Summary Dilute suspensions of polyoxymethylene crystals inp-xylene have been shown to behave as Bingham Plastic Fluids. The crystals are very thin hexagonal platelets and low concentrations are sufficient to provide a continuous high-voidage matrix which requires the application of a finite stress before deformation occurs. The behaviour of the system has been characterised with respect to changes in shear rate, temperature and concentration of suspended polymer.
Zusammenfassung Es wurde gezeigt, daß sich verdünnte Lösungen von Polyoxymethylen-Kristallen in p-Xylol wie eine Bingham-Flüssigkeit verhalten. Die Kristalle sind sehr dünne hexagonale Plättchen. Niedrige Konzentrationen sind für eine beständige Matrix, die das Aufbringen einer endlichen Spannung erfordert, bevor eine Deformation auftritt, ausreichend. Das Verhalten dieses Systems wurde unter Berücksichtigung von Änderungen der Schergeschwindigkeit, der Temperatur und der Konzentration des suspendierten Polymers charakterisiert.

Abtract  Experiments were performed for individual realizations of the vortex shedding process behind a circular disk at Reynolds numbers of 103–105, at which periodic vortex shedding prevails in the wake. The phase differences regarding the individual vortex shedding structures detected at multiple circumferential locations in the wake were obtained by analyzing the hot-wire signals with a conditional-sampling scheme. The phase differences of vortex shedding detected at circumferential positions 90° apart show a wide scatter, but the anti-phase character is largely preserved in the individual vortex shedding process as detected at circumferential locations 180° apart. The randomness of phase differences involved in the vortex shedding process is noted to be essential in order to satisfy the axisymmetric property of the global flow. The steady flow of a viscous incompressible fluid at high Reynolds numbers near a body of revolution of finite length whose radius coincides in order of magnitude with the thickness of the boundary layer is considered. The structure of the boundary layer in the neighborhood of the rear end of the body is investigated on the assumption that it has a power-law shape with values of the exponent n 1/2. Thermal gravity convection in a horizontal layer of compressible perfect gas heated from below and a van der Waals gas near the critical state is investigated. The characteristics of the isentropic equilibrium of a compressible medium with a van der Waals equation of state are considered. The known conditions of convection onset in the perfect and van der Waals gases are checked on the basis of a solution of the complete and linearized equations. The restrictions imposed in deriving the known formulas for the adiabatic temperature gradients used in the conditions of absence and onset of convection are discussed. The characteristics of the convective heat transfer are examined, including the causes of the heat-transfer deterioration in the near-critical medium above the hydrostatic equilibrium threshold.  相似文献

Stability problems for cylindrical shells under various loading modes were considered in numerous papers. A detailed analysis of such problems can be found, e.g., in the monograph [1]. We refer to the solutions presented in this monograph as classical.For long cylindrical shells in axial compression, one of the buckling modes is the purely beam flexural mode similar to the classical buckling mode of a straight rod. It is well known that it can be studied by using the nonlinear or linearized equations of the membrane theory of shells. In [2], it was shown that, on the basis of such equations constructed starting from the noncontradictory version of geometrically nonlinear elasticity relations in the quadratic approximation [3], under the separate action of the axial compression, external pressure, and torsion, there are also previously unknown nonclassical buckling modes, most of which are shear ones.In the present paper, we show that the use of the above equations for cylindrical shells under compression and external pressure with simultaneous pure torsion or bending permits revealing the earlier unknown torsional, beam flexural, and beam torsional-flexural buckling modes, which are nonclassical, just as those found in [2]. The second of these buckling modes is realized when axially compressing forces are formed in the shell with simultaneous torsion, and the third of them is realized under compression combined with pure bending.It was found that, earlier than the classical buckling modes, the torsional buckling modes can be realized for relatively short shells with small shear rigidity in the tangent plane, while the second and third buckling modes can be realized for relatively long shells.  相似文献

The paper outlines a procedure to derive the canonical system of equations of the classical theory of thin shells using Reissner’s variational principle and partial variational principles. The Hamiltonian form of the Reissner functional is obtained using Lagrange multipliers to include the kinematical conditions that follow from the Kirchhoff-Love hypotheses. It is shown that the canonical system of equations can be represented in three different forms: one conventional form (five equilibrium equations) and two forms that are equivalent to it. This can be proved by reducing them to the same system of three equations. An experimental study is undertaken to examine the dynamic stress–strain characteristics of ligaments from the human cervical spine (neck). Tests were conducted using a tensile split Hopkinson bar device and the engineering strain rates imposed were of the order of 102∼103/s. As ligaments are extremely soft and pliable, specialized test protocols applicable to Hopkinson bar testing were developed to facilitate acquisition of reliable and accurate data. Seven primary ligaments types from the cervical spines of three male cadavers were subjected to mechanical tests. These yielded dynamic stress–strain curves which could be approximated by empirical equations. The dynamic failure stress/load, failure stain/deformation, modulus/stiffness, as well as energy absorption capacity, were obtained for the various ligaments and classified according to their location, the strain rate imposed and the cadaveric source. Compared with static responses, the overall average dynamic stress–strain behavior foreach type of ligament exhibited an elevation in strength but reduced elongation.  相似文献

A laboratory study including physical modeling of filtration processes in porous beds with similarity criteria satisfied is performed. Turbulent flow separation in over-expanded rocket nozzles is investigated experimentally in a sub-scale model nozzle fed with cold air and having a thrust-optimized contour. Depending upon the pressure ratio either a free shock separation (FSS) or a restricted shock separation (RSS) is observed with a significant hysteresis between these two flow regimes. It is shown that the RSS configuration may involve several separated regions. Analysis of wall pressure fluctuations give quantitative information on the fluctuating pressure field directly connected with the occurrence of significant side loads. Direct measurements of the evolution of the side loads with respect to the pressure ratio show the occurrence of three distinct peaks which are explained by the wall pressure fluctuations measurements.  相似文献
