Global energy spectra of bands and density of states in a class of two-tile systems

Electronic properties of a general class of one-dimensional two-tile systems are calculated exactly. The systems containing periodic crystals, generalized Fibonacci quasicrystals, generalized Thue-Morse aperiodic lattices and even other two-tile aperiodic lattices, can be divided into two different families which are constructed by the inflation rules: {A, B}{A ^m11 B ^m12,A ^m21 B ^m22} and {A, B}{A ⁿ¹¹ B ⁿ¹²,B ⁿ²¹ A ⁿ²²}, respectively. As typical examples, global spectra of bands and density of states in some two-tile aperiodic systems are numerically calculated. Some interesting properties are obtained.     

Origin and manifestation of the anharmonic potential felt by an ion-cloud in an actual Paul trap

The anharmonic potential felt by a single-species ions confined in a rf quadrupole trap which results from a non-ideal trap configuration and the charge distribution of the ion cloud is studied. The rf resonance-absorption spectra are explained by a Duffing oscillator and a representation of the line-shape parameter is derived. For > 0.77, the electric signals will exhibit hysteresis. The relation with the anharmonic potential is discussed.     

High-efficiency continuous-wave diode-pumped Tm:Ho:LuAG laser at 2.1 μm

Continuous Wave (CW) laser action has been observed from a Ho:Tm:LuAG rod at 2.1 m pumped by a diode laser at 785 nm in the temperature range of 77–200 K. The maximum power observed was 1.38 W at an incident power of 4 W at a crystal temperature of 77 K. The optical-to-optical conversion efficiency was observed to be 35.6% at a threshold power of 0.2 W with a 95% output coupling mirror.     

Chaotic electronic scattering with He(+)

We investigate classical electronic collisions with a He(+) ion. Scattering functions, such as the scattering angle, collisional time, or energy of the outgoing electron, all exhibit an interesting hierarchial self-similar structure, which can be interpreted in terms of the indefinite number of electronic returns to the vicinity of the nucleus, encounters between electrons, and Keplerian excursions of electrons during the collisional processes. Based on this mechanism a binary coding is introduced to organize the dynamics of this three-body system and to provide an understanding of the self-similarity among generations of scale magnification, which yields escape rates that vary with the sectional cut into the parameter space. The self-similarity displayed within a single generation, on the other hand, can be simply tied to the periods of the two independent electronic excursions. The physical interpretation and the symbolic dynamics introduced here are generally useful for three-body collisional systems, including atomic, molecular, or stellar collisions.     

Dianion approach to chiral cyclopropene carboxylic acids

[reaction: see text] In this Letter, we describe a general method for preparing the dianions of cyclopropene carboxylic acids, and we show that their subsequent reactions with electrophiles provide a general means for selectively introducing diverse types of functional groups. This provides a general method for the synthesis of chiral 1,2-disubstituted cyclopropenes, and opens new avenues for the enantioselective preparation of cyclopropenes.

Photoacoustic Spectrometry Investigation and Determination of Rare Earth Ions Ho3+ and Nd3+ in a Solution

A home-made high sensitive photoacoustic transducer was used to determine the photoacoustic signal in a solution. The photoacoustic spectra of Ho in different solvents were measured and comparedwith its absorption spectrum. The affection factors of photoacousticsensitivity are discussed. The trivalent rare earth ions Ho3+ and Nd3+in an aqueous acetonitrile solution were determined. The detection limit is 5×10-8 mol/L for Ho3+ and 1.0 ×10-7 mol/L for Nd3+, and corresponds to the absorbance of 1.5×10 and 6.3×10-7.respectively.
