. Next, we study the optimization of d ₁ for varying domains: we disprove a long-standing conjecture, we show some new and unexpected features and we suggest some challenging problems. Finally, we prove several properties of the ball.
