Pressure-dependent viscosity of powder injection moulding compounds

A single piston capillary rheometer was modified by the addition of a second chamber with a restricting valve (developed at the Polymer Centre, Zlín, Czech Republic), which provides backpressure and increasing the pressure in the melted material during the flow through the die. The Carreau–Yasuda model was employed to fit the measured viscosity data and determine the temperature and pressure coefficients for polyolefin based binder and its compounds with carbide powder. Both temperature and pressure sensitivity coefficients are largely dependent on the structure of a polymer, which should be taken into account for binder-formation’s development. Increasing the loading level of the powder in the compound diminishes the pressure sensitivity of their flow properties.     

Insights into Antimalarial Activity of N-Phenyl-Substituted Cinnamanilides

Due to the urgent need of innovation in the antimalarial therapeutic arsenal, a series of thirty-seven ring-substituted N-arylcinnamanilides prepared by microwave-assisted synthesis were subjected to primary screening against the chloroquine-sensitive strain of P. falciparum 3D7/MRA-102. The lipophilicity of all compounds was experimentally determined as the logarithm of the capacity factor k, and these data were subsequently used in the discussion of structure-activity relationships. Among the screened compounds, fourteen derivatives exhibited IC₅₀ from 0.58 to 31 µM, whereas (2E)-N-(4-bromo-2-chlorophenyl)-3-phenylprop-2-enamide (24) was the most effective agent (IC₅₀ = 0.58 µM). In addition, (2E)-N-[2,6-dibromo-4-(trifluoromethyl)- phenyl]-3-phenylprop-2-enamide (36), (2E)-N-[4-nitro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-3-phenylprop- 2-enamide (18), (2E)-N-(2-bromo-5-fluorophenyl)-3-phenylprop-2-enamide (23), and (2E)-3-phenyl-N-(3,4,5-trichlorophenyl)prop-2-enamide (33) demonstrated efficacy in the IC₅₀ range from 2.0 to 4.3 µM, comparable to the clinically used standard chloroquine. The results of a cell viability screening performed using THP1-Blue™ NF-κB cells showed that none of these highly active compounds displayed any significant cytotoxic effect up to 20 μM, which makes them promising Plasmodium selective substances for further investigations.     

Electronic structure and electron dynamics at the GaSb(0 0 1) surface studied by femtosecond pump-and-probe pulsed laser photoemission spectroscopy

Transiently excited electron states at the GaSb(0 0 1) surface have been studied by means of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy based on a femtosecond laser system. A normally unpopulated surface electron state has been found at ∼250 meV above the valence band maximum with a strong confinement at the center of the surface Brillouin zone. The lifetime of transiently excited carriers at the intergap surface states has been found to be ∼11 ps, associated with rapid carrier diffusion.     

Stereoselective synthesis of the alpha-allyl C-glycoside of 3-deoxy-D-manno-2-octulosonic acid (KDO) by use of radical chemistry.

Methyl 2-C-allyl-2,6-anhydro-3-deoxy-4,5:7,8-di-O-isopropylidene-D-glycero- D-talo-octonate (9a), the protected alpha-allyl C-glycoside of 3-deoxy-D-manno-2-octulosonic acid (KDO), has been synthesized using a photochemically initiated radical reaction. A phenyl thioglycoside (8) was used as the substrate and allyltributyltin as the acceptor. The stereoselectivity of the reaction was 90:10 in favour of the talo-isomer (alpha-).     

A new diquark model for deep inelastic structure functions

The bulk of data from deep inelasticep, eD, μp, μN, νp and νN scattering is fitted with a new diquark model of nucleons. The proton is found to be mostly in au(ud) ₀ state, where the (ud)₀ diquark has spin and isospin zero. There is hence no trace ofSU(6) symmetry among diquarks in nucleons.     

Transverse momentum distributions of hadrons produced in αα and αp collisions at the CERN intersecting storage rings

The inclusive production of charged hadrons has been measured in αα and αp collisions at nucleon-nucleon c.m. energies (√s_nn)of 31 and 44 GeV, respectively, for transverse momenta p_T up to 5 GeV/c in the central rapidity (y) region. at high p_T the yields are consistent with being 4 times and 16 times highere than the ones in pp interactions at y=0, for αp and αα interactions, respectively. However, an enhancement over these factors, as expected from an earlier FNAL experiment, cannot be ruled out.     

Estimation of Pigment Stoichiometries in Photosynthetic Systems of Purple Bacteria: Special Reference to the (Absence of) Second Carotenoid in LH2

Abstract— In this short communication we present the stoichiometric ratio of bacteriochlorophyll, bacteriopheophytin and carotenoids in a few photosynthetic purple bacteria complexes (whose two-dimensional or three-dimensional structures are well known) determined using the spectrum-reconstruction method (SRCM). An important conclusion of our pigment stoichiometric analysis is the evidence for the absence of the second carotenoid in the light-harvesting complex 2 (LH2). In the process, we also highlight the useful application of SRCM in determining the molar extinction coefficients of carotenoids present in LH1, LH2 or reaction centers for which these values are not known due to isolation problems and/or stability.
