Novel liquid crystals based on [1]benzothieno[3,2- b ][1]benzothiophene

Four series of new [1]benzothieno[3,2- b ][1]benzothiophene derivatives have been synthesized. In the non-chiral series a SmA phase occurs, while the chiral series exhibits a rather wide antiferroelectric SmC * A phase just below the SmA phase. The SmA-SmC * A phase transition has been studied using DSC and dielectric spectroscopy. In the SmC * A phase the spontaneous quantities have been measured. The tilt angle shows a typical temperature dependence and the values of spontaneous polarization are rather moderate. The length of the helical pitch increases on increasing the length of the non-chiral alkyl chain.     

Intercalation of Dyes Containing SO3H Groups into Zn–Al Layered Double Hydroxide

The intercalates of Naphthol Yellow S, Tropaeolin 000, and Tropaeolin 00 were prepared by heating [Zn_0.67Al_0.33(OH)₂](CO₃)_0.165 · 0.5H₂O with acidic forms of the dye solutions in an open reaction vessel. The intercalates were characterized by chemical and thermal analysis, X-ray powder diffraction and UV–VIS spectroscopy. A possible arrangement of the dye molecules in the intercalates was suggested on the basis of their chemical compositions and interlayer distances, by taking into account van der Waals dimensions of the guest molecules and by assuming that the structure of the host layers is not changed during the intercalation process.     

Mass spectrometric determination of glycosylation sites and oligosaccharide composition of insect-expressed mouse interleukin-3

The primary structure of Baculovirus-expressed mouse interleukin-3 produced in infected Bombyx mori larvae was characterized by liquid secondary ion mass spectrometry and 252Cf-plasma desorption mass spectrometry in combination with selected protein microchemical reactions. Interleukin-3 was found to consist of at least two glycoprotein species of ca. 17,000 dalton. Characterization of tryptic and S. aureus V8 protease peptides by Edman degradation combined with plasma desorption mass spectrometry showed that two N-glycosylation sites. Asn-16 and Asn-86, were present. N-Glycan residues were shown by liquid secondary ion mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography to consist of mannose, fucose, and glucosamine. The presence of galactosamine indicated that O-glycosylated residues were present, in addition to the N-glycosylated residues. Glucose was also present, which indicated incomplete processing of the insect-expressed N-linked oligosaccharides.     

Hydrophobic interaction chromatography of proteins on Separon hema. I. The effect of an initial salt concentration on the separation of proteins

The influence of an initial salt concentration, phi(0), on the gradient separation of proteins using hydrophobic interaction chromatography on Separon HEMA 1000 was investigated. The results obtained were compared with the retention times and peak widths calculated according to a mathematical model.     

Heat capacity and heat content of BiNb<Subscript>5</Subscript>O<Subscript>14</Subscript>

The heat capacity and the heat content of bismuth niobate BiNb₅O₁₄ were measured by the relaxation time method, DSC and drop method, respectively. The temperature dependence of heat capacity in the form C _pm=455.84+0.06016T–7.7342·10⁶/T ² (J K^–1 mol^–1) was derived by the least squares method from the experimental data. Furthermore, the standard molar entropy at 298.15 K S _m=397.17 J K^–1 mol^–1 was derived from the low temperature heat capacity measurement.     

Hydrogenation of alkenes catalyzed by supported Ziegler catalysts

Supported Ziegler catalysts prepared by the reaction of a Ni(II) 1-butylsalicylaldiminate or Ni(II) 2-ethylhexanoate with Al₂O₃/SiO₂ treated with AlEt₃ or NaAlH₂ (OCH₂CH₂OCH₃)₂ are efficient catalysts for hydrogenation of simple alkenes. The factors influencing their activity are reported.

Identification and determination of phase II nabumetone metabolites by high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array and mass spectrometric detection

Chromatographic analyses play an important role in the identification and determination of phase I and phase II drug metabolites. While the chemical standards of phase I metabolites are usually available from commercial sources or by various synthetic, degradation or isolation methods, the phase II drug metabolites have usually more complicated structures, their standards are in general inaccessible and their identification and determination require a comprehensive analytical approach involving the use of xenobiochemical methods and the employment of hyphenated analytical techniques. In this work, various high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods were employed in the evaluation of xenobiochemical experiments leading to the identification and determination of phase II nabumetone metabolites. Optimal conditions for the quantitative enzymatic deconjugation of phase II metabolites were found for the samples of minipig bile, small intestine contents and urine. Comparative HPLC analyses of the samples of above-mentioned biomatrices and of the same biomatrices after their enzymatic treatment using beta-glucuronidase and arylsulfatase afforded the qualitative and quantitative information about phase II nabumetone metabolites. Hereby, three principal phase II nabumetone metabolites (ether glucuronides) were discovered in minipig's body fluids and their structures were confirmed using liquid chromatography (LC)-electrospray ionization mass spectrometric (MS) analyses.     

Haloacrylic acids XI. Photochemical reactions of aliphatic aldehydes with methyl trifluoroacrylate

Photochemically initiated reactions of aliphatic aldehydes, namely acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde and butyraldehyde, with methyl trifluoroacrylate afforded γ-ketoesters of the type R-CO-CF₂CHF-COOCH₃ in the liquid phase. In the gas phase reaction further products were formed by addition of the aldehyde fragments to the olefinic bond of the methyl trifluoroacrylate.
