The reactions of substituted thiosemicarbazides and γ-halobutyrophenones afforded derivatives of the tetrahydro-1H-pyrrolo[1,2-b][1,2,4]triazole-2(3H)-thione ring system.     

Synthesis and facile end‐group quantification of functionalized PEG azides

Azido‐functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) derivatives are finding ever‐increasing applications in the areas of conjugation chemistry and targeted drug delivery by their judicious incorporation into nanoparticle‐forming polymeric systems. Quantification of azide incorporation into such PEG polymers is essential to their effective use. ¹H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) analysis offers the simplest approach; however, the relevant adjacent azide‐bearing methylene protons are often obscured by the PEG manifold signals. This study describes the synthesis of 1,2,3‐triazole adducts from their corresponding PEG azides via a convenient, mild click reaction, which facilitates straightforward NMR‐based quantitative end‐group analysis.This method was found to be compatible with many examples of bifunctional azido PEGs with molecular weights ranging from 2 to 18 kDa bearing a variety of functional groups. © 2016 The Authors. Subpicosecond electro-optic measurement of relativistic electron pulses

Time-resolved measurements of the transverse electric field associated with relativistic electron bunches are presented. Using an ultrafast electro-optic sensor close to the electron beam, the longitudinal profile of the electric field was measured with subpicosecond time resolution and without time-reversal ambiguity. Results are shown for two cases: inside the vacuum beam line in the presence of wake fields, and in air behind a beryllium window, effectively probing the near-field transition radiation. Especially in the latter case, reconstruction of the longitudinal electron bunch shape is straightforward.     

Strain energy density approach to stable crack extension under net section yielding of aircraft fuselage

In this paper, the incremental theory of plasticity is used in conjunction with the strain energy density criterion to determine the stress field in 4-in. wide test specimens containing 3 holes. These specimens, made from 0.04-in. thick sheets of 2024-T3 aluminum, also contained small collinear cracks emanating from the holes. The initial crack sizes varied from 0.15 to 0.26 in. Residual strength tests conducted with these specimens revealed that stable tearing occurred before failure. Analyses were performed to predict the stable crack extension and failure by plastic collapsed. Because of the complexities involved with nonlinear stress analysis combined with subcritical crack extension, the finite element method was used with the grid pattern adjusted for each increment of stable tearing. Reasonable correlation between the experimental data and predicted results was achieved.     

The reaction of 4-alkyl-3-thiosemicarbazides with β-haloketones

The reactions of 4-alkyl-3-thiosemicarbazides with β-halophenones and o-halophenones gave 4,5-dihydro-N-alkyl-3-phenyl-1H-pyrazole-1-carbothioaraides and 3-phenyl-1H-indazoles, respectively.
