Two experimental programs are aiming to study nuclear collisions in the energy regime in order to explore an essential part of the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. The programs are motivated by observations that indicate a phase transition to take place in this energy domain: the onset of deconfinement. The STAR collaboration proposes an energy scan in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at BNL. The ongoing program of the NA61/SHINE experiment consists of a two-dimensional energy-system size scan in nuclear and elementary collisions. The goal of both programs is to study the properties of the onset of deconfinement and to eventually discover the conjectured critical point of strongly interacting matter. Nanotechnology has great potential to transform science and industry in the fields of energy, material, environment, and medicine.
At the same time, more concerns are being raised about the occupational health and safety of nanomaterials in the workplace
and the implications of nanotechnology on the environment and living systems. Studies on environmental, health, and safety
(EHS) issues of nanomaterials have a strong influence on public acceptance of nanotechnology and, eventually, affect its sustainability.
Oversight and regulation by government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play significant roles in ensuring
responsible and environmentally friendly development of nanotechnology. The EHS studies of nanomaterials can provide data
and information to help the development of regulations and guidelines. We present research results on three aspects of EHS
studies: physico-chemical characterization and measurement of nanomaterials; emission, exposure, and toxicity of nanomaterials;
and control and abatement of nanomaterial releases using filtration technology. Measurement of nanoparticle agglomerates using
a newly developed instrument, the Universal NanoParticle Analyzer (UNPA), is discussed. Exposure measurement results for silicon
nanoparticles in a pilot scale production plant are presented, as well as exposure measurement and toxicity study of carbon

In this research a method for interpolation on arbitrary locally compact groups is developed. The method is based on positive definite functions definable on spaces with group multiplication. To be able to use these functions two steps are necessary. First, positive semidefinite functions are determined using Bochners theorem on commutative groups respectively representation theory in the non commutative case. Then transformations are given to get positive definite out of positive semidefinite functions. For the compact group 50(3) the result is explicitly calculated and implemented in the case of three and five dimensional representations, and is applied to the approximation of energy functions of molecule interactions in 3-space. 相似文献

Convex relaxations can be used to obtain lower bounds on the optimal objective function value of nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programs. However, for some problems, significantly better bounds can be obtained by minimizing the restricted Lagrangian function for a given estimate of the Lagrange multipliers. The difficulty in utilizing Lagrangian duality within a global optimization context is that the restricted Lagrangian is often nonconvex. Minimizing a convex underestimate of the restricted Lagrangian overcomes this difficulty and facilitates the use of Lagrangian duality within a global optimization framework. A branch-and-bound algorithm is presented that relies on these Lagrangian underestimates to provide lower bounds and on the interval Newton method to facilitate convergence in the neighborhood of the global solution. Computational results show that the algorithm compares favorably to the Reformulation–Linearization Technique for problems with a favorable structure. 相似文献

Classical models for flow and transport processes in porous media employ the so-called extended Darcy’s Law. Originally, it was proposed empirically for one-dimensional isothermal flow of an incompressible fluid in a rigid, homogeneous, and isotropic porous medium. Nowadays, the extended Darcy’s Law is used for highly complex situations like non-isothermal, multi-phase and multi-component flow and transport, without introducing any additional driving forces. In this work, an alternative approach by Hassanizadeh and Gray identifying additional driving forces were tested in an experimental setup for horizontal redistribution of two fluid phases with an initial saturation discontinuity. Analytical and numerical solutions based on traditional models predict that the saturation discontinuity will persist, but a uniform saturation distribution will be established in each subdomain after an infinite amount of time. The pressure field, however, is predicted to be continuous throughout the domain at all times and is expected to become uniform when there is no flow. In our experiments, we also find that the saturation discontinuity persists. But, gradients in both saturation and pressure remain in both subdomains even when the flow of fluids stops. This indicates that the identified additional driving forces present in the truly extended Darcy’s Law are potentially significant. 相似文献

