Chilling resistances of isolates of Pythium ultimum var. ultimum from the Arctic and Temperate Zones

Chilling resistances in moss pathogenic fungi, Pythium ultimum var. ultimum, from Longyearbyen, Svalbard (78 degree N, 15 degree E), located in the Arctic Zone and in the same isolates from Temperate Zone, were determined. Both strains had similar optimum growth temperatures. However, the strains from Svalbard could grow and survive at 0 - 5 degrees C. In addition, chilling treatment induced irregular mycelial morphology in the Arctic isolates. On the other hand, the isolates from Japan did not grow at temperatures below 5C and were destroyed after chilling stress (0 degree C for 3 days or at 4 degrees C for 1 week). The results suggested that isolates from Svalbard highly adapted to the severe spring condition in Polar environments.     

Waveguide holograms: A new approach to hologram integration

A new class of holography is proposed, in which (1) the evanescent part of a guided wave, or (2) the guided wave in a thin-film hologram is utilized as the reference wave and/or the illuminating one. The hologram was designated as “wave-guide hologram” and has advantages in the possibility of integration, wide field of view, and compactness and high reliability of the reconstructing system. The possibility of the waveguide hologram has been proved through reconstruction experiments with a guided wave of a waveguide hologram recorded with a plane reference wave.     

The modulation transfer function in the hologram copying process

The concept of MTF is introduced to analyze and describe consistently the hologram copying process, considering the original hologram as a volume hologram. The effect of the copying condition on the quality of the replica is expressed quantitatively in terms of the MTF. It turns out that holograms can be copied most successfully when the copying beam is oriented parallel to the original reference beam. The theoretical prediction is experimentally confirmed.     

Interference, fluctuation, and alternation of electron tunneling in protein media. 2. Non-condon theory for the energy gap dependence of electron transfer rate

Developing the quantum transition rate theory of Prezhdo and Rossky (J. Chem. Phys. 1997, 107, 5863), we produced a new non-Condon theory of the rate of electron transfer (ET) which happens through a protein medium with conformational fluctuation. The new theory is expressed by a convolution form of the power spectrum for the autocorrelation function of the electronic tunneling matrix element T(DA)(t) with quantum correction and the ordinary Franck-Condon factor. The new theory satisfies the detailed balance condition for the forward and backward ET rates. The ET rate formula is divided into two terms of elastic and inelastic tunneling mechanisms on the mathematical basis. The present theory is applied to the ET from Bph(-) to Q(A) in the reaction center of Rhodobacter sphaeroides. Numerical calculations of T(DA)(t) were made by a combined method of molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemistry calculations. We showed that the normalized autocorrelation function of T(DA)(t) is almost expressed by exponential forms. The calculated energy gap law of the ET rate is nearly Marcus' parabola in most of the normal region and around the maximum region, but it does not decay substantially in the inverted region, which is called the anomalous inverted region. We also showed that the energy gap law at the high uphill energy gap in the normal region is elevated considerably from the Marcus' parabola, which is called the anomalous normal region. Those anomalous energy gap laws are due to the inelastic tunneling mechanism which works actively at the energy gap far from zero. We presented an empirical formula for easily calculating the non-Condon ET rate, which is usable by many researchers. We provided experimental evidence for the anomalous inverted region which was basically reproduced by the present theory. The present theory was extensively compared with the previous non-Condon theories.     

Iridium complex-catalyzed highly enantio- and diastereoselective [2+2+2] cycloaddition for the synthesis of axially chiral teraryl compounds

An asymmetric [2+2+2] cycloaddition of an alpha,omega-diyne, possessing ortho-substituted aryl groups on its terminus, and a monoalkyne with oxygen functionalities gave various axially chiral teraryl compounds. The coupling proceeded with extremely high enantio- (>99.5% ee) and diastereoselectivities (dl/meso = >95/5) when catalyzed by an iridium-chiral phosphine complex. As the products were readily transformed into diol compounds by deprotection without racemization, the present procedure provides access to a new chiral pool of diol compounds with C2 symmetry.     

Single-particle light scattering study of polyethyleneglycol-grafted poly(ureaurethane) microcapsule in ethanol

Microcapsules having polyethyleneglycol-grafted poly(ureaurethane) (PUU) membrane and di-2ethylhexyl phthalate core have been prepared, and the structure when they were suspended in dispersing ethanol have been studied by means of single-particle light scattering method. The PUU membrane was synthesized from monomers with aromatic functional groups (microcapsule MC110) and hexamethylene functional groups (microcapsule MC160). Because the outer and inner solvent passed through the membrane easily, the outside and inside of the membrane were the same at the equilibrium state. The thickness of the wall membrane was significantly smaller than that calculated from the overall weight ratio of the wall-forming material and the core solvents. It was attributed to low affinity of PUU membranes and ethanol.     

Nakiterpiosin and nakiterpiosinone, novel cytotoxic C-nor-D-homosteroids from the Okinawan sponge Terpios hoshinota

Two new cytotoxic compounds, nakiterpiosin (1) and nakiterpiosinone (2), were isolated from the Okinawan sponge Terpios hoshinota. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis. The absolute stereostructure of 1 was also determined by a modified Mosher's method. Nakiterpiosin (1) and nakiterpiosinone (2) showed potent cytotoxicity against mouse lymphocytic leukemia cell (P388).     

Comparison in fractal dimension between those obtained from structure factor and viscoelasticity of gel networks of 1,3:2,4-bis-O-(p-methylbenzylidene)-D-sorbitol in polystyrene melt at gel point

We investigated time evolution of shear moduli in the physical gelation process of 1,3:2,4-bis-O-(p-methylbenzylidene)-D-sorbitol in polystyrene melt. At the gel point, storage and loss shear moduli, G' and G", were described by the power law of frequency omega, G' approximately G" approximately omegan, with the critical exponent n being nearly equal to 2/3, in agreement with the value predicted by the percolation theory. We also investigated the structure factor over two decades in length scale at gel point by using ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering, and small-angle X-ray scattering. We found the power-law behavior in low-q region, indicating that the gel network forms the self-similar structure with mass-fractal dimension. Comparison between the exponent of mass-fractal dimension from structure factor and that from viscoelasticity indicates that hydrodynamic interactions are completely screened out and the excluded volume effects are dominant in the gel. The gel strength was found to increase with the decrease in the lower limit length scale of fractality.
