We have studied electron transport in bipyridyl-dinitro oligophenylene-ethynelene dithiol (BPDN) molecules both in an inert environment and in aqueous electrolyte under potential control, using scanning tunneling microscopy. Current-voltage (IV) data obtained in an inert environment were similar to previously reported results showing conductance switching near 1.6 V. Similar measurements taken in electrolyte under potential control showed a linear dependence of the bias for switching on the electrochemical potential. Extrapolation of the potentials to zero switching bias coincided with the potentials of redox processes on these molecules. Thus switching is caused by a change in the oxidation state of the molecules.  相似文献

Graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs) are wide bandgap semiconductors that can be reduced to metallic graphene nanoribbons. The transformation of GONRs from their semiconductive to the metallic state by annealing has attracted significant interest due to its simplicity. However, the detailed process by which GONRs transform from wide-bandgap semiconductors to semimetals with a near zero bandgap is unclear. As a result, precise control of the bandgap between these two states is not currently achievable. Here, we quantitatively examine the removal of oxygen-containing groups and changes in the bandgap during thermal annealing of GONRs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show the progressive removal of oxygen-containing functional groups. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals that initially small graphene regions in GONRs become large stacked graphitic layers during thermal annealing. These structural and chemical changes are correlated with progressive changes in the electrochemical bandgap, monitored by cyclic voltammetry. These results show that small changes in the thermal annealing temperature result in significant changes to the bandgap and chemical composition of GONRs and provide a straightforward method for tuning the bandgap in oxidized graphene structures.  相似文献

Graphite oxide (GO) is a lamellar substance with an ambiguous structure due to material complexity. Recently published GO-related studies employ only one out of several existing models to interpret the experimental data. Because the models are different, this leads to confusion in understanding the nature of the observed phenomena. Lessening the structural ambiguity would lead to further developments in functionalization and use of GO. Here, we show that the structure and properties of GO depend significantly on the quenching and purification procedures, rather than, as is commonly thought, on the type of graphite used or oxidation protocol. We introduce a new purification protocol that produces a product that we refer to as pristine GO (pGO) in contrast to the commonly known material that we will refer to as conventional GO (cGO). We explain the differences between pGO and cGO by transformations caused by reaction with water. We produce ultraviolet-visible spectroscopic, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic, thermogravimetric, and scanning electron microscopic analytical evidence for the structure of pGO. This work provides a new explanation for the acidity of GO solutions and allows us to add critical details to existing GO models.  相似文献

The first TiCl(4)-mediated condensation of secondary amides with aldehydes and ketones has been achieved. The reaction proceeds at room temperature and is complete within 5 h in most cases. The synthesis of thioacetate derivatized oligoanilines designed for molecular electronic device purposes is described. Reversible oxidation between the non-conductive leuco base and conductive emeraldine salt forms of these compounds may produce switching effects and device behavior. We present a general method for the linear least-squares solutionof overdetermined and underdetermined systems. The method isparticularly efficient when the coefficient matrix is quasi-square,that is when the number of rows and number of columns is almostthe same. The numerical methods for linear least-squares problemsand minimum-norm solutions do not generally take account ofthis special characteristic. The proposed method is based onLU factorization of the original quasi-square matrix A, assumingthat A has full rank. In the overdetermined case, the LU factorsare used to compute a basis for the null space of AT. The right-handside vector b is then projected onto this subspace and the least-squaressolution is obtained from the solution of this reduced problem.In the case of underdetermined systems, the desired solutionis again obtained through the solution of a reduced system.The use of this method may lead to important savings in computationaltime for both dense and sparse matrices. It is also shown inthe paper that, even in cases where the matrices are quite small,sparse solvers perform better than dense solvers. This paper describes the synthetic organic phase of a project directed toward the construction of molecular scale electronic devices. Outlined is a convergent synthetic route to orthogonally fused conjugated organic oligomers. The final systems are to have a potentially conducting chain fused perpendicularly to a second potentially conducting chain via a sigma bonded network. One of the core segments synthesized is based on a spirobithiophene moiety with a central silicon atom. It is formed by a zirconium-promoted bis(bicyclization) of a tetrapropargylsilane. The second core is a 9,9'-spirobifluorene system. Terminal halide groups provide the linkage points for further extension of the chains via Pd-catalyzed or Pd/Cu-catalyzed cross coupling methods. All four branching arms are affixed to the core in a single operation, thus making the syntheses highly convergent. In the cases of the larger functionalized systems, alkyl substituents on the thiophenes afford soluble materials. In order to prepare the molecules with >50 ? lengths, an iterative divergent/convergent approach had to be utilized for the construction of oligo(thiophene-ethynylene) branching arms. Organopalladium-catalyzed procedures are used extensively for the syntheses of the orthogonally fused compounds.  相似文献
