Ferromagnetic dense Kondo behavior of Ce-Si system

In order to clarify the nonmagnetic-magnetic transition found in Ce-Si system, magnetization measurements have been made to reveal a large reduction of the magnetic moment of Ce atom. Taking into account the results and also the reduction of the magnetic entropy, we propose a dense Kondo model to interpret our Ce-Si system. Kondo temperatures are deduced from various physical quantities and a comparison is made between them. Our Ce-Si system is the first example of a ferromagnetic dense Kondo system.     

Experimental determination of thermal expansivity of several alkali halides at high pressures

Unit-cell volumes of four alkali halides, LiF, NaF, KF and CSCl, were measured to 90 kbar and 800°C using X-ray powder diffraction techniques. NaCl was used as an internal pressure standard. Experimental results were analyzed based on Decker's equation of state for NaCl and thermal expansívities of these four materials were determined as a function of pressure. Volume dependence of thermal expansivity is different for the NaCl and CsCl structures. Comparisons of the present results with theoretical calculations by Birch and Anderson are presented.     

Second-order Coriolis resonance between ν2 and ν5 of CH3F by microwave spectroscopy

The J = 1 ← 0 and J = 2 ← 1 transitions and the l-doubling transitions of J = 2 – 6 of ¹²CH₃F in the ν₂ and ν₅ states were analyzed by taking into account the Coriolis interaction between the two modes. The molecular constants which are derived are: ν₅ - ν₂, 252 412 ± 112; $\text{B}{}_5{}^1$, 25 611.60 ± 0.40; A_ζ5, ?38 772 ± 116; $\text{B}{}_2{}^1$, 25 432.52 ± 0.33; D, 21 838.4 ± 8.2; $\text{q}{}_5{}^1$, 39.58 ± 0.30 MHz; in addition to a few other minor constants. The present result is completely consistent with the recent Raman data of Escribano, Mills, and Brodersen, J. Mol. Spectrosc.61, 249 (1976). Molecular constants in the ν₃ and ν₆ states have also been obtained: B₃, 25 197.570 ± 0.020; B₆, 25 418.917 ± 0.047; A_ζ6ηJ, ?0.562 ± 0.030; |q₆|, 8.70 ± 0.13 MHz. Errors are 2.5 times the standard deviations.     

Microwave spectrum of monodeuterated diacetylene due to vibrationally induced dipole moment

Microwave spectrum of monodeuterated diacetylene (HCCCCD), which is nonpolar in the equilibrium configuration, was observed in various excited states of bending vibrations. Dipole moments in the ν₆, 2ν₆, and ν₆ + ν₉ vibrational states were determined from the Stark effect measurement to be 0.0907(6), 0.1681(14), and 0.0900(4) D with uncertainties in parentheses, where ν₆ and ν₉ denote respectively the CCH bending and lowest frequency bending vibrations. The l-type doubling constant in the ν₆ state is 2.1316(28) MHz. Rotational constants were determined in MHz; ν₆(Π), 4086.2165(44); 2ν₆(Δ), 4087.6963(58); ν₆ + ν₉(Δ), 4097.7537(50); 2ν₈(Δ), 4094.4786(103); ν₆ + ν₇(Δ), 4092.9074(176); ν₇ + ν₈(Δ), 4095.8925(354); 2ν₆ + ν₉(Φ), 4098.9505(339).     

Improvements in Carrier-to-Noise-Ratio (CNR) of Lightwave Amplitude Modulated Vestigial-Sideband (AM-VSB) Transmission Systems by the Use of Optical Isolators

In lightwave community antena television (CATV) systems as well as other optical fiber communication networks, a transmitted optical signal is known to be degraded by an intensity noise produced within the fiber due to the interference between the signal and doubly reflected light. We report on the improvements to the signal degradation due to the double Rayleigh backscattering by inserting optical isolators in the trunk lines of the systems. A carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) has been calculated as a function of the number and the insertion loss of the isolators. The calculated results indicate that there is an optimum number of isolators, and if the insertion loss is less than 0.3 dB, the CNR degradation can be restored by more than 60%. To test the calculated results, we conducted experiments for the specific case of employing one isolator, and obtained good agreements between the two.     

Ribbon-moves for 2-knots with 1-handles attached and Khovanov-Jacobsson numbers

We prove that a crossing change along a double point circle on a -knot is realized by ribbon-moves for a knotted torus obtained from the -knot by attaching a -handle. It follows that any -knots for which the crossing change is an unknotting operation, such as ribbon -knots and twist-spun knots, have trivial Khovanov-Jacobsson number.

     

NEW OBSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SURJECTIVITY OF THE JOHNSON HOMOMORPHISM OF THE AUTOMORPHISM GROUP OF A FREE GROUP

In this paper we construct new obstructions for the surjectivityof the Johnson homomorphism of the automorphism group of a freegroup. We also determine the structure of the cokernel of theJohnson homomorphism for degrees 2 and 3.
