Gamma-ray multiplicities in α-induced compound and precompound reactions

Measurements of γ-ray multiplicities from the¹⁵⁰Sm(α, xn) reactions at beam energies from 40–140 MeV show that the maximum angular momentum transfer occurs at an energy between 12 and 18 MeV higher than that of the maximum of the excitation function for the respective exit channel. At still higher bombarding energies, where precompound processes dominate, a decrease of the multiplicity is observed.

3,4-Homoadamantadiene: generation and regioselective [2+2] cycloaddition of a novel tricyclic bridgehead allene

Dehalogenation of 3-bromo-4-iodo-4-homoadamantene with n-BuLi gave rise to 3,4-homoadamantadiene, a novel tricyclic bridgehead allene, which readily dimerized to head-to-head and head-to-tail [2+2] cycloadducts in a ratio of 96:4. Trapping with 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran was successful to yield the corresponding Diels-Alder adduct.     

1,1'-Dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium-smectites as a novel adsorbent of phenols from water through charge-transfer interactions

The adsorption of 2,4-dichlorophenol onto the 1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium-saponite, a smectite group of clay minerals, from dilute aqueous solution occurred effectively through charge-transfer interactions and such interactions resulted in the change in the color of the 1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium-saponite.     

Dynamical aspects of the photoinduced phase transition in spin-crossover complexes

We report a dynamical study on the photoinduced cooperative changes of the spin configurations in single crystals of the organometal spin-crossover complex. In the photoswitching process between low- and high-spin states, nonlinear characteristics such as thresholdlike behavior, incubation period, and phase separation have been observed. These results demonstrate that the cooperative intersystem crossing mediated by spin-lattice interaction plays a key role in the driving process of a new class of nonequilibrium phenomena so called photoinduced phase transition.     

Mesoporous Silica Layer: Preparation and Opportunity

Periodic mesoporous silicas, which were prepared from silica‐surfactant mesostructured materials, have been investigated for a wide range of application due to their very large surface area, high porosity, pore size uniformity and variation, periodic pore arrangement and possible pore surface modification, after the pioneering papers on the formation of mesoporous silicas (MCM‐41 and FSM‐16). Morphosyntheses from such macroscopic morphologies as bulk monolith and film to nanoscopic ones, nanoparticles and their stable suspension, make mesoporous materials more attractive for applications and detailed characterization. Mesoporous silicas have been studied initially for such applications as adsorbent and catalyst, and more recently, optical, electronic, and bio‐related applications have been investigated. This review summarizes the studies on mesoporous silica film to highlight the present status and future of the preparation, characterization and application of the mesoporous silica film.     

A study of shock wave interaction with a rotating cylinder

Shock wave reflection over a rotating circular cylinder is numerically and experimentally investigated. It is shown that the transition from the regular reflection to the Mach reflection is promoted on the cylinder surface which rotates in the same direction of the incident shock motion, whereas it is retarded on the surface that rotates to the reverse direction. Numerical calculations solving the Navier-Stokes equations using extremely fine grids also reveal that the reflected shock transition from RR MR is either advanced or retarded depending on whether or not the surface motion favors the incident shock wave. The interpretation of viscous effects on the reflected shock transition is given by the dimensional analysis and from the viewpoint of signal propagation.Received: 24 April 2002, Accepted: 16 August 2002, Published online: 25 March 2003     

Development of Radiogallium-Labeled Peptides for Platelet-Derived Growth Factor Receptor β (PDGFRβ) Imaging: Influence of Different Linkers

The purpose of this study is to develop peptide-based platelet-derived growth factor receptor β (PDGFRβ) imaging probes and examine the effects of several linkers, namely un-natural amino acids (D-alanine and β-alanine) and ethylene-glycol (EG), on the properties of Ga-DOTA-(linker)-IPLPPPRRPFFK peptides. Seven radiotracers, ⁶⁷Ga-DOTA-(linker)-IPLPPPRRPFFK peptides, were designed, synthesized, and evaluated. The stability and cell uptake in PDGFRβ positive peptide cells were evaluated in vitro. The biodistribution of [⁶⁷Ga]Ga-DOTA-EG₂-IPLPPPRRPFFK ([⁶⁷Ga]27) and [⁶⁷Ga]Ga-DOTA-EG₄-IPLPPPRRPFFK ([⁶⁷Ga]28), which were selected based on in vitro stability in murine plasma and cell uptake rates, were determined in BxPC3-luc-bearing nu/nu mice. Seven ⁶⁷Ga-labeled peptides were successfully synthesized with high radiochemical yields (>85%) and purities (>99%). All evaluated radiotracers were stable in PBS (pH 7.4) at 37 °C. However, only [⁶⁷Ga]27 and [⁶⁷Ga]28 remained more than 75% after incubation in murine plasma at 37 °C for 1 h. [⁶⁷Ga]27 exhibited the highest BxPC3-luc cell uptake among the prepared radiolabeled peptides. As regards the results of the biodistribution experiments, the tumor-to-blood ratios of [⁶⁷Ga]27 and [⁶⁷Ga]28 at 1 h post-injection were 2.61 ± 0.75 and 2.05 ± 0.77, respectively. Co-injection of [⁶⁷Ga]27 and an excess amount of IPLPPPRRPFFK peptide as a blocking agent can significantly decrease this ratio. However, tumor accumulation was not considered sufficient. Therefore, further probe modification is required to assess tumor accumulation for in vivo imaging.     

Bioinformatics and Functional Analyses Implicate Potential Roles for EOGT and L-fringe in Pancreatic Cancers

Notch signaling receptors, ligands, and their downstream target genes are dysregulated in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), suggesting a role of Notch signaling in pancreatic tumor development and progression. However, dysregulation of Notch signaling by post-translational modification of Notch receptors remains poorly understood. Here, we analyzed the Notch-modifying glycosyltransferase involved in the regulation of the ligand-dependent Notch signaling pathway. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that the expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF) domain-specific O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (EOGT) and Lunatic fringe (LFNG) positively correlates with a subset of Notch signaling genes in PDAC. The lack of EOGT or LFNG expression inhibited the proliferation and migration of Panc-1 cells, as observed by the inhibition of Notch activation. EOGT expression is significantly increased in the basal subtype, and low expression of both EOGT and LFNG predicts better overall survival in PDAC patients. These results imply potential roles for EOGT- and LFNG-dependent Notch signaling in PDAC.