Unsteady fluctuating velocity fields can contain large-scale periodic motions with frequencies well separated from those of turbulence. Examples are the wake behind a cylinder or the processing vortex core in a swirling jet. These turbulent flow fields contain large-scale, low-frequency oscillations, which are obscured by turbulence, making it impossible to identify them. In this paper, we present an Eulerian time filtering (ETF) technique to extract the large-scale motions from unsteady statistical non-stationary velocity fields or flow fields with multiple phenomena that have sufficiently separated spectral content. The ETF method is based on non-causal time filtering of the velocity records in each point of the flow field. It is shown that the ETF technique gives good results, similar to the ones obtained by the phase-averaging method. In this paper, not only the influence of the temporal filter is checked, but also parameters such as the cut-off frequency and sampling frequency of the data are investigated. The technique is validated on a selected set of time-resolved stereoscopic particle image velocimetry measurements such as the initial region of an annular jet and the transition between flow patterns in an annular jet. The major advantage of the ETF method in the extraction of large scales is that it is computationally less expensive and it requires less measurement time compared to other extraction methods. Therefore, the technique is suitable in the startup phase of an experiment or in a measurement campaign where several experiments are needed such as parametric studies. 相似文献

The aim of this investigation was to develop receiver and extraction fluids, and subsequently validate an analytical method to quantify the permeation and penetration of flurbiprofen into human pharynx tissue using a Franz diffusion cell. The solubility and stability of flurbiprofen in a suitable receiver fluid, and a suitable extraction method and fluid to recover and quantitate flurbiprofen from human pharynx tissue, were investigated using high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The potential interference of human pharynx tissue in the receiver fluid was also investigated. The HPLC analytical method was successfully validated according to current guidelines. The final receiver fluid demonstrated sufficient solubility and stability, and the extraction method and fluid resulted in >95% recovery of flurbiprofen following exposure to human pharynx tissue. The lower limit of quantitation of flurbiprofen was 0.045 μg/mL in both the receiver and extraction fluids. There was no interference of the human pharynx tissue with the HPLC method. This investigation validated an analytical method for quantitating flurbiprofen, and determined a suitable receiver fluid and extraction method and fluid, which can be used to investigate the permeation and penetration of flurbiprofen through human pharynx tissue using the Franz diffusion cell method. 相似文献

Accurate single-crystal X-ray diffraction data offer a unique opportunity to compare and contrast the atomistic details of bulk heterojunction photovoltaic small-molecule acceptor structure and packing, as well as provide an essential starting point for computational electronic structure and charge transport analysis. Herein, we report diffraction-derived crystal structures and computational analyses on the n-type semiconductors which enable some of the highest efficiency organic solar cells produced to date, 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2′,3′-d′]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]dithiophene ( ITIC ) and seven derivatives (including three new crystal structures: 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-propylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2′,3′-d′]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]dithiophene ( ITIC-C3 ), 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(3-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2′,3′-d′]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]dithiophene ( m -ITIC-C6 ), and 3,9-bis(2-methylene-((3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-6,7-difluoro)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-butylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2′,3′-d′]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]dithiophene ( ITIC-C4-4F ). IDTT acceptors typically pack in a face-to-face fashion with π–π distances ranging from 3.28–3.95 Å. Additionally, edge-to-face packing is observed with S⋯π interactions as short as 3.21–3.24 Å. Moreover, ITIC end group identities and side chain substituents influence the nature and strength of noncovalent interactions (e. g. H-bonding, π–π) and thus correlate with the observed packing motif, electronic structure, and charge transport properties of the crystals. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal relatively large nearest-neighbor intermolecular π-π electronic couplings (5.85–56.8 meV) and correlate the nature of the band structure with the dispersion interactions in the single crystals and core–end group polarization effects. Overall, this combined experimental and theoretical work reveals key insights into crystal engineering strategies for indacenodithienothiophene (IDTT) acceptors, as well as general design rules for high-efficiency post-fullerene small molecule acceptors. 相似文献

Finite‐element analysis is frequently used by engineers at synchrotron beamlines to calculate the elastic deformation of a single crystal undergoing mechanical bending or thermal load. ANSYS® Workbench? software is widely used for such simulations. However, although ANSYS® Workbench? software provides useful information on the displacements, strains and stresses within the crystal, it does not yield the local reciprocal lattice vectors that would be required for X‐ray diffraction calculations. To bridge this gap, a method based on the shape functions and interpolation procedures of the software itself has been developed. An application to the double‐crystal bent Laue monochromator being designed for the I12 (JEEP) wiggler beamline at the Diamond Light Source is presented. 相似文献
