Bounds on the cardinalities of families of nearly neighborly quadrilaterals

We show nearly neighborly families of nine quadrilaterals and conjecture that this is the maximum. Using techniques developed by J. Zaks for nearly neighborly tetrahedra, we show that a nearly neighborly family of quadrilaterals has at most 14 members. A nearly neighborly family of quadrilaterals is said to share a base line if all nearly neighborly quadrilaterals lie on the same side of the line and the line contains a side of each. These families form an important special case. We show that there are 35 inequivalent examples of nearly neighborly families of four quadrilaterals on a base line, but that it is impossible to have a family of five nearly neighborly quadrilaterals on a base line.This work was supported in part by the University of Illinois Research Board, UIUC, Urbana, IL.     

New data on the ternary fission of 252Cf from the Gammasphere facility

Ternary fission of ²⁵²Cf was studied at Gammasphere using eight ΔE×E particle telescopes. Helium, beryllium, boron, and carbon light charged particles (LCPs) emitted with kinetic energy more than 9, 21, 26, and 32 MeV, respectively, were identified. The 3368-keV γ transition from the first 2⁺ excited state in ¹⁰Be was found and the population probability ratio N(2⁺)/N(0⁺) = 0.160 ± 0.025 was estimated. No evidence was found for 3368-keV γ rays emitted from a triple molecular state. For the first time, charge distributions are obtained for ternary fission fragments emitted with helium, beryllium, and carbon LCPs.

On essential extensions of reduced rings and domains

A ring is said to be a left essential extension of a reduced ring (domain) if it contains a left ideal which is a reduced ring (domain) and intersects nontrivially every nonzero twosided ideal of the ring. We prove that every ring which is a left essential extension of a reduced ring is a subdirect sum of rings which are essential extensions of domains, but the converse implication does not hold. We give some applications of this result and discuss several related questions.Received: 6 January 2003     

An Interval-Parameter Fuzzy Approach for Multiobjective Linear Programming Under Uncertainty

An interval-parameter fuzzy linear programming method (IFMOLP) is proposed in this study for multiple objective decision-making under uncertainty. As a hybrid of interval-parameter and fuzzy methodologies, the IFMOLP incorporates interval-parameter linear programming and fuzzy multiobjective programming approaches to form an integrated optimization system. The method inherits advantages of interval-parameter programming, and allows uncertainties and decision-makers’ aspirations to be effectively communicated into its programming processes and resulting solutions. Membership functions for both objectives and constraints are formulated to reflect uncertainties in different system components and their interrelationships. An interactive solution procedure has been developed based on solution approaches of the interval-parameter and fuzzy programming techniques, plus necessary measures for handling the multiobjective feature. A didactic example is provided in the paper to illustrate the detailed solution process. Possibilities of further improvements by seeking Pareto optimum and incorporating flexible preference within constraints are also discussed.
