A DANREF certified reference plastic for measurement of overall migration into the food simulant olive oil by single sided testing

A reference material for the determination of overall migration from a plastic coextrudate into the fatty food simulant olive oil was produced and certified in an interlaboratory study. The analyses were carried out according to the ENV 1186 standard from the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) [ 1, 2, 3] with exposure of the coextrudate to olive oil for 10 days at 40 degrees C. After an initial preliminary interlaboratory study eight laboratories participated in the certification round, and two different methods were used to obtain single sided exposure of the plastic to the oil. The certified value was determined as the mean of laboratory mean values. No outliers were found. A reference value of 8.6 mg/dm2 +/- 1.4 mg/dm2 (+/- half width of the 95% confidence interval) was obtained which is within the range relevant for the regulatory limit (10 mg/ dm2), making this reference material suitable for laboratories measuring according to the EU overall migration limit [4]. The material has been found stable over 45 months.     

Regiochemical variation in the electrophilic addition of HBr to 1-phenylprop-1-yne

The reaction of aryl alkynes with dilute methylene chloride solutions of quaternary ammonium bromide and 20% trifluoroacetic acid produces primarily the syn Markovnikov adducts of hydrogen bromide. At moderate concentrations of the bromide, the principal product is the Markovnikov anti adduct. At high concentrations of bromide, the anti-Markovnikov anti addition product predominates.     

Tablets of functionalized polystyrene beads alone and in combination with solid reagents or catalysts. Preparation and applications in parallel solution and solid phase synthesis

Pretreatment of polystyrene beads with a nonpolar organic solvent is the key for the generation of mechanically robust tablets consisting of neat functionalized polystyrene beads, both alone and in combination with solid reagents or catalysts. The novel dosing methodology provides accurately preweighed tablets in virtually any shape and size and with excellent disintegration properties, speeding up parallel solution and solid phase synthesis. The use of tablets is demonstrated in parallel Mitsunobu and acylation reactions.     

Pseudochelin A,a siderophore of Pseudoalteromonas piscicida S2040

A new siderophore containing a 4,5-dihydroimidazole moiety was isolated from Pseudoalteromonas piscicida S2040 together with myxochelins A and B, alteramide A and its cycloaddition product, and bromo- and dibromoalterochromides. The structure of pseudochelin A was established by spectroscopic techniques including 2D NMR and MS/MS fragmentation data. In bioassays selected fractions of the crude extract of S2040 inhibited the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pseudochelin A displayed siderophore activity in the chrome azurol S assay at concentrations higher than 50 μM, and showed weak activity against the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus, but did not display antibacterial, anti-inflammatory or anticonvulsant activity.     

Analysis of various classes of drugs by capillary supercritical fluid chromatography

Three classes of drugs were screened for analysis feasibility by capillary column supercritical fluid chromatography. These included steroids, therapeutic antibiotic drugs, and drugs of abuse, such as cannabinoids. Supercritical fluid carbon dioxide was used as the mobile phase in conjunction with a methylpolysiloxane stationary phase capillary column and a flame ionization detector. All compounds considered were analyzed either as single component solutions, simple mixtures, or in actual complex mixtures.
