Synthesis of In<Subscript>2</Subscript>O<Subscript>3</Subscript>nanoparticles by thermal decomposition of a citrate gel precursor

This paper describes the synthesis of indium oxide by a modified sol–gel method, and the study of thermal decomposition of the metal complex in air. The characterization of the intermediate as well as the final compounds was carried out by thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and small angle X-ray scattering. The results show that the indium complex decomposes to In₂O₃ with the formation of an intermediate compound. Nanoparticles of cubic In₂O₃ with crystallite sizes in the nanosize range were formed after calcination at temperatures up to 900°C. Calcined materials are characterized by a polydisperse distribution of spherical particles with sharp and smooth surfaces.This revised version was published online in August 2005 with a corrected issue number.     

Crystal structure of polyisobutylene

The crystal structure of polyisobutylene was determined by x-ray analysis. The orthorhombic cell, with a = 6.88 Å, b = 11.91 Å, c (fiber axis) = 18.60 Å (space group: P2₁2₁2₁ ? D), contains two molecular chains each consisting of eight monomeric units in the fiber identity period. The chain conformation is essentially an (8/3) helix, but deviates appreciably from the exact (8/3) helix symmetry. The symmetry of the molecular chain is only a twofold screw axis in exact sense, and a crystallographic asymmetric unit consists of four monomeric units. The torsional angles are where M denotes the methyl group. The averaged skeletal C? CH₂? C and C? CM₂? C bond angles are 128° and 110°, respectively. The large C? CH₂? C bond angles may be due to steric respulsion between the adjacent methyl groups, giving intramolecular distances larger than 3.09 Å.     

Determination of the Birefringence,the Twist Angle and the Thickness of the Nematic Liquid Crystal Sample by Renormalized Transmission Ellipsometry

Abstract

The birefringence, the twist angle and the thickness of the nematic liquid crystal sample were determined by means of the renormalized transmission ellipsometry. It was proposed that conventional sandwich-type cell is applicable to this ellipsometry measurement and the simplified numerical fitting procedure based on the 4 × 4 matrix method can provide the dispersion of the ordinary and the extraordinary refractive indices. The resolution of the twist angle and cell thickness measurement reaches to 0.05 deg. and 0.05 μm, respectively.     

Signal-to-noise ratio improvement by stochastic resonance in moments in non-dynamical systems with multiple states

Conventional stochastic resonance in terms of signal-to-noise ratio refers to the amplification of a weak signal in the average of the output. In this framework, only the first moment of the output is used for extracting the information about the input signal. However, higher order moments are also modulated by the input signal. We report the occurrence of stochastic resonance in higher moments. Furthermore, by the linear combination of moments, the signal-to-noise ratio improves compared with the conventional method, which uses the lowest moment only.     

Effects of Zinc(II) on the Luminescence of Europium(III) in Complexes Containing β‐Diketone and Schiff Bases

The UV, excitation, and luminescence spectra of tris(pivaloyltrifluoroacetonato)europium(III) ([Eu(pta)₃]; Hpta=1,1,1‐trifluoro‐5,5‐dimethylhexane‐2,4‐dione=HA) were measured in the presence of bis(salicylidene)trimethylenediamine (H₂saltn), bis[5‐(tert‐butyl)salicylidene]trimethylenediamine (H₂(^tBu)saltn), or bis(salicylidene)cyclohexane‐1,2‐diyldiamine (H₂salchn), and the corresponding Zn^II complexes [ZnB] (B=Schiff base). The excitation and luminescence spectra of the solution containing [Eu(pta)₃] and [Zn(salchn)] exhibited much stronger intensities than those of solutions containing the other [ZnB] complexes. The introduction of a ^tBu group into the Schiff base was not effective in sensitizing the luminescence of [Eu(pta)₃]. The luminescence spectrum of [ZnB] showed a band around 450 nm. The intensity decreased in the presence of [Eu(pta)₃], reflecting complexation between [Eu(pta)₃] and [ZnB]. On the basis of the change in intensity against the concentration of [ZnB], stability constants were determined for [Eu(pta)₃Zn(saltn)], [Eu(pta)₃Zn{(^tBu)saltn}], and [Eu(pta)₃Zn(salchn)] as 4.13, 4.9 and 5.56, respectively (log , where =[[Eu(pta)₃ZnB]]([[Eu(pta)₃]][[ZnB]])^?1). The quantum yields of these binuclear complexes were determined as 0.15, 0.11, and 0.035, although [Eu(pta)₃Zn(salchn)] revealed the strongest luminescence at 613 nm. The results of X‐ray diffraction analysis for [Eu(pta)₃Zn(saltn)] showed that Zn^II had a coordination number of five and was bridged with Eu^III by three donor O‐atoms, i.e., two from the salicylidene moieties and one from the ketonato group pta.     

Dinuclear Ruthenium(II) Carbonyl Complexes Doubly Bridged by a Bromine Atom and a C5H3N-2-C(O)CH2-6-CH2 (Q) Group. Crystal Structures of Ru2(μ-Br)(μ-Q)Br(CO)4(PPh3)(MeOH) and Ru2(μ-Br)(μ-Q)Br(CO)3(PPh3)2

The oxidative addition reaction of 2,6-bis(bromomethyl)pyridine to Ru₃(CO)₁₂ gave scarcely soluble {Ru₂Br₂(-Q)(CO)₄} _n , 1, [Q=C₅H₃N-2-C(O)CH₂-6-CH₂] or a mixture of 1 and the mononuclear complex RuBr(Q)(CO)₃, 2, [Q=C₅H₃N-2-C(O)CH₂-6-CH₂Br] according to the reactant's mole ratio. Further reactions of 1 with some N- and P-donor ligands (L) afforded readily soluble dinuclear complexes, Ru₂(-Br)(-Q)Br(CO) _n (L) _m [n=4, m=1, L=PPh₃ 3a, or py 3b; n=3, m=2, L=PPh₃ 5a, or PPh₂(o-tolyl) 5b]. In this paper, the characterization of these products by the elemental analyses and the spectroscopic methods are described. The X-ray crystal structures of Ru₂(-Br) (-Q)Br(CO)₄(PPh₃)(MeOH), 4, which was obtained by crystallization of 3a from MeOH, and of 5a · (2CHCl ₃ ) are also described. Each of the metal atoms in 4 has a distorted octahedral coordination, while in 5a · (2CHCl ₃ ) one metal atom takes a distorted octahedral geometry and the other pseudooctahedral, which is completed by presenting a Ru ··· Br secondary bonding interaction.
