Ultrasensitive polychromatic silver staining of sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels with the Gelcode system using the PhastSystem Development Unit

The Gelcode color-based silver staining system, an improved formulation based on the original publication by Sammons et al. (Electrophoresis 1981, 2, 141-147) has been adapted to automated rapid staining in the PhastSystem Development Unit. The use of elevated temperatures in the fixation, washing, staining, and stabilization steps of the protocol reduces the total time of the process from 18 h to 1 h. The limit of detection, which is at least tenfold more sensitive than the silver staining protocol recommended for the PhastSystem, corresponds to 0.05-0.1 ng of protein per band. The method is applicable to both one- and two-dimensional polyacrylamide gels.     

Vibrationally resolved photoelectron angular distributions for H2

The photoelectron asymmetry parameter, β, is reported for individual vibrational levels of H₂⁺(X²Σ_g⁺) formed by photoionization of H₂(X¹Σ_g⁺) at wavelengths of 736, 584, 461 and 304 Å. At 584 Å, β, exhibits a monotonic increase with vibrational quantum number (decreasing photoelectron kinetic energy) confirming the trend predicted by Itikawa.

About Perrhenates. 1. On LiReO₄ For the very first time anhydrous LiReO₄ was prepared in transparent, colourless single crystals from Li₂O₂ and Re₂O₇ (closed Au-pipe; 350°C; 14 d). The crystal structure, P1 , with a = 9.652(1), b = 8.455(1), c = 6.928(1) Å, α = 101,53° (1), β = 106.55° (1), γ = 97.22° (1), Z = 6, d_x = 4.92 g/cm³, d_pyk = 4,81 g/cm³ was solved (four-circle-diffractometer data PW 1100, 2151 I₀ (hkl), AgKα; R = 0.073, R_w = 0.076). There are three kinds of functionally different Li⁺. The Madelung Part of the Lattice Energy, MAPLE, was calculated.     

Die Schmelzdiagramme der Systeme CsN3/Zn(N3)2 und KN3/Zn(N3)2

The phase diagrams of the systems CsN₃/Zn(N₃)₂ and KN₃/Zn(N₃)₂ have been obtained employing the microscopic technique ofL. Kofler andA. Kofler. Within the system CsN₃/Zn(N₃)₂ three eutectics at 148°C, 142°C, and 210°C were found. Besides Cs₂Zn(N₃)₄, melting incongruently in the interval 153°C to 170°C, there exist two further compounds of the most probable composition Cs₃Zn₂(N₃)₇ and CsZn₂(N₃)₅, melting congruently at 170°C and 210°C, resp. In the system KN₃/Zn(N₃)₂ there exist two eutectics at 203°C and 172°C and two compounds, one of them, i.e. K₂Zn(N₃)₄, melting congruently at 206°C, the other one, with composition KZn₃(N₃)₇ or KZn₄(N₃)₉, melting incongruently at 210°C.

ULTRAVIOLET-ENHANCED REACTIVATION OF HERPES VIRUS IN HUMAN TUMOR CELLS

Abstract —Virus-host cell interactions may be investigated by study of the enhancement of infectivity of ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated virus obtained by UV-irradiating the host cell [ultraviolet reactivation (UVR)]. This phenomenon was studied with Herpes simplex virus and normal (embryonic lung) and malignant (HeLa) human cells. Although the lung cells displayed no UVR, both the HeLa cells and a Sendai-virus carrier culture of HeLa cells demonstrated UVR capabilities. This UVR persisted at equal or increased levels for at least 24 h. Since the lung cells and HeLa cells have similar host-cell-reactivation (HCR) abilities, the differences in UVR suggests that UVR and HCR may operate by different mechanisms.     

Sign ambiguity in dipole moment derivatives of Br2CO

Signs of the dipole moment derivatives, ?p_x/?S₄ and ?p_x/?S₅ where p_x is the dipole moment vector along an axis perpendicular to the CO bond in the plane of the molecule and S_j are the symmetry coordinates for the B₁ vibrations of Br₂CO have been re-evaluated from the reported ?p/?Q_i values (p being the dipole moment of the molecule and Q_i the normal coordinates) and the L matrix elements. The new set of dipole moment derivatives fits well with similar parameters for Cl₂CO and F₂CO.     

Evaluation of a carbon-rod atomizer for routine determination of trace metals by atomic-absorption spectroscopy applications to analysis of lubricating oil and crude oil

A carbon-rod atomizer (CRA) fitted with a 'mini-Massmann' carbon rod was evaluated for routine analysis of petroleum and petroleum products for trace metal content by atomic-absorption spectroscopy. Aspects investigated included sensitivity, detection limit, effect of solvent type, and interferences. The results of analysis of oil samples with this technique were compared with those obtained by other techniques. Metals studied were silver, copper, iron, nickel, and lead. Sensitivity and detection limit values obtained with the CRA were similar to those obtained with the carbon-filament atomizer. Strong 'solvent effects' were observed as well as interference by cations. On the basis of this study, design changes for the CRA are suggested, with the object of minimizing 'solvent effects' and interferences, increasing the atomization efficiency, and increasing the residence time of the atomic vapour in the optical path of the instrumental system.     

Electron-impact and thermal fragmentation patterns of some perfluoroalkylene-linked aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds

The pyrolysis of some perfluoroalkylene-linked aromatic and heteroaromatic polymer precursors and a poly(1,3-phenylenehexafluorotrimethylene) has been studied using a combined pyrolysis-gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric method. Whereas the electron-impact induced fragmentations of the polymer precursors are almost exclusively controlled by cleavage β to the aromatic or heteroaromatic ring, thermolysis of these compounds yields products whose formation is consistent with the occurrence of primary cleavage processes that are not confined β to the ring.     

Benzo[b] thiophene derivatives. XVIII. The sulfur isosteres of harmaline,harmine and related isomers

The sulfur analogs of harmaline, 7-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-1-methyl[1]benzothieno[2,3-c]-pyridine (Ib), harmine, 7-methoxy-1-methyl[1]benzothieno[2,3- c ]pyridine (IIb), and corresponding 6-methoxy isomers (Ic and IIc) have been synthesized for pharmacological evaluation as monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
