We demonstrate a method to count small numbers of atoms held in a deep, microscopic optical dipole trap by collecting fluorescence from atoms exposed to a standing wave of light that is blue detuned from resonance. While scattering photons, the atoms are cooled by a Sisyphus mechanism that results from the spatial variation in light intensity. The use of a small blue detuning limits the losses due to light-assisted collisions, thereby making the method suitable for counting several atoms in a microscopic volume.  相似文献

The dielectric properties of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) ceramic thin films were characterized up to 50 GHz using coplanar waveguides (CPWs) and metal–insulator–metal (MIM) capacitors with top circular electrodes. The ZrO2 films were deposited using a chemical solution onto high-resistivity Si wafers and metal layers. The real part of the dielectric constant of approximately 22 and 26 was extracted at 50 GHz for CPW and MIM structures, respectively, and the loss tangent was approximately 0.09 at 50 GHz. CV and IV measurements were carried out to determine low-frequency and DC dielectric properties. The measurement results indicate that ZrO2 is a promising material to be used as a dielectric layer for radio-frequency (RF) microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) capacitive switches.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy shows that a layer of graphene can be grown on the hex-reconstructed Pt(100) surface and that the reconstruction is preserved after growth. A continuous sheet of graphene can be grown across domain boundaries and step edges without loss of periodicity or change in direction. Density functional theory calculations on a simple model system support the observation that the graphene can have different rotation angles relative to the hex-reconstructed Pt surface. The graphene sheet direction can be changed by incorporating pentagon-heptagon defects giving rise to accommodation of edge dislocations. The defect formation energy and the induced buckling of the graphene have been characterized by DFT calculations.  相似文献

Conventional methods of recording linearly modulated (LM) optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) require control over either the exciting light intensity, or the ability to pulse the source. For many light sources (e.g. constant-power CW lasers, arc lamps and synchrotrons) this can be problematic. Directly analogous results to LM-OSL can, however, be achieved with non-modulated excitation sources, by ramping the sample period (RSP) of luminescence detection. RSP-OSL has the distinct advantage over LM-OSL in that, since the excitation remains at full power, data accumulation times (that can be considerable) can be reduced by typically 50%. RSP methods are universally applicable and can be employed, for example, where the excitation source is constant heat, rather than light: here, iso-thermal decay of phosphorescence becomes recorded as a sequence of peaks, corresponding to de-trapping of charge from different defect levels, and is particularly useful for analysing shallow-trap effects. RSP methods are also useful in providing significant compaction of data sets, where signal analysis is required of overlapping systems having a wide range of decay kinetics.  相似文献
