A concise representation of adsorbate-surface interactions. I. Formulation and model calculation for adsorption of Co on Cu(100) surface

A method is presented to clarify the concepts of the chemisorptive bonds among many chemisorptive interactions. The eigenfunctions of the system are transformed into new orbitals, and the chemisorptive interactions are represented in terms of a few transformed orbitals. To show the usefulness of the present method, the adsorption of CO on the Cu(100) surface is examined within the CNDO/2 approximation. The donation and the type interaction is clearly visualized, and the information of the spatial extent of the chemisorptive interactions is also obtained.     

The nature of sulfur bonding in thiopyrylium cation

Comparison of the PMR spectrum ofthiopyrylium cation with those of the oxygen (pyrylium cation) and nitrogen (pyridinium cation) analogs has suggested the unique electronic structure of the thiopyrylium cation. To investigate this structure the extended Hückel MO calculations have been carried out using two basis sets, one with and another without sulfur 3d orbitals. The electronic structure of thiopyrylium cation can be rationalized by the 3d orbital involvement of the S atom in the basis set. The primary effect of the involvement of 3d orbitals on the S atom is shown to be the electron transfer from the ring carbon fragment, in particular from the β ring carbons, to the S atom, with an accompanying increase in sulfur-α-carbon bond order.     

Energy transport in a concentrated suspension of bacteria

Coherent structures appear in a concentrated suspension of swimming bacteria. While transport phenomena in a suspension have been studied extensively, how energy is transported from the individual cell scale to the larger mesoscale remains unclear. In this study, we carry out the first successful measurement of the three-dimensional velocity field in a dense suspension of bacteria. The results show that most of the energy generated by individual bacteria dissipates on the cellular scale. Only a small amount of energy is transported to the mesoscale, but the gain in swimming velocity and mass transport due to mesoscale coherent structures is enormous. These results indicate that collective swimming of bacteria is efficient in terms of energy. This paper sheds light on how energy can be transported toward smaller wave numbers in the Stokes flow regime.     

Transfer hydrogenation of imines with carboxyl-tailed benzothiazoline as readily removable hydrogen donor

A benzothiazoline bearing 4-carboxyphenyl group at 2-position was developed as an efficient hydrogen donor for the transfer hydrogenation reaction. Introduction of the carboxyl group significantly facilitated the removal of the residual benzothiazoline and benzothiazole by washing with aqueous basic solution. The present approach provides a convenient and straightforward access to various amines with broad substrate scope and in good yields.     

利用水下爆炸法评价火炸药爆炸危险性的研究

本文提供了一种测定火炸药冲击感度,并根据测定值判定其冲击爆炸危险性的新方法测定水下爆炸气泡能法。通过对30几种炸药的试用,判定的结果与文献报道的用其他方法判定的结果相当好的一致。而且本法的优点还在于同时可得到试样的动、静态威力,操作简便、安全、噪音小。此外,利用本试验法还探讨了炸药形态、惰性介质(水)对冲击感度的影响。这些对于处理炸药时应如何采取安全对策具有指导意义。     

Local torus actions modeled on the standard representation

We introduce the notion of a local torus action modeled on the standard representation (for simplicity, we call it a local torus action). It is a generalization of a locally standard torus action and also an underlying structure of a locally toric Lagrangian fibration. For a local torus action, we define two invariants called a characteristic pair and an Euler class of the orbit map, and prove that local torus actions are classified topologically by them. As a corollary, we obtain a topological classification of locally standard torus actions, which includes the topological classifications of quasi-toric manifolds by Davis and Januszkiewicz and of effective T²-actions on four-dimensional manifolds without nontrivial finite stabilizers by Orlik and Raymond. We discuss locally toric Lagrangian fibrations from the viewpoint of local torus actions. We also investigate the topology of a manifold equipped with a local torus action when the Euler class of the orbit map vanishes.
