Strong optical field study of a single self-assembled quantum dot

We review the investigation of a single quantum dot driven by a strong optical field. By coherent pump-probe spectroscopy, we demonstrate the Autler–Townes splitting and Mollow absorption spectrum in a single neutral quantum dot. Furthermore, we also show the typical Mollow absorption spectrum by driving a singly charged quantum dot in a strong optical coupling regime. Our results show all the typical features of an isolated atomic system driven by a strong optical field, such as the AC stark effect, Rabi side bands and optical gain effect, which indicate that both neutral and charged quantum dots maintain the discrete energy level states even at high optical field strengths.     

Persistent narrowing of nuclear-spin fluctuations in InAs quantum dots using laser excitation

We demonstrate the suppression of nuclear-spin fluctuations in an InAs quantum dot and measure the timescales of the spin narrowing effect. By initializing for tens of milliseconds with two continuous wave diode lasers, fluctuations of the nuclear spins are suppressed via the hole-assisted dynamic nuclear polarization feedback mechanism. The fluctuation narrowed state persists in the dark (absent light illumination) for well over 1 s even in the presence of a varying electron charge and spin polarization. Enhancement of the electron spin coherence time (T2*) is directly measured using coherent dark state spectroscopy. By separating the calming of the nuclear spins in time from the spin qubit operations, this method is much simpler than the spin echo coherence recovery or dynamic decoupling schemes.     

Orbital control of stereochemistry in acid-catalysed addition reactions of endo -tricyclo[3.2.1.02,4]0ct-6-ene

The reaction of endo-tricyclo[3.2.1.0^2,4]oct-6-ene 1 with methanol in the presence of catalytic amounts of toluene-p-sulphonic acid has been shown to give 2-exo- and endo-methoxybicyclo[3.2.1]oct-3-ene (2c) and (2d) and 2-endo-methoxybicyclo[3.2.1]oct-6-ene (13). The formation of 2-exo- methoxybicyclo[3.2.1]oct-3-ene (2c), the major product of reaction, has been probed by deuterium labelling experiments and a series of 6-exo-7-exo- dideuterobicyclo[3.2.1]oct-3-enes synthesised for ²H, ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectral analysis in order unambiguously to determine the stereochemistry of proton attack on endo-tricyclo[3.2.1 0^2,4]oct-6-ene (1). The formation of 2-exo-methoxybicyclo[3.2.1]oct-3-ene (2c) has been determined to involve corner protonation of the cyclopropyl moiety and skeletal rearrangement to an allylic cation with a small but measurable memory effect     

Phylogenetic Diversity Over an Abelian Group

There is a natural way to associate to any tree T with leaf set X, and with edges weighted by elements from an abelian group G, a map from the power set of X into G—simply add the elements on the edges that connect the leaves in that subset. This map has been well-studied in the case where G has no elements of order 2 (particularly when G is the additive group of real numbers) and, for this setting, subsets of leaves of size two play a crucial role. However, the existence and uniqueness results in that setting do not extend to arbitrary abelian groups. We study this more general problem here, and by working instead with both, pairs and triples of leaves, we obtain analogous existence and uniqueness results. Some particular results for elementary abelian 2-groups are also described. Received July 13, 2005

Stereoselective routes to 3-hydroxy and 3,4-dihydroxy derivatives of 2-aminocyclohexanecarboxylic acid

The Diels-Alder adduct of ethyl (E)-3-nitroacrylate and furan provides a versatile template for the stereoselective synthesis of mono and dihydroxylated derivatives of 2-aminocyclohexanecarboxylic acid (ACHC). The hydroxylated ACHC derivatives can be considered to be useful building blocks for β-peptides.     

Asymmetric synthesis of the putative structure of (-)-oryzoxymycin

[reaction: see text] A short asymmetric synthesis of (2'S,5R,6R)-2'-[6-amino-5-hydroxy-1,3-cyclohexadiene-1-carbonyloxy]propionic acid, the enantiomer of the reported structure of (+)-oryzoxymycin is described. The reported spectral data does not match that obtained for synthetic "oryzoxymycin".
