Procedures for the enhancement of selectivity in liquid phase chemiluminescence detection

An overview of liquid phase chemiluminescence (CL) processes is presented and the potential for CL detection in liquid chromatography (LC) is discussed, with particular reference to the luminol and peroxyoxalate reactions. Post column ion displacement from a solid phase reagent [a cation exchange resin in the copper(II) form] followed by catalysis of the luminol reaction is used for the quantification of mixtures of weak acids after separation by ion-exclusion chromatography. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) released during the combustion of biomass fuels are separated by reversed-phase chromatography and quantified by their sensitizing effect on the peroxyoxalate reaction. This procedure is also used for the determination of carboxylic acids in non-aqueous media after selective pre-column derivatization with a fluorescent label (9-anthracenemethanol).     

The heats of reaction of phosphines and phosphites with toluene-molybdenum tricarbonyl. Importance of both steric and electronic factors in determining the Mo---PR3 bond strength

The heats of reaction of tolueneMo(CO)₃ with a series of phosphines and phosphites have been measured by solution calorimetry. The order of stability toward formation of fac-(PR₃)₃Mo(CO)₃ in THF solution is: P(OCH₃)₃s> PMe₃ > PⁿBu₃ > PMe₂Ph> PEt₃ > triphos> P(OPh)₃ > PMePh₂ > PPh₃ > PCl₃ and spans a range of 25 kcal/mol reflecting individual bond strength differences up to 8 kcal/mol. The bulky phosphines PCy₃ and P^tBu₃ react with tolueneMo(CO)₃ in THF, but 30–40 kcal/mol less heat is evolved in these reactions than with the other phosphines and phosphites. The coordinately unsaturated five-coordinate complexes (PR₃)₂Mo(CO)₃ are proposed as the reaction products. The importance of both steric and electronic factors in the Mo---P bond is discussed.     

Synthesis of the β-lactam antibiotic (+)- thienamycin via an intermediate π-allyltricarbonyliron lactone complex

The π-allyltricarbonyliron lactone complex (7), formed by reaction of E-1,2-epoxy-2-methyl-6,6-dimethoxyhex-3-ene(5) with co-ordinatively unsaturated iron carbonyl species, was reacted with benzylamine to give a lactam complex (8) by an S_N'-like mechanism. This complex upon oxidation with Ce(IV) afforded cis-3-isopropenyl-4-[(2',2'-dim (9) which was chemically modified into trans-3-(1'-hydroxyethyl)-4-[(2',2-dimethoxy)ethyl] azetidin-2-one (13), a key intermediate previously used in the synthesis of the antibiotic thienamycin. Similar reaction with (S)-(-)--methylbenzylamine afforded a separable mixture of diastereoisomeric iron lactam complexes (16 and 17). These complexes could be individually converted to the corresponding optically active β-lactam derivatives (27 and 28) and, hence, are precursors for the synthesis of either natural (+)-thienamycin or unnatural (-)-thienamycin.     

Wittig and horner-wittig coupling reactions of 2-substituted cyclic ethers and their application to spiroketal synthesis

Wittig and Horner-Wittig coupling reactions of tetrahydropyran or tetrahydrofuran 2-triphenylphosphonium salts or 2-diphenylphosphine oxides with aldehydes and lactols affords good yields of the corresponding enol ethers. In selected examples these enol ether products may be further converted to spiroketals some of which are natural pheromones derived from $\text{Dacus oleae}$ and $\text{Paravespula vulgaris}$.     

Relative diels-alder reactivity of 3-alkyl-2-(3-butenyl)-1,2-dihydropyridines. : Interplay of electronic and steric factors related to the 3-alkyl group.

Steric effects have been found to predominate over Frontier Molecular Orbital (FMO) effects in controlling the relative rates of intramolecular cycloadditions of 3-R-substituted- 2-(3-butenyl)1,2-dihydropyridines (DHP) in the series $\text{4a–c}$ (R = H, Me, Et).     

Furans in Synthesis. The Preparation of Spiro-Cyclic Systems.

Furan-terminated cationic cyclizations allylic alcohols, enones, and N-acyl iminium ions as initiators have been explored as routes to highly functionalized spiro[4,5]decanes, spiro[5,5]undecanes, spiro[4,6]undecanes, and spiro[5,6]dodecanes.     

Ionophore synthesis. An enantioselective route to the left-wing of indanomycin (X- 14547A).

An enantioselective synthesis of the tetrahydropyran “left-wing” ofthe ionophore X-14547A is described, wherein stereoselective 1,2-carbonyl additions and an oxapyronone-to-dihydropyran enolate Claisen rearrangement are key stereocontrol elements.     

Comparison of mass resolution criteria in mass spectrometry

For a single peak, mass spectral resolution can be expressed in terms of peak width or ratio of peak position to peak width. Alternatively, for two equally intense peaks of equal width, resolution can be defined as the minimum peak separation such that the height of the valley between the combined peaks is less than a specified ratio (1%, 10%, 50%, 100%) of the individual (or combined) peak maximum. All these definitions depend on peak shape. Conversion formulae between various mass resolution criteria are presented for each of eight spectral peak shapes: Gaussian, triangular, trapezoidal, Lorentzian (absorption-mode, magnitude-mode, and sine-apodized magnitude-mode), and sinc (absorption-mode and magnitude-mode). From these formulae, mass resolutions based upon different criteria are readily compared for the same or different line shapes.     

Synthesis, characterisation and in vitro anti-angiogenic potential of dendron VEGF blockers

To overcome the lack of in vivo stability of certain peptides used in cancer treatment and to increase their retention time in the extracellular matrix of the target tissue, the anti-angiogenic WHLPFKC sequence is synthesised at the uppermost branching generation of a poly(ε-lysine) dendron. The root of these dendrons is designed to interact preferentially with macromolecules of the extracellular matrix, whilst the uppermost branching generation of the dendron increased the exposed density of the bioactive peptide. Bioactivity testing of the blockers is performed on HUVECs. The results show that the dendron tethered with VEGF blockers was still able to inhibit proliferation and angiogenesis. Their relatively larger structure did not prevent the interaction with VEGF.     

Solution structure of copper-seamed C-alkylpyrogallol[4]arene nanocapsules with varying chain lengths

The stability of copper-seamed C-alkylpyrogallol[4]arene hexamers with varying chain lengths in solution has been studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The progression in diameter of spherical capsules with increasing alkyl chain lengths of copper-seamed hexamers in solution suggests both robustness as well as a close correlation between the solid phase and solution phase structures.
