Acid-degradable solid-walled microcapsules for pH-responsive burst-release drug delivery

Acid-degradable microcapsules were prepared via an interfacial polymerization. Degradation of the thin wall of the capsules leads to all-or-nothing cargo release. The only byproducts of degradation are acetone, and a non-toxic triamide. Proof-of-concept experiments showed that cargo can be delivered to and released in cells.     

Recent developments in the total synthesis of fungicidal natural products--a crop protection perspective

Natural products play an important role as lead structures for the identification of novel active ingredients in crop protection. As it is the case in the pharmaceutical industry, however, many crop protection companies have substantially decreased their in-house efforts in natural product exploration. Therefore, joint projects with academic research groups become more and more important in the field. This review describes several examples for successful collaborations in the field of fungicidal natural products.     

A highly porous flexible Metal-Organic Framework with corundum topology

A flexible Metal-Organic Framework Zn(4)O(BenzTB)(3/2) (DUT-13) was obtained by combination of a tetratopic linker and Zn(4)O(6+) as connector. The material has a corundum topology and shows the highest pore volume among flexible MOFs.     

Development of highly potent inhibitors of the ras-targeting human acyl protein thioesterases based on substrate similarity design

A matter of common sense: A common recognition motif consisting of a negatively charged group five to six bonds away (red) from the (thio)ester functionality (green) and a positively charged tail group ten to twelve bonds away (blue) was identified in two native acyl protein thioesterase?1 (APT1) substrates. This similarity led to the design of potent inhibitors of the Ras-depalmitoylating enzyme APT1.     

Steric crowding can stabilize a labile molecule: solving the hexaphenylethane riddle

12 not so angry men: Hexaphenylethane is unstable, a phenomenon traditionally attributed to steric repulsion between the six phenyl rings. However, adding 12 bulky tert-butyl groups, one to each of the 12 meta positions, gives a stabile ethane derivative (see space-filling model and potential energy curve for the dissociation of the central C-C bond). This unexpected stabilization is shown to result from attractive dispersion interactions between the substituents.     

Pd-N to Pd-O rearrangement for a carbamate synthesis from carbon dioxide and methane: a density functional and ab initio molecular dynamics metadynamics study

We investigated the key step of Pd-N to Pd-O rearrangement from a model catalytic cycle for the activation of carbon dioxide and methane with static quantum chemical calculations and metadynamics simulation. Our calculations show that different bottlenecks appear in the catalytic cycle but that the investigated rearrangement of the Pd-N to Pd-O bounded complex has a barrier ΔG(#)/ΔF(#) of approximately 20 kJ mol?1 and is therefore accessible at ambient reaction conditions.
