Modulational instability of ion-acoustic-waves in two electron temperature plasmas

The envelope properties of ion-acoustic waves in a two-electron-temperature plasma are studied. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation describing the envelope of these waves is obtained from the plasma fluid equations by employing the Krylov-Bogoliubov-Mitropolsky perturbation method. It is shown that the ion-acoustic waves can be modulationally unstable or stable depending on the ratios of the densities and the temperatures of the hot and the cold electron components. Even a small fraction of the cold electron component can drastically affect the stability of the system.

High pressure phase transitions in organic solids I:α → β transition in resorcinol

An experimental program has been started to study polymorphic phase transitions under pressure in organic solids using the Be gasketing technique developed by us. This allows us to obtain x-ray diffraction patterns of low symmetry organic solids with high resolution, employing CuK _α radiation. The first organic solid studied is α-resorcinol. At 0.5 GPa, it transforms to its high temperature and denser modification, β-resorcinol. The transformation mechanism is discussed with the help of molecular packing calculations.     

Effect of dielectronic recombination excitation in the solar x-ray lines of calcium-ions

The effect of dielectronic recombination as an excitation process in the intensity of solar x-ray lines of calcium ions is investigated. It is found that x-ray line intensities are enhanced by 15% to 88% with the inclusion of dielectronic recombination as an excitation mechanism.     

Structural disorder model for amorphous semiconductor; Absorption edge in hydrogenated a-Si

The effect of structural disorder on the width of the Urbach edge E₀, the energy band gap E_G and dE_G/dT in hydrogenated a-Si has been analysed in terms of a simple structural disorder model and has been found to be in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data.
