First preparation and structural determination of 1,1-disubstituted dibenzo[bc,fg][1,4]silathiapentalene derivatives by x-ray crystallographic analysis and MO calculations

1,1-Dimethyldibenzo[bc,fg][1,4]silathiapentalene ( 1a ) was prepared by treatment of 1,9-bis(methyl-sulfinyl)dibenzothiophene with EtMgBr or of dibenzothiophene with n-butyllithium, and then with dimethyl dichlorosilane. The structure of 4,4-dimethyl-dibenzo[bc,fg][1,4]silathiapentalene 1-oxide ( 2 ), obtained by oxidation of compound 1a with mCPBA, was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The structure of compound 2 determined experimentally was compared to the structure obtained by semiempirical molecular orbital calculations (AM1). The MO calculations of compound 1a and its phenyl analog 1b were also performed by AM1 to evaluate their structures. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Inclusion Complex Formation of Thiacalix[4]arene and Xe in Aqueous Solution Studied by Hyperpolarized 129Xe NMR

The inclusion complex formation of 4-sulfothiacalix[4]arene sodium salt (STCAS) and Xe has been investigated by using hyperpolarized ¹²⁹Xe NMR spectroscopy. Our new continuous-flow type hyperpolarizing system has advantageous capabilities that can supply hyperpolarized gases continuously and directly to a sample solution in a NMR tube. Consequently saturated Xe concentration in the aqueous solution of STCAS is maintained during the NMR experiment, and ¹²⁹Xe NMR spectra can be obtained in remarkably short time. STCAS concentration dependence of ¹²⁹Xe chemical shift has been analyzed in an elaborated way by a computer method as well as a simple graphic method that we have proposed. The association constant K:13.6±0.8 M⁻¹ at 25 °C was obtained, and further analysis of the temperature dependence has successfully given thermodynamic parameters of enthalpy (ΔH) and entropy (ΔS) for the inclusion complex formation: ΔH = −11.9±1.9 kJ mol⁻¹ and ΔS = −17.4±5.8 JK⁻¹ mol⁻¹. The energetic aspects of complex formation are discussed from the size effect and from the molecular theory of standard entropy, and a release of definite number of water molecules from STCAS cavity is suggested in the inclusion complex formation with Xe.     

Digital image analysis of polymer blends morphology

Application of digital image analysis (DIA) to polymer blends morphology is discussed with examples. Various operations in DIA including two-dimensional Fourier transformation (2DFT), intensity distribution, recursive region extraction, etc. are applied to morphology of polymer blends due to spinodal decomposition (SD), nucleation 6 growth (NG), and eutectic solidification (ES). Merits and drawbacks of DIA to study polymer blends morphology are discussed and the possibility of future development is presented.     

Investigation of the influence of cell density of human fibroblasts cryopreserved inside collagen sponges at various cooling rates

The influence of cell density of cells cryopreserved inside a collagen matrix at various cooling rates was investigated. Human fibroblasts were three-dimensionally cultured for 2 days in a collagen sponge (20 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness) as an extracellular matrix to imitate biological tissue (artificial tissue). Different cell densities for the artificial tissue were used, from 10(5) to 10(7) cells/cm(3). Four artificial tissues were first stacked in a test chamber, frozen at a cooling rate of 0.3 to 50 degrees C/min in a solution of Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium, 20% fetal bovine serum and 10% dimethylsulfoxide, kept frozen below -185 degrees C for 2 hours, and then finally thawed. Membrane integrity of fibroblasts using a trypan blue exclusion assay was evaluated as an index for post-thaw cellular viability. Results show that with increasing cell density, the post-thaw membrane integrity decreased. Therefore, in the cryopreservation of biological tissue, it seems high cell density is one factor which causes a decline in viability.     

Demonstration of laser-frequency upshift by electron-density modulations in a plasma wakefield

In a plasma wake wave generated by a high power laser, modulations of the electron density take the shape of paraboloidal dense shells, moving almost at the speed of light. A counterpropagating laser pulse is partially reflected from the shells, acting as relativistic flying mirrors, producing a time-compressed frequency-multiplied pulse due to the double Doppler effect. The counterpropagating laser pulse reflection from the plasma wake wave accompanied by its frequency multiplication (with a factor from 50 to 114) was detected in our experiment.     

Reentrant isotropic-calamitic nematic phase transition in potassium laurate-decanol- D<Subscript>2</Subscript>O mixtures

The phase diagram is an interesting field of research, particularly in lyotropic liquid crystals (LLC). In this way, one of the most important phase diagrams of this LLC system was reported by Yu and Saupe. Two uniaxial (calamitic--N(C) and discotic--N(D)) and one biaxial nematic (N(B)) phases were determined by these authors. Furthermore, in this phase diagram the classical isotropic phase (I was observed at high temperature as well as a reentrant isotropic phase (I(RE)) which takes place at lower temperature. Later, this phase diagram was also studied by several authors and in all cases the I(RE)-N(C)-I phase transitions were not observed. In this work, we present a study of this phase diagram through digital image processing and refractometry optical techniques. The occurrence of these phase transitions is investigated and characterized. In addition, the order parameter is obtained based on the Vuks hypothesis from a particular point, in the range of the N(C) phase, where the absolute value of the optical birefringence (Deltan is maximum.
