A Simple Frequency Lock of Green YAG Laser to Dispersion Line of the Linear Absorption Spectrum of Iodine Molecules Utilizing an Acousto-Optic Frequency Shifter

Frequency of a 532 nm emission line of a diode-laser-pumped Nd:YAG laser is stabilized by lock of the output line to the linear absorption line of iodine molecules. The stabilization method is very simple utilizing the frequency shift caused with an acousto-optic modulator. The laser frequency was stabilized at the zero-crossing point of the second-derivative of the dispersion curve. Instability obtained by the error signal is affected by the phase-characteristics of detectors, which results in 3^*10^-8.     

Inner Radius of Univalence for a Strongly Starlike Domain

 The inner radius of univalence of a domain D with Poincaré density ρ _D is the possible largest number σ such that the condition ∥ S _f ∥ _D  = sup _{w∈ D} ρ _D (w) ⁻²∥ S _f (z) ∥ ≤ σ implies univalence of f for a nonconstant meromorphic function f on D, where S _f is the Schwarzian derivative of f. In this note, we give a lower bound of the inner radius of univalence for strongly starlike domains of order α in terms of the order α.     

Total synthesis of (+)-obtusenyne

The stereoselective total synthesis of (+)-obtusenyne is described. The oxonene skeleton possessing trans-orientated alkyl substituents at the α,α′-positions was stereoselectively constructed via cyclization of the corresponding hydroxy epoxide promoted by Eu(fod)₃.     

Preparation of flexible and transparent polylactic acids films by crystallization manipulation

Highly flexible and transparent polylactic acids (PLAs) films were successfully prepared by manipulating their crystallization. The semicrystalline poly(L ‐lactic acid) (L) was blended with a noncrystalline poly(DL ‐lactic acid) (DL) together with diglycerol tetraacetate (DGTA). Optimal DGTA content to plasticize PLAs was about 17%. Addition of DL hindered the crystallization of the films. Tensile strengths of the films having DL content more than 5% were about 10 MPa while the elongations at break were boosted as DL content increased. Films having L/DL ratio of 50/50 showed elongations at break of 270%. Stretch ability and clarity of films containing 15–50% DL were fair although they were subjected to annealing at 60 °C for 1 h. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dephasing in neutron interferometry

Wigner functions are used to describe various dephasing effects in neutron interferometry which are caused by thickness variations and density fluctuations of the phase shifter and by variations of the beam parameters. It will be shown that separated coherent Schrödinger-cat-like states, which exist when large phase shifts are applied, are extremely fragile and sensitive to any kind of imperfections. The related dephasing factor depends quadratically on the spatial separation of the coherent states which permits the definition of an upper limit of feasible coherent packet separation. The results show that dephasing is an unavoidable effect caused by intrinsic fluctuations inherent to any physical system.Dedicated to H. Walther on the occasion of his 60th birthday     

Base promoted oxidative decarboxylation of ethyl phenylglycinate via oxaziridine

Base catalyzed decompositions of 2-(α-ethoxycarbonyl-benzyl)-3-phenyl-oxaziridines carried out in benzene in an atmosphere of oxygen yielded N-benzoyl benzamides along with ethyl phenylglyoxylate imine and benzaldehydes.     

The boundary between the spin-glass and ferromagnetic states of the bond-random Ising model in the square lattice at T = 0

The bond-random (±J) Ising model in the square lattice is considered in the square cluster approximation. The boundary between the ferromagnetic and spin-glass states at T = 0 is obtained as the transition point from the asymmetric distribution of the effective fields to the symmetric distribution. The concentration of this transition, P_FG is obtained by solving the integral equation for the distribution function of the effective fields.     

Mössbauer spectroscopic study of frozen solutions of57Co using a specially designed cryostat for time differential coincidence emission Mössbauer spectroscopy of237Np

Experiments on the⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer effect in frozen solutions were carried out in order to demonstrate the capabilities of a cryostat which was developed for the emission Mössbauer spectroscopy of²³⁷Np. We confirmed the existence of an aliovalent state of⁵⁷Fe in the temperature range from 5.5 to 35 K. However, the relative amounts of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in the frozen matrix were almost constant for the temperature range from 5.5 to 150 K. The design, operation and capabilities of the cryostat are also described.     

Studies on thermophile products. V. Immunosuppressive profile in vitro of Bacillus stearothermophilus component, Fr.5-B.

The immunosuppressive profile of Bacillus stearothermophilus UK563 component, Fr.5-B, is presented in in vitro studies. Fr.5-B (0.1-1000 ng/ml), provided it was added at the initiation of mixed leukocyte reaction (MLR), inhibited dose-dependently the incorporation of tritiated thymidine ([3H]TdR) into mouse spleen cells and human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Even the addition of Fr.5-B 48 h after the onset of culture suppressed mouse MLR, unlike cyclosporin A (CYA). Fr.5-B significantly inhibited cytotoxic T lymphocyte generation determined by [3H]TdR-release micro-cytotoxicity assay by using mouse mastocytoma P815 as targets. Moreover, this component decreased dose-dependently the expression of class II major histocompatibility molecules (Ia) on mouse peritoneal macrophages induced by concanavalin A supernatant. The present results revealed the unique immunosuppressive property of Fr.5-B which was different from that of CYA.
