We study analytically the relaxation dynamics of charged test fields left outside a newly born charged black hole. In particular, we obtain a simple analytic expression for the fundamental quasinormal resonances of near-extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes. The formula is expressed in terms of the black-hole physical parameters: , where TBH and Φ are the temperature and electric potential of the black hole, and q is the charge of the field.  相似文献

We present a first-principles method for the evaluation of the transmittance probability and the coherent conductance through elongated systems composed of a repeating molecular unit and terminated at both ends. Our method is based on a divide and conquer approach in which the Hamiltonian of the elongated system can be represented by a block tridiagonal matrix, and therefore can be readily inverted. This allows us to evaluate the transmittance and the conductance using first-principles electronic structure methods without explicitly performing calculations involving the entire system. A proof of concept model based on a trans-polyacetylene chain bridging two aluminum leads indicates that our divide and conquer approach is able to capture all the features appearing in the transmittance probability curves obtained by a full scale calculation.  相似文献

Time's apparent passage has long been debated by philosophers, with no decisive argument for or against its objective existence. In this paper we show that introducing the issue of determinism gives the debate a new, empirical twist. We prove that any theory that states that the basic laws of physics are time-symmetric must be strictly deterministic. It is only determinism that enables time reversal, whether theoretical or experimental, of any entropy-increasing process. A contradiction therefore arises between Hawking's [1] argument that physical law is time-symmetric and his controversial claim [2] that black-hole evaporation introduces a fundamental unpredictability into the physical world. The latter claim forcibly entails an intrinsic time-arrow independent of boundary conditions. A simulation of a simple system under time reversal shows how an intrinsic time arrow re-emerges, destroying the time reversal, when even the slightest failure of determinism occurs. This proof is then extended to the classical behavior of black holes. We conclude with pointing out the affinity between time's arrow and its apparent passage.  相似文献

We present the results of an experimental study of superconducting, disordered, thin films of amorphous indium oxide. These films can be driven from the superconducting phase to a reentrant insulating state by the application of a perpendicular magnetic field (B). We find that the high-B insulator exhibits activated transport with a characteristic temperature, TI. TI has a maximum value (TpI) that is close to the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) at B=0, suggesting a possible relation between the conduction mechanisms in the superconducting and insulating phases. Tp(I) and Tc display opposite dependences on the disorder strength.  相似文献

We demonstrate the physical principles for the construction of a nanometer-sized magnetoresistance device based on the Aharonov-Bohm effect [Phys. Rev. 115, 485 (1959)]. The proposed device is made of a short single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) placed on a substrate and coupled to a tip/contacts. We consider conductance due to the motion of electrons along the circumference of the tube (as opposed to the motion parallel to its axis). We find that the circumference conductance is sensitive to magnetic fields threading the SWCNT due to the Aharonov-Bohm effect, and show that by retracting the tip/contacts, so that the coupling to the SWCNT is reduced, very high sensitivity to the threading magnetic field develops. This is due to the formation of a narrow resonance through which the tunneling current flows. Using a bias potential the resonance can be shifted to low magnetic fields, allowing the control of conductance with magnetic fields of the order of 1 T.  相似文献

We present the results from an experimental study of the magnetotransport of superconducting wires of amorphous indium-oxide having widths in the range 40-120 nm. We find that, below the superconducting transition temperature, the wires exhibit clear, reproducible, oscillations in their resistance as a function of magnetic field. The oscillations are reminiscent of those that underlie the operation of a superconducting quantum interference device.  相似文献

We develop a coarse-grained lattice gas model to describe drying-mediated self-assembly of nanoparticles in three dimensions. Our model is an extension of the model developed by Rabani et al. [Nature 2003, 426, 271] in two dimensions. We show that when liquid evaporation occurs layer by layer and solvation forces are strong, the resulting morphologies agree well with the predictions of the 2D model. We discuss scenarios in which the full 3D treatment is necessary and predict the formation of nanostalagmites.  相似文献
