Statistical mechanics of temporary polymer networks I. The equilibrium theory

In part I of this work (the present article) the equilibrium state of temporary polymer networks is treated in the framework of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. The network is described as an open system. Thereby we use a modified spring-bead model in which the beads represent junctions that decay and reform thus adding a viscous component to the assumed elastic behaviour of the permanent network. The relevant statistical equation — analogous to Liouville's equation — is solved. The grand-canonical probability density function and two of three equations of state are derived. Explicit formulae are given for several relevant probabilities. For instance the probabilityw (z)dz that a network chain connecting two junctions has a contour length betweenz andz +dz is given by the Wien type formulaw(z) =A z ³ exp {–B z} whereA andB do not depend onz.     

LiTaO3 as holographic storage material

The optical storage properties of LiTaO₃:Fe are investigated and compared with those of the isomorphous compound LiNbO₃:Fe. Absorption, photocurrent, photoconductivity and holographic measurements are reported. In the case of photovoltaic writing similar results for LiTaO₃- and LiNbO₃-crystals are obtained. However, in the case of photoconductive writing using external electric fields LiTaO₃:Fe-crystals yield much better results due to large photoconductivity values. Considering the recording sensitivity and the extremely large storage time LiTaO₃:Fe turns out to be one of the most promising materials for photorefractive storage of volume phase holograms.     

The job-shop problem and immediate selection

The job-shop problem is one of the most difficult NP-hard scheduling problems. A 10×10-problem published in 1963 has been solved only recently by Carlier and Pinson using a branch and bound method. Other branch and bound algorithms have been developed recently. The efficiency of all these branch and bound methods relies on the concept of immediate selection which allows to introduce order relations on the setI of all operations to be processed on the same machine before branching. We present new algorithms for immediate selection. Among them are

1. anO(max {n logn,f})-algorithm for fixing all disjunctions induced by cliques;
2. anO(n ²)-algorithm based on concepts which are different from those used by Carlier and Pinson.

Here,n is the number of operations inI andf is the number of induced order relations.     

Refractive index profiles of LiNbO3: Ti waveguides

Eight LiNbO₃: Ti waveguides have been fabricated under differing conditions. The effective refractive indices of guided modes have been measured and successfully fitted to Gaussian index profiles. The change of refractive index and titanium concentration are related by a power law, the exponents being different for the extraordinary and the ordinary beam.     

乙基苯胺的转动光谱及分子结构

本文使用傅里叶变换微波谱仪研究了乙基苯胺类物质(邻乙基苯胺,间乙基苯胺,对乙基苯胺)的分子结构. 由于此类分子含氮原子(I¹⁴N=1),因此跃迁谱线中都呈现出核四级裂分. 通过比较实验测定得到的分子结构,可总结苯胺环上不同位置乙基的取代对氨基及分子整体结构的影响.     

Neuronal expression of muskelin in the rodent central nervous system

Background  

The kelch repeat protein muskelin mediates cytoskeletal responses to the extracellular matrix protein thrombospondin 1, (TSP1), that is known to promote synaptogenesis in the central nervous system (CNS). Muskelin displays intracellular localization and affects cytoskeletal organization in adherent cells. Muskelin is expressed in adult brain and has been reported to bind the Cdk5 activator p39, which also facilitates the formation of functional synapses. Since little is known about muskelin in neuronal tissues, we here analysed the tissue distribution of muskelin in rodent brain and analysed its subcellular localization using cultured neurons from multiple life stages.     

Alpha decay of 109I and its implications for the proton decay of 105Sb and the astrophysical rapid proton-capture process

An alpha-decay branch of (1.4+/-0.4) x 10(-4) has been discovered in the decay of 109I, which predominantly decays via proton emission. The measured Q(alpha) value of 3918+/-21 keV allows the indirect determination of the Q value for proton emission from 105Sb of 356+/-22 keV, which is approximately of 130 keV more bound than previously reported. This result is relevant for the astrophysical rapid proton-capture process, which would terminate in the 105Sn(p,gamma)106Sb(p,gamma)107Te(alpha decay)103Sn cycle at the densities expected in explosive hydrogen burning scenarios, unless unusually strong pairing effects result in a 103Sn(p,gamma)104Sb(p,gamma)105Te(alpha decay)101Sn) cycle.     

Ein Beitrag zur radiometrischen Bestimmung des Ziehsteinverschleißes beim Ziehen von Stahldraht

Es wird ein zuvelässiges und sehr empfindliches radiometrisches Verfahren zur Bestimmung des Ziehsteinverschleiβes beim Ziehen von Stahldraht beschrieben. Im Vergleich zu den in der Literatur angegebenen radiometrischen Meβverfahren ist das behandelte Verfahren weniger zeitaufwending und gestattet es, bei einem vertretbaren Aufwand gröβere Verscuhsreihen durchzuführen. Mit Hilfe dieser Methode ist es möglich, langwierige groβtechnische Versuche zu umgehen und gleichzeitig eine wesentlich exaktere Aussage ūber den Verschleiβ unter verschiedenen Ziehbedingungen zu erhalten.
