5-Fluorouracil derivatives. XX. Synthesis and antitumor activity of 5'-O-unsaturated acyl-5-fluorouridines

Various kinds of 5'-O-unsaturated acyl 5-fluorouridines were synthesized to obtain 5-fluorouridine derivatives with low toxicity and high antitumor activity. Antitumor activity of the compounds against L-1210 leukemia in mice was examined, and the 5'-O-4-pentenoyl derivative showed the highest antitumor activity.     

Large-scale separation of metallic and semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes

In the applications of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), it is extremely important to separate semiconducting and metallic SWNTs. Although several methods have been reported for the separation, only low yields have been achieved at great expense. We show a separation method involving a dispersion-centrifugation process in a tetrahydrofuran solution of amine, which makes metallic SWNTs highly concentrated to 87% in a simple way.     

Electro-optic response of cubic liquid crystal compounds in Kerr cell geometry

We present the results of our investigations on the electro-optic response of the cubic phase liquid crystal compounds 1,2-bis-[4-n-octyloxy-benzoyl]-hydrazine (BABH8) and 4'-n-hexadecyloxy-3'-nitrobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (ANBC16) in Kerr cell geometry. The AC electric field response in the BABH8 cubic phase was found to be as small as that of the isotropic phase, even though there was a response in the adjacent smectic C (SmC) phase. The response in the SmC phase means that the BABH8 molecule itself has an electric field coupling ability, but this ability is strongly inactivated in the cubic phase. This inactivity to the AC fields was also found in the cubic phase of ANBC16. This behaviour could be explained by the small structural unit size of the cubic phase.     

Copper-catalyzed complete regio- and stereoselective cyclization of 1-aryl-3-sulfanyl-4-oxahepta-1,6-diynes triggered by alkynylation

Copper(I)-catalyzed alkynylation-cyclization of 4-oxahepta-1,6-diynes 1 with a wide variety of terminal alkynes proceeded to give (3E,4Z)-3-(phenylsulfanylmethylene)-4-(2-propynylidene)tetrahydrofuran-2-yl]benzenes 2aa-he in high yields with complete regio- and stereoselectivity.     

Improvement in superconductivity of TlBa2CaCu2Oy system by introduction of oxygen loss

The T_c and oxygen content of TlBa₂CaCu₂O_y have been investigated by quenching experiments, in which the heat-treated samples were dropped into liquid nitrogen. The oxygen loss, v, of TlBa₂CaCu₂O_{yo − v} was determined by thermogravimetry in a nitrogen atmosphere using an oxygen-annealed specimen of TlBa₂CaCu₂O_yo and also by measurements of the weight differences before and after quenching. T_c increased from 80 K of the oxygen-annealed specimen up to about 110 K with increasing oxygen loss up to v = 0.035 by annealing at 500°C in a nitrogen atmosphere. Judging from the high T_c above 110 K achieved by a small oxygen loss about v = 0.035, the as-sintered oxygen-annealed TlBa₂CaCu₂O_yo specimen was in the over-doping state and probably has an oxygen vacancy of 7 − y_o0.     

Fatigue gage utilizing slip-initiation phenomenon in electroplated copper foil

Fundamental experiments are carried out to examine the parameter that dominates the slip-band initiation in electroplated copper foil under the condition where the mean stress as well as the stress amplitude varies. In the case of constant-amplitude stressing, the relation between the critical stress for the slip-band initiation σ _p and the number of cyclesN is well represented by σ _p ^α N=C. In other words, the slip bands appear when the total hysteresis energy applied to the copper foil attains a critical value. In the case of variable stresses, the range-pair mainly dominates the occurrence of the slip bands, and Miner's linear cumulative damage rule holds for the accumulation of the fatigue damage for the slip-band initiation. Accordingly, the parameter (Σσ _i ^α n _i/Σn _i)^1/α is equivalent to the critical stress σ _p under constant amplitude stressing, where σ _i andn _i are the stress amplitude and the number of cycles counted by the range-pair method, respectively, and α is the exponent of the σ _p -N relation. Based on these results, the applicability of the copper foil to the fatigue gage that accumulates and indicates a load experience is discussed.
