High-power intracavity frequency doubling of a Ti:sapphire femtosecond oscillator

We demonstrate intracavity frequency doubling of a standard femtosecond Ti:sapphire oscillator. The cavity is extended with a pair of focusing mirrors and a 0.5-mm-thick BBO crystal. We achieve a repetition rate of 50 MHz and simultaneously generate 22 mW of 55-fs pulses at 810 nm and 200 mW of 73-fs pulses at 405 nm, which corresponds to 4 nJ per pulse. We create a total of 330-mW, 405-nm light when pumping the Ti:sapphire crystal with 5.7 W from an Ar-ion laser, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 5.7%. No saturation is found, which implies that higher outputs can be achieved with higher pump rates. Preliminary results from the use of blue pulses as pump in an optical parametric amplifier seeded by pulses from a photonic crystal fiber are presented. Regiochemical variation in the electrophilic addition of HBr to 1-phenylprop-1-yne

The reaction of aryl alkynes with dilute methylene chloride solutions of quaternary ammonium bromide and 20% trifluoroacetic acid produces primarily the syn Markovnikov adducts of hydrogen bromide. At moderate concentrations of the bromide, the principal product is the Markovnikov anti adduct. At high concentrations of bromide, the anti-Markovnikov anti addition product predominates.     

Tablets of functionalized polystyrene beads alone and in combination with solid reagents or catalysts. Preparation and applications in parallel solution and solid phase synthesis

Pretreatment of polystyrene beads with a nonpolar organic solvent is the key for the generation of mechanically robust tablets consisting of neat functionalized polystyrene beads, both alone and in combination with solid reagents or catalysts. The novel dosing methodology provides accurately preweighed tablets in virtually any shape and size and with excellent disintegration properties, speeding up parallel solution and solid phase synthesis. The use of tablets is demonstrated in parallel Mitsunobu and acylation reactions.     

The $-game

We propose a payoff function extending Minority Games (MG) that captures the competition between agents to make money. In contrast with previous MG, the best strategies are not always targeting the minority but are shifting opportunistically between the minority and the majority. The emergent properties of the price dynamics and of the wealth of agents are strikingly different from those found in MG. As the memory of agents is increased, we find a phase transition between a self-sustained speculative phase in which a “stubborn majority” of agents effectively collaborate to arbitrage a market-maker for their mutual benefit and a phase where the market-maker always arbitrages the agents. A subset of agents exhibit a sustained non-equilibrium risk-return profile. Observation of a 1/t decay law for hot clusters and molecules in a storage ring

The exponential law is valid both for decay from a single quantum state into a continuum and for an ensemble maintained in thermal equilibrium. For statistical decay of an ensemble of isolated systems with a broad energy distribution, the exponential decay is replaced by a 1/t distribution. We present confirmation of this decay law by experiments with cluster anions in a small electrostatic storage ring. Deviations from the 1/t law for such an ensemble give important information on the dynamics of the systems. As examples, we present measurements revealing strong radiative cooling of anions of both metal clusters and fullerenes.     

Functional magnetic resonance imaging with intermolecular multiple-quantum coherences

For the first time, we demonstrate here functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using intermolecular multiple-quantum coherences (iMQCs). iMQCs are normally not observed in liquid-state NMR because dipolar interactions between spins average to zero. If the magnetic isotropy of the sample is broken through the use of magnetic field gradients, dipolar couplings can reappear, and hence iMQCs can be observed. Conventional (BOLD) fMRI measures susceptibility variations averaged over each voxel. In the experiment performed here, the sensitivity of iMQCs to frequency variations over mesoscopic and well-defined distances is exploited. We show that iMQC contrast is qualitatively and quantitatively different from BOLD contrast in a visual stimulation task. While the number of activated pixels is smaller in iMQC contrast, the intensity change in some pixels exceeds that of BOLD contrast severalfold.
