Kinetic studies in various media on some hydrogenation reactions catalyzed by polymer-anchored RhCl(PPh3)3

A study has been made of the hydrogenation of cyclohexene, 1-hexene and styrene at atmospheric pressure catalysed by RhCl (PPh₃)₃ supported on styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers with 1%, 2% and 4% cross linking. The dependence of the hydrogenation rate on the concentration of the olefin, the amount of catalyst, and the nature of the solvent was investigated. The hydrogenation rate is lower than for homogeneous catalysis but the dependence of the rate on the examined parameters is similar. The ratio between the rates for 1-hexene and cyclohexene is higher than that in the homogeneous phase. This increase in selectivity may due to steric hindrance around the active sites of the resin. The solvent effects revealed that the hydrogenation rate also depends on the degree of swelling of the resin.     

Some spectrofluorimetric applications of the cerium(IV)-cerium(III) system

Cerium(III) ions in dilute sulphuric acid medium exhibit a characteristic fluorescence which has its excitation maximum at 260 nm and its fluorescence emission maximum at 350 nm. By utilising the osmium-catalysed redox reaction between cerium(IV) and arsenic(III), microgram amounts of arsenic (7.5–37.5 μg) may be determined by spectrofluorimetric measurement of the ceriurm(III) produced. The principle may be applied to the determination of several other ions which cannot yet be determined by direct spectrofluorimetry, e.g.. Fe(II) (5.6–28 μg), oxalate (8.8–44μg). Osmium(VIII) (0.05–0.2 μg) and iodide (0.6–2.5 μg) may be determined by their catalytic action.     

Electrolytic methoxylation of 3,4-bis(hydroxymethyl) furan and synthesis of 4,5-bis-(hydroxymethyl) pyridazine

3,4-Bis(hydroxymethyl)furan was electrolytically methoxylated during intense cooling. 4,5-Bis(hydroxymethyl)pyridazine was obtained by reaction of the methoxylation product — 2,5-dimethoxy-3,4-bis (hydroxymethyl)-2,5-dihydrofuran — with hydrazine hydrate.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 10, pp. 1306–1307, October, 1970.     

Intracavity laser polarization spectrometer for biomolecule traces

A polarization variant of an intracavity laser spectrometer based on the competition of beams in an argon ion laser, radiating a number of narrow lines in the 275 to 529 nm spectral range, is proposed and described for the spectral analysis of liquid samples, having broad absorption bands, mainly biomolecules in solutions. By careful optimization of the operating conditions, a procedure has been established that results in a minimal measurable absorbance decreased up to 10(-5) units of optical density. The examined spectrometer provides a wide dynamic range of analysis. A determination of trace contents of amino acids in methanol were carried out.
