Kinetics of gas-phase addition reactions of methyl radicals. I. Addition to ethylene,acetylene, and benzene

The reactions have been studied by a mass-balance method involving the photolysis of small amounts of biacetyl in the presence of a large excess of isobutane containing a small proportion of the unsaturated substrate. The following Arrhenius parameters have been derived:

Electron resonance linewidth anisotropy of CsMnCl3

The angular dependence of the EPR linewidth in the paramagnetic region for CsMnCl₃ is accurately represented by A(1+cos²θ) + B in accord with conventional exchange narrowing theory but the spin fluctuations in this material are not in the short correlation time limit.     

Factorization of factorials

If factorials enter into product-quotient expressions, not allowing approximative calculation, the factorization into powers of primes is recommended. The paper describes a computer program for this process, based on a known formula, which should be applied differently, according as the primes are large or small. A discussion shows how to distinguish between large and small in order to minimize the computing time.

The decomposition of methanol at low pressures by rhenium

A heated rhenium wire is an effective catalyst for the decomposition of methanol at low pressures, the mass-spectrometrically recorded products of decomposition being carbon monoxide and hydrogen. When newly cleaned, more than 30% of c led to decomposition, for filament temperatures between 900 and 1300 K. Under steady-state conditions, or when the filament was pre-saturated with oxygen, the temperature dependence of catalytic activity was significantly differe though the maximum efficiency was still as much as 20% at 900 K.
