Some polishing experiments on copper in a hyperbolic cell

Some polishing experiments have been carried out on copper anodes in a hyperbolic cell designed by Gilmont and Walton, using orthophosphoric acid as the electrolyte. The results obtained have been compared to those obtained in similar experiments in a Hull cell. It has been found that very similar bands of different reflectivity and polishes are found to form in both the cells. These bands shift with time and a study of such displacements has been made. The results are briefly discussed.     

Irradiation of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene

An ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene material covering a range of crystallinity from 42 to 79% increased in calorimetric crystallinity as a result of chain scission following ionizing irradiation. Carbonyl was formed by a diffusion-limited reaction of oxygen with long-lived free radicals. Trans-vinylene production was linear with radiation dose and was highest for the sample of highest crystallinity but was not sensitive to environment.     

Major volatile constituents of Annona squamosa L. bark

The volatile constituents of Annona squamosa L. bark were identified from the essential oil obtained by steam distillation and studied by GC/MS. Six major components were identified as 1H-Cycloprop(e)azulene (3.46%), germacrene D (11.44%), bisabolene (4.48%), caryophyllene oxide (29.38%), bisabolene epoxide (3.64%) and kaur-16-ene (19.13%). The oil was also screened for its antimicrobial activity, which exhibited a significant antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus.     

Deposition of copper iodide thin films by chemical bath deposition (CBD) and successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) methods

In this paper, we report structural, morphological, electrical studies of copper iodide (CuI) thin films deposited onto glass substrates by chemical bath deposition (CBD) and successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) methods. CuI thin films were characterized for their structural, morphological and wettability studies by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical absorption, and contact angle measurement methods. Thickness of thin films was 1 ± 0.1 μm measured by gravimetric weight difference method. The CuI thin films were nanocrystalline, with average crystal size of ～60 nm. The FT-IR study confirmed the formation of CuI on the substrate surface. SEM images revealed the compact and cube like structure for CuI thin films deposited by CBD and SILAR methods, respectively. Optical absorption study revealed optical energy gaps as 2.3 and 3.0 eV for CBD and SILAR methods, respectively. Wettability study indicated that CuI thin films deposited by SILAR method are more hydrophobic as compared to CBD method.     

Enantioselective HPLC resolution of synthetic intermediates of armodafinil and related substances

Armodafinil is a unique psychostimulant recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of narcolepsy. The chromatographic resolution of its chiral intermediates including related substances in the total synthesis of armodafinil was studied on polysaccharide-based stationary phases, viz. cellulose tris-(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) (Chiralcel OD-H) and amylose tris-(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) (Chiralpak AD-H) by HPLC. The effects of 1-propanol, 2-propanol, ethanol, and trifluoroacetic acid added to the mobile phase and of column temperature on resolution were studied. A good separation was achieved on cellulose-based Chiralcel OD-H column compared to amylose-based Chiralpak AD-H. The effects of structural features of the solutes and solvents on discrimination between the enantiomers were examined. Baseline separation with R(s) >1.38 was obtained using a mobile phase containing n-hexane-ethanol-TFA (75:25:0.15 v/v/v). Detection was carried out at 225 nm with photodiode array detector while identification of enantiomers was accomplished by a polarimetric detector connected in series. The method was found to be suitable not only for process development of armodafinil but also for determination of the enantiomeric purity of bulk drugs and pharmaceuticals.     

Computational design, synthesis and biological evaluation of para-quinone-based inhibitors for redox regulation of the dual-specificity phosphatase Cdc25B

Quinoid inhibitors of Cdc25B were designed based on the Linear Combination of Atomic Potentials (LCAP) methodology. In contrast to a published hypothesis, the biological activities and hydrogen peroxide generation in reducing media of three synthetic models did not correlate with the quinone half-wave potential, E(1/2).     

Oxalic acid as a versatile catalyst for one pot facile synthesis of 3,4‐dihydropyrimidin‐2‐(1H)‐ones and their thione analogues

3,4‐Dihydropyrimidin‐2‐(1H)‐ones and their thione analogues are synthesized from the condensation of aromatic aldehydes, β‐dicarbonyl compound and urea or thiourea in presence of 5 mol% of oxalic acid in ethanol‐water (1:2; v/v) under mild reaction conditions. The yields obtained are better and also the use of very inexpensive catalyst, environmentally benign solvent and easy work‐up are the advantageous aspects of the present method.     

Analysis of Renal Cell Carcinoma Cell Response to the Enhancement of 5-aminolevulinic Acid-mediated Protoporphyrin IX Fluorescence by Iron Chelator Deferoxamine†

As a tumor photodiagnostic agent, 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is metabolized in the heme biosynthesis pathway to produce protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) with fluorescence. ALA-PpIX fluorescence was evaluated in human renal cell carcinoma (RCC) cell lines and non-tumor HK-2 cell lines. We found that extracellular PpIX level was correlated with ABCG2 activity, illustrating its importance as a PpIX efflux transporter. Extracellular PpIX was also related to the K_m of ferrochelatase (FECH) that chelates PpIX with ferrous iron to form heme. The V_max of FECH was higher in all RCC cell lines tested than in the HK-2 cell line. TCGA dataset analysis indicates a positive correlation between FECH expression and RCC patient survival. These findings suggest FECH as an important biomarker in RCC. Effects of iron chelator deferoxamine (DFO) on the enhancement of PpIX fluorescence were assessed. DFO increased intracellular PpIX in both tumor and non-tumor cells, resulting in no gain in tumor/non-tumor fluorescence ratios. DFO appeared to increase ALA-PpIX more at 1-h than at 4-h treatment. There was an inverse correlation between ALA-PpIX fluorescence and the enhancement effect of DFO. These results suggest that enhancement of ALA-PpIX by DFO may be limited by the availability of ferrous iron in mitochondria following ALA administration.
