Catalytic enantioselective synthesis of atropisomeric 2-aryl-4-quinolinone derivatives with an N–C chiral axis

In the presence of an (R)-MOP-Pd₂(dba)₃ catalyst, the reaction of ortho-tert-butylaniline with 2-bromophenyl arylethynyl ketone proceeded via a tandem amination (1,4-addition of aniline to an ynone and subsequent intramolecular Buchwald–Hartwig amination) to afford axially chiral N-(2-tert-butylphenyl)-2-aryl-4-quinolinone derivatives with moderate enantioselectivity (up to 72% ee).     

Controlled assembly of silica microspheres in spherically confined polymer particles by using self-organized precipitation (SORP) method

Assembly of submicron-sized microspheres has received much attention due to its high potential for wide variety of applications. We have developed a preparation method of polymer particles by simple mixing of a poor solvent into the polymer solution followed by evaporation of a good solvent. By using this technique, silica nanoparticles and polymer composite particles were prepared. Preparation of three-dimensional assemblies of silica particles in polymer particles and composite Janus particles are shown.     

On the classification of weighing matrices and self‐orthogonal codes

We provide a classification method of weighing matrices based on a classification of self‐orthogonal codes. Using this method, we classify weighing matrices of orders up to 15 and order 17, by revising some known classification. In addition, we give a revised classification of weighing matrices of weight 5. A revised classification of ternary maximal self‐orthogonal codes of lengths 18 and 19 is also presented. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Combin Designs 20:40–57, 2012     

Enhancement of Acid‐Catalyzed Esterification by the Addition of Base

General acid‐catalyzed reaction can be enhanced by the addition of base. Self‐catalyzed esterification of benzoic acid and octan‐1‐ol was enhanced by the addition of certain base such as imidazole. The rate of the esterification was accelerated as the concentration of imidazole increased. Trans‐esterification of 4‐nitrophenyl acetate was promoted in chloroform by the mixture of benzoic acid and imidazole, but not by benzoic acid or imidazole alone.     

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Liquid Crystalline Epoxy Resin with Low Melting Point

A liquid crystalline epoxy resin (LCE) having α-methylstilbene as a mesogenic unit and an ethylene-oxy unit as a spacer (DGE(C2-MS-C2)) was synthesized and characterized. DGE (C2-MS-C2) has a lower melting point (MP) compared to the diglycidylether of 4,4′-dihydroxy-α-methylstilbene (DGEDHMS). The curing of DGE (C2-MS-C2) with diaminodiphenylethane (DDEt) in a mesophase generated a liquid crystalline (LC) network, which have a more highly layered structure than DGEDHMS. The LC network showed extensively large fracture energy on a tensile test. Introducing spacers outside the mesogen unit promotes the mesogen unit to form a highly ordered structure, which enhances the versatility of LC epoxy resins.     

Construction of binary LCD codes,ternary LCD codes and quaternary Hermitian LCD codes

We give two methods for constructing many linear complementary dual (LCD for short) codes from a given LCD code, by modifying some known methods for constructing self-dual codes. Using the methods, we construct binary LCD codes and quaternary Hermitian LCD codes, which improve the previously known lower bounds on the largest minimum weights.

     

1,2-Dihydro-1-hydroxy-2,3,1-benzodiazaborine Bearing an Acridine Moiety as a Circular Dichroism Probe for Determination of Absolute Configuration of Mono-Alcohols

A new chiral probe molecule for mono-alcohols is developed by using 1,2-dihydro-1-hydroxy-2,3,1-benzodiazaborine (DAB) bearing an acridine moiety 1 . In the presence of mono-alcohols, DAB 1 forms borate 2 by boronic ester formation, followed by coordination of the acridine moiety to the boron atom. Borate 2 has a chiral center on the boron atom and works as a stereodynamic circular dichroism (CD) probe molecule for chiral mono-alcohols based on the π–π interaction between the acridine moiety and the carbon–carbon unsaturated moiety on mono-alcohols.     

One-Pot Synthesis of Enantioenriched β-Amino Secondary Amides via an Enantioselective [4+2] Cycloaddition Reaction of Vinyl Azides with N-Acyl Imines Catalyzed by a Chiral Brønsted Acid

A catalytic enantioselective synthesis of β-amino secondary amides was achieved using vinyl azides as the enamine-type nucleophile and chiral N-Tf phosphoramide as the chiral Brønsted acid catalyst through a five-step sequential transformation in one pot. The established sequential transformation involves an enantioselective [4+2] cycloaddition reaction of vinyl azides with N-acyl imines as the key stereo-determining step that is efficiently accelerated by a chiral N-Tf phosphoramide catalyst in a highly enantioselective manner in most cases. Further generation of the iminodiazonium ion intermediate through ring opening of the cycloaddition product and subsequent skeletal rearrangement involving Schmidt-type 1,2-aryl group migration followed by recyclization of the resulting nitrilium ion were also initiated by the same acid catalyst. Final acid hydrolysis of the recyclized products in the same pot gave rise to enantioenriched β-amino amides through C−C bond formation at the α-position of the secondary amides.
