Condensed as-triazines. Synthesis of 7-aryl-8H-[1,4]thiazino[2,3-e]-1,2,4-triazin-3(2H)-one

Ring closure of 6-amino-3-oxo-as-triazine-5-thione with α-haloketones provides the thiazino[2,3-e]-1,2,4-triazines which dehydrate via an unusual pathway to give 7-aryl-8H[1,4]thiazino[2,3-e]-1,2,4-triazin-3(2H)-ones.     

Acyl and α-Ketoacyl Complexes of Pt(II) with Weak Donor Ligands

Treatment of trans-Pt(COCOPh)(Cl)(PPh₃)₂ (1a) with AgBF₄in THF led to the formation of a metastatic complex trans-[Pt(COCOPh)(THF)(PPh₃)₂](BF₄) (2) which readily underwent ligand substitution to give a cationic aqua complex trans-[Pt(COCOPh)(OH₂)(PPh₃)₂](BF₄) (5a). Complex 5a has been characterized spectroscopically and crystallographically. Analogous reaction of trans-Pt(COCOOMe)(Cl)(PPh₃)₂ (1b) with Ag(CF₃SO₃) in dried CH₂C1₂ was found first to yield a methoxyoxalyl triflato complextrans-Pt(COCOOMe)(OTf)(PPh₃)₂ (6). Attempts to crystallize the triflato product in CH₂-cl₂hexane under ambient conditions also afforded an aqua complex of the triflate salt f/wu-[Pt(COCOOMe)(OH₂)(PPhj)₂](CF₃SO₃) (5b). Complex 5a in a noncoordinating solvent such as CH₂C1₂ or CHCl₃ suffered spontaneous decarbonylation to form first cis-[Pt(COPh)(CO)(PPh₃)₂l(BF₄) (3a) then the thermodynamically stable isomer trans-[Pt(COPh)(CO)(PPh₃)₂](BF₄) (3b). Crystallization of complex 3b under ambient conditions resulted in an aqua benzoyl complex trans-[Pt(COPh)(OH₂)(PPh₃)₂](BF₄) (7). The replacement of the H_2O ligand in complex 7 by CO was done simply by bubbling CO into the solution of 7. The single crystal structures of 5b and 7 have been determined by X-ray diffraction. The distances of the Pt-O bonds in 5a, 5b, and 7 support that the aqua ligand is a weak donor in such cationic aquaorganoplatinum(lI) complexes, in agreement with their lability to the substitution reactions.     

Synthesis and study of N,N‐disubstituted 4‐[(4‐aminophenyl)diazenyl]benzylidene‐4′‐alkylanilines

A series of N,N‐disubstituted‐4‐[(4‐aminophenyl)diazenyl]benzylidene‐4′‐alkylanilines (azo dyes) were synthesized from the reaction of the corresponding benzaldehyde with alkylanilines. These azo dyes exhibit nematic and SmC phases on heating. Their order parameter, photo‐stability and miscibility were studied by investigation of a representative sample.     

Combining grey relation and TOPSIS concepts for selecting an expatriate host country

As international corporate activities increase, their staffing involves more strategic concerns. However, foreign assignments have many differences, and dissatisfaction with the host country is a known cause of expatriate failure. From the point of view of an expatriate candidate, the decision of whether to take an expatriate assignment can be regarded as a FMCDM (fuzzy multiple criteria decision making) problem. This paper describes a fuzzy AHP (fuzzy analytic hierarchy process) to determine the weighting of subjective judgments. Using the Sugeno integral for λ-fuzzy measure, and using the nonadditive fuzzy integral technique to evaluate the synthetic utility values of the alternatives and the fuzzy weights, then the best host country alternative can be derived with the grey relation model. The authors further combine the grey relation model based on the concepts of TOPSIS (technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution) to evaluate and select the best alternative. A real case of expatriate assignment decision-making was used to demonstrate that the grey relation model combined with the ideas of TOPSIS results in a satisfactory and effective evaluation.     

Fine Substituent Effects in Sandwich Complexes: A Threshold Ionization Study of Monosubstituted Chromium Bisarene Compounds

Mass‐analyzed threshold ionization spectra of jet‐cooled [(η⁶‐PhMe)(η⁶‐PhH)Cr] and [(η⁶‐Ph₂)(η⁶‐PhH)Cr] reveal with unprecedented accuracy the effects of methyl and phenyl groups on the electronic structure of bis(η⁶‐benzene)chromium. These “pure” substituent effects allow quantitative experimental determination of the ionization energy changes caused by the mutual substituent influence in bisarene systems. Two types of such influence have been revealed for the first time in bis(η⁶‐toluene)chromium.     

Fiber-optic CATV system performance improvement by using split-band technique and photonic crystal fiber

A directly-modulated amplitude modulation-vestigial sideband (AM-VSB) cable television (CATV) erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)-repeated system that uses split-band technique and photonic crystal fiber (PCF) as a broadband dispersion compensation device is proposed and demonstrated. In contrast to a conventional externally-modulated fiber-optic CATV system, good performance of carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR), composite second order (CSO) and composite triple beat (CTB) were obtained in our proposed systems over a combination of 100-km single-mode fiber (SMF) and 3.6 km PCF.     

The minimum norm method for the determination of the charge density from elastic electron scattering data

Unphysical behavior in the QR algorithm based least squares determination of the expansion coefficients of the charge density obtained from limited information about the charge form factor occurs when the spread of the singular values in the matrix relating these quantities becomes too large. Setting the smallest singular values equal to zero in the singular value decomposition used in the minimum norm method yields a much more reasonable determination of the charge density. Increasing the size of the basis without increasing the range of the prior information about the charge form factor leads to ambiguities in the determination of the charge density. Numerical results in an analytic model are presented.     

A bidirectional hybrid DWDM-PON employing optical injection locking technique and data comparators

A bidirectional hybrid dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM)-passive optical network (PON) employing optical injection locking technique on vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) and data comparator, as well as optical injection locking technique on distributed feedback laser diodes (DFB LDs) and amplitude/phase compensator is proposed and demonstrated. Improved performances of bit error rate (BER) and carrier-to-noise ratio/composite second order/composite triple beat (CNR/CSO/CTB) were observed in our proposed bidirectional hybrid DWDM-PON. Bidirectional transmission in bidirectional hybrid DWDM-PON architecture is a very attractive option, the capacity of the optical network can be expanded relatively easily by bidirectional transmission technology.
