Superposed flow between two discs contrarotating at differential speeds

This paper describes a combined computational and experimental study of the flow between two contrarotating discs for −1 ≤ Γ ≤ 0 (where Γ is the ratio of the speed of the slower disc to that of the faster one) for the case where there is a superposed radial outflow of air. The computations were conducted using an elliptic solver and a low-Reynolds-number k-ε turbulence model, and velocity measurements were made using a laser-Doppler anenometry system. Two basic flow structures can occur: Batchelor-type flow, where there are separate boundary layers on each disc with a rotating core of fluid between, and Stewartson-type flow, where there is virtually no core rotation. The main effect of a superposed flow is to reduce the core rotation and to promote the transition from Batchelor-type flow to Stewartson-type flow. For most of the results, there is good agreement between the computed and measured velocities. Computed moment coefficients show that, for Γ = −1, superposed flow has little effect on C_m: an accepted correlation of C_m for a free disc should provide a useful estimate for design purposes.     

Stereospecific synthesis of a dl-gala-aminoquercitol derivative

A new aminoquercitol derivative was synthesized starting from 1,4-cyclohexadiene. Photooxygenation of cyclohexa-1,4-diene afforded anti-2,3-dioxabicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-en-5-yl hydroperoxide as the main product. The formed hydroperoxy endoperoxide was reduced with LiAlH₄ to produce anti-2,3-dioxabicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-en-5-ol. Protection of alcohol with acetyl chloride followed by reduction of the endoperoxide with thiourea, and then palladium-catalyzed ionization/cyclization reaction gave an oxazolidinone derivative. Hydrolysis of the oxazolidinone ring and acetylation gave an amino compound. Oxidation of the double bond in the amino compound with OsO₄ followed by acetylation gave the amino tetraacetate and removal of the acetate groups furnished the desired aminoquercitol whose exact configuration was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis.     

The generalized order-k Fibonacci–Pell sequence by matrix methods

In this paper, we consider the usual and generalized order-k Fibonacci and Pell recurrences, then we define a new recurrence, which we call generalized order-k F–P sequence. Also we present a systematic investigation of the generalized order-k F–P sequence. We give the generalized Binet formula, some identities and an explicit formula for sums of the generalized order-k F–P sequence by matrix methods. Further, we give the generating function and combinatorial representations of these numbers. Also we present an algorithm for computing the sums of the generalized order-k Pell numbers, as well as the Pell numbers themselves.     

Determining optimal treatment rate after a disaster

From the standpoint of medical services, a disaster is a calamitous event resulting in an unexpected number of casualties that exceeds the therapeutic capacities of medical services. In these situations, effective medical response plays a crucial role in saving life. To model medical rescue activities, a two-priority non-preemptive S-server, and a finite capacity queueing system is considered. After constructing Chapman–Kolmogorov differential equations, Pontryagin's minimum principle is used to calculate optimal treatment rates for each priority class. The performance criterion is to minimize both the expected value of the square of the difference between the number of servers and the number of patients in the system, and also the cost of serving these patients over a determined time period. The performance criterion also includes a final time cost related to deviations from the determined value of the desired queue length. The two point boundary value problem is numerically solved for different arrival rate patterns and selected parameters.     

A value-adding approach to reliability under preventive maintenance costs and its applications

No equipment (system) can be perfectly reliable in spite of the utmost care and best efforts on the part of the designer, decision-maker and manufacturer. The two sides of maintenance are corrective and preventive maintenance. It is generally assumed that a preventive maintenance action is less costly than a repair maintenance action. We examine this proposition in detail on the basis of a failure-time model that relates conformance quality to reliability. Illustratively, we present reliability in the context of contracts with asymmetric information. The model shows how to overcome information rents through price distortions and quantity rationing. The paper ends with a conclusion and an outlook to future studies.     

Photonic crystal slabs demonstrating strong broadband suppression of transmission in the presence of disorders

We characterize the transmission spectra of out-of-plane, normal-incidence light of two-dimensional silicon photonic crystal slabs and observe excellent agreement between the measured data and finite-difference time-domain simulations over the 1050-1600-nm wavelength range. Crystals that are 340 nm thick and have holes of 330-nm radius on a square lattice of 998-nm pitch show 20-dB extinction in transmission from 1220 to 1255 nm. Increasing the hole radius to 450 nm broadens the extinction band further, and we obtain >85% extinction from 1310 to 1550 nm. Discrepancies between simulation and measurement are ascribed to disorder in the photonic lattice, which is measured through image processing on high-resolution scanning electron micrographs. Analysis of crystal imperfections indicates that they tend to average out narrowband spectral features, while having relatively small effects on broadband features.     

2,3-Dioxabicyclo

The photooxygenation of 1,4-cyclohexadiene (3) affords the diastereomeric hydroperoxy endoperoxides exo-4 and endo-4 and the diastereomeric hydroperoxides trans-5 and cis-5 in a ratio of 87:9:3. 5:0.5. Selective reduction of hydroperoxide group in the endoperoxides exo-4 and endo-4 in the presence of titanium tetraisopropoxide-diethyl sulfide gave the corresponding hydroxy endoperoxides exo-7 and endo-7, which on PCC oxidation leads to the phenol-derived keto endoperoxide 2. The triphenylphosphine deoxygenation of the keto endoperoxide 2 produces a 9:1 mixture of 1, 2- and 1,4-dihydroxybenzenes 10 and 11, while the CoTPP-catalyzed rearrangement affords the bisepoxide 12, malealdehyde (13), and beta-lactone 14. The mechanisms of these transformations are presented.     

Synthesis and spectral characterization of macrocyclic Ni<Superscript>II</Superscript> complexes derived from various diamines,Ni<Superscript>II</Superscript> perchlorate and 1,4-bis(2-carboxyaldehydephenoxy)butane

Six new macrocyclic complexes were synthesized by reaction of 1,4-bis(2-carboxyaldehyde phenoxy)butane with various diamines. Then, their nickel(II) perchlorate complexes were synthesized by the template effect by reaction of 1,4-bis(2-carboxyaldehyde phenoxy)butane, Ni(ClO₄)₂ · 6H₂O and various diamines. The metal-to-ligand ratio of Ni^II metal complexes was found to be 1:1. The compounds are coordinated to the central metal as tetradentate O₂N₂ ligands The Ni^II complexes are proposed to exhibit tetrahedral geometry. Ni^II metal complexes are 1:2 electrolytes as shown by their molar conductivities (Λ_M) in DMF (dimethyl formamide) at 10⁻³ m. The structure of Ni^II metal complexes is proposed from elemental analysis, f.t.-i.r., u.v.-vis., magnetic susceptibility measurements, molar conductivity measurements and mass spectra.     

Imination of sulfoxides using 3-acetoxyaminoquinazolinone as nitrogen source in the presence of hexamethyldisilazane

The reaction of 3-acetoxyaminoquinazolinone (QNHOAc) with various sulfoxides in the presence of HMDS as an acetic acid scavenger, afforded the corresponding sulfoximides in good yields. Sulfoximidation of phenyl methyl sulfoxide using a Q*NHOAc having a stereogenic centre on its 2-position gave the products in 1.3:1 ratio of diastereomers.
