On the theory of the shear-induced isotropic-to-nematic phase transition of side chain liquid-crystalline polymers

The shear-induced isotropic-to-nematic phase transition of side chain liquid-crystalline polymers is studied theoretically. A modification of the previous models of main-chain liquid crystals to the case of side chain liquid-crystalline polymers is proposed. Orientational and rheological properties of the model are studied in plane-shear flow. Predictions of the present model agree qualitatively with experimental results (Pujolle-Robic, Noirez in Nature 409:167, 2001).

Stereoselektive Synthesen von Taxan-Derivaten

Stereoselective Synthesis of Taxane Derivatives Substituted racemic 4,8,12-trinortaxanes were prepared stereoselectively in several steps from the dienone 10 . A variant of the de Mayo reaction with bicyclononenones 4 and cyclohexen produced the desired configuration at C(8) of the taxane framework. Retro-aldol cleavage of the tetracycle 5 led to the taxane skeleton 6 . Stereoselective reduction followed by treatment with base afforded 7b . Hydrolysis of the acetal group and further reduction yielded 9 in which the relative configuration corresponds to the one of the natural products.     

Mean-field pairing theory for the charge-stripe phase of high-temperature cuprate superconductors

Striped high-T(c) superconductors such as La(2-y-x)Nd(y)Sr(x)CuO(4) and La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) near x = 1/8 show a fascinating competition between spin and charge order and superconductivity. A theory for these systems therefore has to capture both the spin correlations of an antiferromagnet and the pair correlations of a superconductor. For this purpose we present here an effective Hartree-Fock theory incorporating both electron pairing with finite center-of-mass momentum and antiferromagnetism. We show that this theory reproduces the key experimental features such as the formation of the antiferromagnetic stripe patterns at 7/8 band filling or the quasi-one-dimensional electronic structure observed by photoemission spectroscopy.     

Low-field one-dimensional and direction-dependent relaxation imaging of bovine articular cartilage

The structure of articular cartilage is separated into three layers of differently oriented collagen fibers, which is accompanied by a gradient of increasing glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and decreasing water concentration from the top layer towards the bone interface. The combined effect of these structural variations results in a change of the longitudinal and transverse relaxation times as a function of the distance from the cartilage surface. In this paper, this dependence is investigated at a magnetic field strength of 0.27 T with a one-dimensional depth resolution of 50 μm on bovine hip and stifle joint articular cartilage. By employing this method, advantage is taken of the increasing contrast of the longitudinal relaxation rate found at lower magnetic field strengths. Furthermore, evidence for an orientational dependence of relaxation times with respect to an axis normal to the surface plane is given, an observation that has recently been reported using high-field MRI and that was explained by preferential orientations of collagen bundles in each of the three cartilage zones. In order to quantify the extent of a further contrast mechanism and to estimate spatially dependent glycosaminoglycan concentrations, the data are supplemented by proton relaxation times that were acquired in bovine articular cartilage that was soaked in a 0.8 mM aqueous Gd++ solution.
