Development of 170 GHz/500 kW gyrotron

A development of 170GHz/500kW level gyrotron was carried out as R&D work of ITER. The oscillation mode is TE_31,8. In a short pulse experiment, the maximum power of 750kW was achieved at 85kV/40A. The efficiency was 22%. In the depressed collector operation, 500kW/36%/50ms was obtained. The maximum efficiency of 40% was obtained at P_RF=470kW whereas the power decrease by the electron trapping was observed. Pulse extension was done up to 10s at P_RF=170kW with the depressed collector operation. The power was limited by the temperature increase of the output window.     

Precise Design of Artificial Cofactors for Enhancing Peroxidase Activity of Myoglobin: Myoglobin Mutant H64D Reconstituted with a “Single‐Winged Cofactor” Is Equivalent to Native Horseradish Peroxidase in Oxidation Activity

H64D myoglobin mutant was reconstituted with two different types of synthetic hemes that have aromatic rings and a carboxylate‐based cluster attached to the terminus of one or both of the heme‐propionate moieties, thereby forming a “single‐winged cofactor” and “double‐winged cofactor,” respectively. The reconstituted mutant myoglobins have smaller K_m values with respect to 2‐methoxyphenol oxidation activity relative to the parent mutant with native heme. This suggests that the attached moiety functions as a substrate‐binding domain. However, the k_cat value of the mutant myoglobin with the double‐winged cofactor is much lower than that of the mutant with the native heme. In contrast, the mutant reconstituted with the single‐winged cofactor has a larger k_cat value, thereby resulting in overall catalytic activity that is essentially equivalent to that of the native horseradish peroxidase. Enhanced peroxygenase activity was also observed for the mutant myoglobin with the single‐winged cofactor, thus indicating that introduction of an artificial substrate‐binding domain at only one of the heme propionates in the H64D mutant is the optimal engineering strategy for improving the peroxidase activity of myoglobin.     

The Stability of the Family of B 2-Type Arrangements

We introduce the family of B ₂-type arrangements as a generalization of the classical Coxeter arrangement of type B ₂ and consider the stability and the freeness of it. We show the freeness and (semi)stability are determined by the combinatorics. Moreover, we give a partial answer to the 4-shift problem, which is a conjecture on the combinatorics and geometry induced from the B ₂-type arrangements.     

Eulerian detachments with local edge-connectivity

For a graph G, a detachment operation at a vertex transforms the graph into a new graph by splitting the vertex into several vertices in such a way that the original graph can be obtained by contracting all the split vertices into a single vertex. A graph obtained from a given graph G by applying detachment operations at several vertices is called a detachment of graph G. While detachment operations may decrease the connectivity of graphs, there are several works on conditions for preserving the connectivity. In this paper, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for a given graph/digraph to have an Eulerian detachment that satisfies a given local edge-connectivity requirement. We also discuss conditions for the detachment to be loopless.

Femtosecond laser-assisted etching of Pyrex glass with aqueous solution of KOH

A femtosecond laser-assisted etching technique was applied to Pyrex glass, a kind of borosilicate glass, to perform removal processing with three-dimensional arbitrarity in design and micrometer-order spatial resolution. An aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide (KOH) was adopted as a highly selective etchant. The rate and selectivity of etching were evaluated from in situ images, and fabrication of three-dimensional microchannels was demonstrated.     

Coherent quantum control of excitons at ultracold and high density in Cu2O with phase manipulated pulses

By phase manipulation of a short laser pulse, it is possible to selectively generate ultracold excitons in a two-photon process while quenching the multiphoton excitation of hot electrons and holes. We show how this technique allows us to suppress the heating of n=1 orthoexcitons in Cu(2)O at high density. Using a laser pulse having an energy of a few microJ and duration of 100 fs, we are thus able to produce a cold exciton gas up to a density of 10(15) cm(-3).     

Some calculations of cohomology groups of finite Alexander quandles
