Determination of Br,Rb, Cs,Sc and Na in various plant leaves located in an urban park by neutron activation analysis

In order to determine the effect of airborne emission of trace elements, e.g. Br, Rb Cs, Sc and Na on roadside ecosystem, concentrations were determined in different species of plants from an urban park at Lahore. For monitoring purpose attention was paid to the leaves ofSapindus mukorossis, Alstonia scholaris andDiospyros embryopteris. Different varieties of tissues were found to have different concentration of trace elements when compared among themselves. The concentration of trace element deposition was compared with the values reported in literature. Significant pollution was observed.     

Isomeric ruthenium terpyridine complexes [Ru(trpy)(L)Cl]n+ containing the unsymmetrically bidentate acceptor L=3-amino-6-(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine. Synthesis, structures, electrochemistry, spectroscopy and DFT calculations

The isomeric title complexes were obtained in almost equimolar ratio from the reaction of Ru(trpy)Cl3 and L. Crystal structure analyses of the perchlorate hemihydrates, electrochemical and spectroscopic (NMR, UV/VIS, EPR) studies, supported by DFT calculations, reveal distinct differences between the isomeric redox series [1]n+(tetrazine-Nt trans to Cl) and [2]n+(pyrazolyl-Np trans to Cl; n= 0, 1, 2). The latter system with the pi acceptors trpy and tetrazine in the equatorial plane and the pyrazolyl and chloride donors in the axial positions exhibits facilitated oxidation, lower energy MLCT transitions, more balanced chelate coordination, and a higher g anisotropy in the oxidised (RuIII) state. According to partially resolved EPR spectra of one-electron reduced neutral compounds and they have the unpaired electron predominantly in the tetrazine ring of L.     

Preformulation compatibility studies of etamsylate and fluconazole drugs with lactose by DSC

Chemical compatibility of two drugs, namely, etamsylate and fluconazole was studied with lactose as excipient, employing differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The DSC patterns recorded for the mixtures of both the drugs with the common excipient (lactose) indicated that fluconazole as well as etamsylate were incompatible with lactose at high temperatures. X-ray diffraction patterns recorded for pure drugs and lactose and the mixtures of individual drugs with lactose prepared at room temperature by intimate grinding of the components revealed incompatibility of both the drugs with lactose also at room temperature. Beta-N-cyanoethyl acyl hydrazide derivatives: a new class of beta-glucuronidase inhibitors

Eight new beta-N-substituted acyl hydrazides along with their corresponding acyl derivatives were synthesized and screened for in vitro beta-glucuronidase inhibition and found to be active against the enzyme. All of these compounds were found to be noncompetitive inhibitors except for N'-(2-cyanoethyl)-4-hydroxy benzohydrazide (10), which was found to be an uncompetitive inhibitor. Structure-activity relationship studies indicated that the benzyloxy group present in compounds 12 and 13 is responsible for the beta-glucuronidase inhibition activity.     

Enhancement of the Catalytic Activity of a Macrocyclic Cobalt(II) Complex for the Electroreduction of O(2) by Adsorption on Graphite

In solution, the [(tim)Co](2+) complex (tim = 2,3,9,10-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-1,3,8,10-tetraene) reacts only slowly with O(2), but upon adsorption on graphite electrodes, it becomes an active catalyst for the reduction of O(2) to H(2)O(2). The electroreduction of O(2) proceeds in a single voltammetric step at close to the diffusion-controlled rate at a relatively positive potential (0.25 V vs SCE). The remarkable enhancement in catalytic activity is attributed to a higher affinity for O(2) of the adsorbed complex as a result of its interactions with functional groups on the surface of roughened or oxidized graphite. A possible mechanism for the catalytic reduction of O(2) is proposed. It differs from the one employed by the analogous [(hmc)Co](2+) complex (hmc = C-meso-5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) which operates at less positive potentials and exhibits two separated voltammetric steps in the reduction of O(2), via [(hmc)CoOOH](2+), to H(2)O(2).     

Effect of various irradiation doses on some nutrients of Pakistani date

Summary Date samples were irradiated with different doses using a gamma-irradiator. Levels of moisture, protein, fibre and fats were determined on monthly basis for 5 months. Generally, the moisture contents of control date samples packed in white polythene decreased from 14.1±1.1 to 9.7±0.8% over a 5-month period while the irradiated samples were in the range of 10.4-11.2%, however, no proper pattern of change was observed. After 5-month storage, the protein level of irradiated samples was reduced to 1.00-1.30%, while the percent fibre levels were found to be in the range of 2.40-2.48. Similarly, the fat level decreases from 1.06±0.12 to 0.68±0.06 for control date sample while after 5-month the decrease in fat content was 0.45±0.04%, 0.44±0.04%, 0.44±0.05%, 0.42±0.05% and 0.40±0.04% for samples irradiated with 20, 50, 100, 200 and 300 krads, respectively.     

9,9-diphenyl-1,9,10,10a-tetrahydro-2H-phenaleno[1,9-bc]pyrans

Reaction between some naphtho[2,1-b]pyrans and 1,1-diphenylethene affords 9,9-diphenyl-1,9,10,10a-tetrahydro-2H-phenaleno[1,9-bc]pyrans.     

Raman scattering study of the low temperature phase transitions in ammonium nitrate

The phase changes in polycrystalline ammonium nitrate and its fully deuterated analogue have been studied by Raman scattering. The phase V and IV transition was found to be associated with the softening and intensity decrease of a NO₃^? librational mode. The Raman line-width data suggest that the VII to V phase transition involves a change in the degree of orientational order of the ions without incurring a change in lattice structure.     

Synthesis of 9‐Halogenated 9‐Deazaguanine N7‐(2′‐Deoxyribonucleosides)

The syntheses of N⁷‐glycosylated 9‐deazaguanine 1a as well as of its 9‐bromo and 9‐iodo derivatives 1b , c are described. The regioselective 9‐halogenation with N‐bromosuccinimide (NBS) and N‐iodosuccinimide (NIS) was accomplished at the protected nucleobase 4a (2‐{[(dimethylamino)methylidene]amino}‐3,5‐dihydro‐3‐[(pivaloyloxy)methyl]‐4H‐pyrrolo[3,2‐d]pyrimidin‐4‐one). Nucleobase‐anion glycosylation of 4a – c with 2‐deoxy‐3,5‐di‐O‐(p‐toluoyl)‐α‐D ‐erythro‐pentofuranosyl chloride ( 5 ) furnished the fully protected intermediates 6a – c (Scheme 2). They were deprotected with 0.01M NaOMe yielding the sugar‐deprotected derivatives 8a – c (Scheme 3). At higher concentrations (0.1M NaOMe), also the pivaloyloxymethyl group was removed to give 7a – c , while conc. aq. NH₃ solution furnished the nucleosides 1a – c . In D₂O, the sugar conformation was always biased towards S (67–61%).
