Simple and accurate measurement of the absorption coefficient of an absorbing plate by use of the Brewster angle

We propose a simple and accurate method for measuring the refractive index and the absorption coefficient of an absorbing parallel plate. The method is essentially based on transmittance measurement with minimum reflectance at the Brewster angle for p-polarized light, which enables us to measure a low absorption loss of the order of 0.1 dB/cm for a typical plate thickness of 1 mm. The error that is due to the approximation used is practically negligible, and the accuracy of measured results depends mainly on the variations in the flatness and parallelism of the two surfaces of the sample and on instrumental errors.     

Laser-driven metal exchange and preparation of metal phthalocyanine

Two types of laser-driven dry processes for the preparation of metal phthalocyanine are reported. In the first one, laser-driven metal exchange, the excimer laser beam was focused on a copper target, and ablated copper atoms were injected onto a thin film of dilithium phthalocyanine (Li₂Pc). The central metal atoms of Li₂Pc were partially exchanged by copper atoms, and the blue thin film of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) was obtained after removal of the residual Li₂Pc by the hydrochloric acid treatment. In the second one, direct synthesis using the component organic molecule, CuPc was prepared by the implantation of laser-ablated copper atoms onto a thin film of 1,3-diiminoisoindoline (D I I I).     

Photocycloaddition of Quinoxaline-2(1H)-thiones to Alkenes

A synthetically useful C? C bond formation involving the photochemical addition of quinoxaline-2(1H)-thiones to alkenes is described. Irradiation of the quinoxaline-2(1H)-thiones 1–4 in the presence of the alkenes 7 gave the 2-(2′-mercaptoalkyl)quinoxalines 8–11 in moderate-to-good yields via ring cleavage of an intermediate aminothietane with aromatization of the quinoxaline ring. The latter was formed by [2+2] photocycloaddition of the C?S bond of the quinoxaline-2(1H)-thione and the C?C bond of the alkene.     

Reduction of tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins in involuted thymuses of stressed rats: a study using immunological methods

In the present study, we investigated whether tyrosine phosphorylation was involved in thymic involution, which has been reported to correlate well with the effects of various kinds of stresses. Immunohistochemistry using the anti-phosphotyrosine antibody showed that the immunoreactivity decreased remarkably in the involuted thymus of stressed rats as compared with the control thymus. Immunoblot analysis using the anti-phosphotyrosine antibody revealed the tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins with apparent molecular masses of 120, 90, and 70 kDa on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were detected in the control thymus. The immunoreactive band corresponding to the three proteins decreased remarkably in the involuted thymus. Further, we found by immunoprecipitation experiments that the 120 kDa protein was p130cas, a crk-associated src substrate. These findings suggest that tyrosine phosphorylation signaling may be involved in thymic involution.     

Reduction of Indolin-2-ones and Desulfurization of Indoline-2-thiones to Indoline and Indole Derivatives

Reduction of indolin-2-ones with lithium aluminium hydride (LAH) or diisobutylaluminum hydride (DIBAL) and desulfurization of indoline-2-thiones with Raney-Ni were investigated. Treatment of indoline-2-ones 1 with LAH or DIBAL yield indoles 4 and/or indolines 3 in moderate-to high yield depending on the substituents at N and C(3) of 1 . Indoline-2-thiones 2 were desulfurized with Raney-Ni to give indoles 4 and/or indolines 3 .     

[4+2] Cycloaddition of 2(1H)-pyrazinones and 1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-diones

The reaction of 2(1H)-pyrazinones 1 and 1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-diones 3 was investigated by comparing that of 1 with singlet oxygen. 2(1H)-Pyrazinones 1 reacted in Diels-Alder fashion with 1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-diones 3 to afford [4+2]-adducts 4–17 in high yields.     

Photochemical reactions of 1-methyl-4,6-diaryl-2(1H)-pyrimidinones in the presence of thiols

Photochemical reactions of 1-methyl-4,6-diaryl-2(1H)pyrimidinones 1a-b in the presence of thiols 2 are described. Irradiation of 1-methyl-4,6-diaryl-2(1H)-pyrimidinones 1a-b in benzene in the presence of thiols 2 gave the unexpected 2:1-adducts, 3-methyl-4,6-diaryl-5-aralkylthio-6-(1′-methyl-4′,6′-diaryldihydro-pyrimidin-2-on)yl-1,3-diazabicyclo[2.2.0]hexan-2-ones 3-6, of 1 and 2, whereas irradiation of 1a-b alone in benzene resulted in recovery of the unchanged 1a-b.
